While the cake turned out nicely I have some tips for anyone attempting to make a cake of this size. First, you will need to use a foamcore base of at least a half inch thickness. A cardboard base isn’t sufficient support for a large tiered cake. Also, four bubble tea straws aren’t enough to hold up all that cake. Cakes are very heavy and to hold up an 8” cake you will need to use 7 straws and in general just use one straw less than the inches of the tier. In the end you will need to sharpen a dowel and drive it through all Cake tiers and the foamcore board. This will ensure that your cake does not slide around in transit. You can also use melted chocolate to adhere the first cake layer to each board before icing which is what I do.

Hi Sharita, I did use a 1/2 inch thick base for this cake! And the number of straws did hold the weight of this cake for 36 hours, with 11 of those hours at room temp. I do agree though that sharpening the central wooden dowel would make it. way easier to slide the tiers on, and I hope one day when i have better tools I can do that

@@crishnaholmes7730 I really like it, for the most part. Except I've started to develop an allergic reaction to something I use, possibly acrylic. I have what they call contact dermatitis and it happens after repeated exposure to certain chemicals. It can happen with anything you touch often enough. I've even heard of it happening with shampoo! So, now I don't know what to do because it doesn't seem to be going away, even with steroid cream. I don't want to quit though...

The simplicity and to the point approach in this video is amazing.

I thought you were Rachel Ballinger. But I'm glad I stumbled upon your video. You're really talented!

use a scale when loading cake pans, it works beautifully

If you’re scared to make your own cake, start smaller. I made my own 3 tier small cake last summer, and ordered a sheet cake from a bakery to offset the servings. It was really special to make my own little cake for my woodland wedding.

Barbara Fischer if using fresh flowers you MUST make certain the flowers are food safe and no pesticides were used on the flowers. Make sure the florist knows the flowers are going on a cake.

This video showed a lot of waste. Read the comments. Someone mentioned a thing you put on top sp it won't dome. Another mentioned a special leveler to cut the tops. As she spun it at the end it was not ballanced. And she did not explain how she used the straws.

I've never made a wedding cake before. I'm still learning my way around baking, but I think I'm pretty good at it. However, I've never been as intimidated as I am now that I have to make a wedding cake for my aunt's 1st wedding ceremony (long story) but luckily it's only gonna be for about 30-40 people....whew! I'm so nervous. But I always watch your videos to calm myself down and for tips and tricks. Thanks so much for this!

I've always wondered, when you cut the cake to serve, do you discard the slices that had the straws in them? How do you make sure no one gets a slice with a straw in it? And that you don't slice right down on a straw? Dang, is my anxiety having too much fun rn

The straws are pulled out before slicing (as each cake that has been removed from the stack.)

Beautiful!!! You did an amazing job on the wedding cake!!! The layers and measuring everything out for the height. The box from Home depot was an excellent idea. Cake boxes can be very expensive, especially for larger cakes.

what are you doing

Some people use ‘bake even’ cake strips that are moistened and put around the outside of the cake tin. Apparently it helps to keep the top of the cakes flat and keeps them moist. I’ve just ordered some to see if it works. They’re not expensive. I like the cake air flow things as well. I have a small kitchen and the amount of stuff like this that I have is too much but I love baking.

To help keep layers flat, Wilton makes a silver fabric type thing that you wet and wrap around cakes. That way the don't cook at the edges faster than the center. I am not a professional but have used them for two layer cakes with success. Great tutorial, very concise.

I really thought I could make my own wedding cake.. and then I saw this video! So much time and effort. It's definitely an art! It would require a lot of practice, and by that time, I wouldn't be able to fit into my wedding dress ;). I wanted to make it with "rose bed" cake separators in between each tier!

It was about 3 miles away, and the central dowel was 1/2 an inch thick :)
