How To Make a Water Filter In The Wild

Ойын-сауық

Disclaimer. This water filter will not make the water SAFE. It will only render it clear and make it more palatable. you must boil it afterwards or use another form of proper disinfection. SODIS or Solar Disinfection would work.
cavemancodyw...
In this video I go through the processes of constructing a primitive filter utilizing natural recourses such as charcoal from a fire, moss, and sand. I use a soda bottle as the filter container to show you the individual layers and to see the water seep through the layers.

    ForbiddTV In fact very true, I have had issues with people tuning me out in the past when I start out with a safety speech or tip. My idea was to try and draw them in and them be so intrigued to the video that when I get to the safety aspect, they will be listening like they should. I have this issue when I teach in person as well as over internet.

    Sadly it’s incredibly common to find plastic bottles all over nature. Especially around sea or lake shores, where they wash up on even the most remote wilderness. I wouldn’t plan my trip around finding random plastic bottles and aluminium cans, but yeah it’s surprisingly likely once you begin to look for all the human littering.

    You need the moss last and the activated carbon first. Cut a hole in the bottle cap, put a piece of cotton clothe across the top and replace the cap, then add charcoal, sand and moss last. Moss might have contaminants or even insects!

    It is helpful if you compress the carbon or even powder it first. The Carbon is not a filter, it replaces impure ions from the water and depends on surface area. Smaller the granules, the greater the surface area of the carbon.

    Ah no, moss naturally filters water. You’re not supposed to dig down to the bottom, but taking the top layer is good. Spagnum Moss (i think for spelling) has little bits of iodine in it that kills bacteria. Other moss has been known to remove lead. Other moss arsenic (they discovered in 2018). They teach this in the military, when you can’t have a fire etc., and the choice is between wringing out moss or drinking from a stream, the moss is actually safer from its natural cleansing properties.

Look to me like it worked really well. That water that came out of the filter would be way more pleasant to drink than the water you started with for sure! Awesome video.

    Absolutely. I always use clear bottles for showing people. once someone understands and sees how something works they can construct it a lot easier knowing the importance of each element. • @CavemanCody

    @CavemanCody

    I tried a huge amount of designs. half and half, one layer only, even supped up giant filters. and this design in this video is what I found to be the most efficient. You could however put the water in a container and let it sit and all the sediment will fall to the bottom. Not sure if that would be faster or not though. You can also dig a sip well beside your water source. when it comes in it will be cloudy but most likely safe. and if you let it just sit there it will clear up. As far as I know of there are no real faster ways. in what I have tested you have to sacrifice quality for speed.

    No.. this works like the filters in the Brita brand where it goes through layers of charcoal and sifting materials to filter out bacterias by creating a hostile environment as I don't think they can live in Charcoal, and then filtering out solids. You can do this naturally too by digging a well near an underground water source where the carbon in the mud will naturally filter out bacteria and parasites. the video is just showing you a convenient way should you get stranded in the wilderness with a couple water bottles.

  • @bozo5632

    +SomeUrbanNinja Yes.. It won't be safe to drink. An few cm of rough charcoal will not sanitize the water. Plus the filter materials themselves will contain microorganisms - you could ADD pathogens to water with this filter. Definitely boil / treat it after filtering.

    Chaps0n Hey man, mathematically speaking there is about enough resoures for about 8-10 million(1.000.000) people to live on earth as hunter-gatherers. So farming is absolutelly necessary for 8Billion people to be able to survive. Which causes trade and all the other stuff that comes with it. A better solution to the monetary system can may be found but everyone turning to hunter-gathering is simply impossible.

  • @Chaps0n

    @Chaps0n

    9 жыл бұрын

    Ferhat Büke that's why I said; 'if I can't wake up the sheeple'. the world needs to wake up and we need to unite consciously in order to come up with a better system. We don't need any money or tool to pay for things. Money doesn't do anything. We, the people, do all the work. All we need is each other. And we can have everything we want without having to trade or barter. All you need to do is do your work for the community you're in. Hell, you don't even have to work 40h/week, that's ridiculous! A better solution is a conscious solution, starting within ourselves by becoming aware that we're being enslaved and starting to realize that we don't have to pay bills and pay taxes. Then we need to unite and talk about the solution. What has already been done. Ever heard of the Ubuntu movement from South Africa? If not, feel free to check it out. You might find it interesting!

    Chaps0n Well bro that system is called Socialism and I'm all up for it =). Of course with all the anti propaganda againts the word, it might be impossible for most people to agree that it's a good system but other alternatives such as a Resource based economy that is described in documentary series Zeitgeist could be implemented. I already know about Ubuntu and again the problem with it is that people won't agree on it because of it's similarity with socialism.

    So where do you get the 2 liter plastic bottle 'in the wild'? And how about carrying some paper coffee maker filters to use instead of the moss? Wouldn't that be better? And don't you still have to boil it? You would need a metal container for that. Yeah, so I saw the printed scroll at the end about still having to boil it. So Ok there.

    I dont know where you have hiked or camped but ive been everywhere from the coast to national parks in the mountains to private land. Finding human garbage is not hard. Bottles being among the easiest.

    You probably used charcoal powder or dust? You need small grains, about like large sand. Bigger size is okay too but then you need a lot more.

    Can you reuse the all the ingredients you used the first time or do you have to get all new supplies everytime?

    This. To me, it'd be fine to use the same bottle and ingredients. Since it's all there, and "washed" from the first few uses. But I know nothing about water filtering, and would love to know the answer to this as well.

    Good stuff Cody, Remember that commercial where the Indian chief cried because the American rivers were so polluted? So I know along any creek or forest journey you will find tons of plastic bottles.
