    Thank you for posting this! Just happened to see it in my recommended feed and had no idea this was a thing. Me and my mother are going in the end of September and would have been really upset had we not been able to do the majority of the park. Had that happen at Zion already this year!

    For sure! Seems to be a big push for limiting capacity at many parks these days

    Thanks for putting up this info. I made hotel reservations in Loveland for 3rd week of June and wasn’t aware of all this until today. Suppose we could try some other destinations as well. I saw your Lake Isabell hike that was very nice.

    I’m wanting to know if I can make a timed entry reservation starting May1st if I don’t have a park pass until I purchase one on May 21-22 ? There is not enough time to buy a park pass online because we will be arriving in Colorado May 21st. Thank you!

    You may not need a timed entry permit, I believe it isn’t in effect until May 28 which would be after your visit on the 21&22.

    Do the yearly national parks passes still work??? So you have to have a pre made reservation to enter the park? or just for specific areas? i just wanted to arrive and have a drive around and take a few pictures. Thanks! I have no idea which specific areas or hikes I would want to reserve. I just looked and the bear lake entry is booked a month out, so I guess if Im passing through the area I cant see that. What a shame! Also on the dates after that, all the morning slots are taken so the earliest you can arrive is 1pm which doesn't leave much time for doing any hikes. Ah this is really a shame. It looks like they release more passes on the day at 5am so I will just have to show up and see if I can snag one. Wish me luck! Wow the Whole of July is already booked out!

    The reservation system is tough for sure, and makes spontaneity nearly impossible. But without it, the parks get overrun, there’s people everywhere, and overflowing parking lots. But there’s lots to RMNP outside of the bear lake corridor that is also beautiful. Try wild basin or gem lake. If Trail Ridge Road is open, start it before the reservation times start or after reservation times end. Safe travels!

    Good afternoon. My wife and I are coming out in June. Camping near Estes park for 4 days while exploring the park. Would it be safe to assume that the Bear Creek pass would be the one we would get the most out of? We will eventually be driving through the park to Grand Lake and beyond. How would that work if we wanted to explore the west end on our way through? Thanks for your time :)

    I think you’ll probably want the bear lake permit for at least one day, and maybe just the “rest of the park, excluding bear lake” for the other day(s)

    Do you know whether or not you need to get a timed reservation pass to hike If you camp at either the Moraine Park or Glacier Basin Campgrounds?

    That’s a great question. I’m not sure, but here’s what the NPS website says: “Reservations will be based on approximately 75 percent to 85 percent of the park’s total parking capacity. Last year’s system was based on approximately 60 percent of the park’s total parking capacity. This system spreads use throughout the park to better utilize all parking/trailhead areas.” That makes me think it’s about keeping trailhead parking lots under a certain capacity, so if you’re leaving the campground to drive to a trailhead, maybe yes? But again, just how I’m interpreting it, seems like if you’re camping there you should also already be considered as part of the park’s capacity, so I’m not sure. Try giving them a call: (970) 586-1206

    Did you find out if you can arrive before 5am if you will be able to get in without the reservation? I tried calling the park to confirm I keep getting a busy line.

  • @AdventuresofMulehawk

    Yep I think if you arrive before 5am there won’t be anyone in the ranger stations so not only do you not need a reservation, you won’t need to pay, either.

    I know it’s frustrating and makes a trip require much more planning than usual. But the truth is even before covid, the park was so crowded every summer it made finding parking nearly impossible, and finding solitude in nature just as challenging. So limiting the crowds actually makes for a better experience. Try visiting in the evening past the time of required reservations, it actually stays light quite late in the summer and you see more wildlife at dusk anyway.

    @@AdventuresofMulehawk I get your point I just hate having to make a reservation for it when on a busy schedule is in the parks but unfortunately people go crazy especially during the summer at the national parks. Hopefully I will be able to visit some more parks probably during the fall time though

  • @AdventuresofMulehawk

    @AdventuresofMulehawk

    You have to enter the park (on foot, in a vehicle, or on a bike) then park your vehicle or bike, and then board the shuttle at a shuttle bus stop. So you’ll have to have a timed entry reservation when you enter the park (before ever getting to a shuttle bus stop)
