How to Make a Thin Parting Tool - And Multiangle Economy Bowl

Continuing with the Turning on The Cheap theme (playlist: • Turn Talk 12 - Turning... . I decided to make my own ultra thin parting tool. I ordered and used a high speed steel reciprocating saw blade. Once it was made I made another economy bowl. This one with multiple angles, not just 45 degrees. In a follow up video I will explain this process in more detail. All in all, I'm happy with the result. Finished with Minwax Antique Oil. Enjoy. If you wish to buy the same blade I used, it is no longer available. Figures, huh?!? However, I found this 2 pack for the same price I paid for my single blade: amzn.to/3vxQ7PM A question has been asked: "Can you use a bi-metal blade instead of high speed steel?" The answer is, "It depends on what you use to sharpen. If you use CBN wheels, I would stay away from bimetal blades even though they might be okay. Bi-metal blades are made from spring steel with an edge of high speed steel that the teeth are cut into. While most spring steel should be above the .55 % carbon minimum for use with a CBN wheel, some may be as low as .5 % putting them just outside the safe range." Bottom line: User discretion, but don't say I didn't warn you if it clogs up your CBN wheels. Another question was: "Where did you get the chromed cap for the handle?" This is a funny one. Not the question, but the answer. It held the faucet arm of an old Reverse Osmosis spigot in place. When I replaced the system I saved anything (as I often do) that looked like it might be useful some day. Billy

Looks great Billy! I started watching early on but had to check on something. Was going to be just a quick peek. Some critters got into the built in generator and chewed 7 wires. Found that while we were at a family reunion and it would not start. And it was blasting hot! That got me side tracked but I just sat down and finished watching even though it was not longer live. Great looking parting tool and the is amazing looking. Later, Gary

No worries, Gary. Sometimes life gets in the way. Those pesky critters love chewing wires! I think I have a few chewed up in the house now. One of my circuits is dead! Thank you, my friend! I owe the idea to you. Billy

Just a matter of finding out which of the 7 wires I really need. It has been a farm field behind us for the 50 years we have been here. Then they decided they needed to build 9 new monster houses and all that digging has chased the critters down here. Mice, rats and rabbits. We all get ideas from each other. Happy this has worked for you. Take care, Gary

very nice presentation Billy. I made a thin kerf parting tool / cutoff tool from a (bimetal) DeWalt Fire & Rescue DW4865 Demolition Blade .. I am on my second blade, and that is a LOT of cutting to get through a blade. The Economy Bowl looks fun .. I will have to fiddle with some angles and "give it a go!" ..

The parting tool did just whatnot was supposed to do. The bowl came out pretty nice. Seems like Gary said something to the effect that at the very end, the parting cuts needed to be very light so that the wood didn’t frey out like that. You made the comment that you could hear when it got close. Looks like #3 will be perfect. Great work Billy.

You said you had to cut off the teeth. Obviously. I wish you had described and showed us what else you did to the blade. At this point I don't know what makes it such a good parting tool.

  • @TheMessyStudio

Dennis, aside from grinding the teeth and all the set (bends in the blade for the tooth angle), all I did was grind the cutting angles. I basically used the same angles as my Carter & Sons thin parting tool. While this worked well enough, I have since made another. But this time I used 2mm x 8mm HSS bar. This one works much better because it has less side to side flex.
