    In my T shirt quilt, I had many shirts where the picture was on the back and then there was a small logo or name above a front pocket. I cut out the logo or name and made a strip of them which was used as a border or sashing to make smaller blocks fit with larger blocks.

    I really enjoyed your tips and ideas. I recently guided a first time quilter make a t-shirt for her teenage daughter, never making one myself. We sashed blocks, used a Minky backing and had a local quilt shop long arm it. It turned out amazing. We worked together with text messages and photos plus a u-tube video or two. She has talked about making a second t-shirt quilt at some point. Now we are making table runners with star blocks together. She’s hooked! It’s so rewarding mentoring.

    Great information & nice to meet you, Gina Tell. I made a Sorority T-shirt quilt for a teacher, about 15 years ago, as her only daughter was being graduated from college in the spring. I was asked, agreed on a price & timeliness. So glad she gave me 5 months to work on it. It turned out beautifully but it was difficult for me to machine quilt as I didn't want to stitch over any of the vinyl pictures/words. I ended up stitching echo stitches around smaller motifs & square or rectangle straight stitching on the t-shirt block. I made sashing from the bottom of the cut off t-shirt fabric blocks that already had interfacing ironed on & it worked out well. I have made a few others, too. I included photo transfer blocks, per the recipient's wishes. I used the front & back necline, still together on a few blocks, as it added dimension. I cut my t-shirts up, still as if on a person, & cut up the sides & cut off the sleeves. Occasionally there was a motif on a sleeve that went into a combined block (of smaller labels or motifs). Maybe when you return, you can suggest possible quilting tips for the t-shirt quilts. Great tips, thanks, Gina!!!

    This is one of the easiest tutorials I have seen for a t-shirt quilt. My question is this: Do you put a backing fabric before quilting, or does the stabilizer become the backing?? I'm almost embarrassed to ask because I have made garments and even wedding gowns, but I have never made a quilt. Thanks for your advice. I look forward to watching more of your tutorials. 🩷

  • @mariekairys3214

    I'm not sure if someone answered you already or not - yes you need backing fabric for the quilt. The stabilizer becomes part of the tee shirt material to make it less stretchy and easier to sew.

  • @GinaTellThreadGraffiti

    Yes, the quilt behind me on the wall has a couple football jersey shirts, same process, however you “might” want a fusible that is a little heavier than the 906F I used. Also be careful pressing them, use the parchment paper because you don’t want the Jersey numbers to melt on your iron.

    A friend wants me to make them a t-shirt quilt, but with a fleece backing instead of using batting & backing which would make it more of a blanket. I don’t think the quality would be as good with a fleece backing but I have not seen one. Your thoughts?

  • @GinaTellThreadGraffiti

    @GinaTellThreadGraffiti

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi@@jaynebromley :) I am always surprised by how many people ask me questions about making a quilt of any kind with no batting. I think it would be ok, I just don't do it because I think the combo of the 3 layers makes the quilt more stable and last longer, and I love the feel of a quilt. I think over time the seams on the quilt top will pull apart more easily if it only has 2 layers, especially if one of them is fleece, but again just my opinion. I have not put that to the test. If I were you I would explain your reasoning to the friend, and do only what you feel comfortable with.

    Hello Julie! It depends on what type of heat press you are using. The stabilizer that you are planning to use should have information on what temperature you should use.
