How To Make A South African Koeksister - Better Than Doughnuts?!

Today we make a South African classic, the Koeksister! Koeksisters are amazing little twisted doughnut like pastries with a crisp outside and a syrupy inside. I remember these growing up in South Africa and they're awesome! Full the ingredient list and more check out: realpassionfor...

Oh gosh, this has made my mouth water, I also grew up in South Africa but I've been in Ireland for almost 20 years. Needless to say, there aren't many koeksisters around this part of the world. Your video is one of the best koeksister demos I've seen here on youtube. There is another fried syrupy dessert, also crisp on the outside, and that is Indian jalebis. I grew up near Durban so they were also a regular feature of the food landscape. You should try them, they are slightly more tart than koeksisters and have saffron and cardamom in them, they are very moreish.

I love watching you braid the dough 🤣🤣, that was cute! These are very similar to Chinese and Korean donuts. The crunch is from the syrup but very soft or chewy inside...your version is the soft ones. Very interesting to see how it's made. It's always fun to see the similarity of foods/snacks from around the world. I need a food processor, it makes things so much easier! Using oil instead of flour is a great idea, less mess and the dough is more stretchy. I love the idea of flavoring the syrup in ginger and lemon, I need to remember that next time I make syrup for soda. Amazing recipe and video, adding this to my list of things to try! 👍LIKE #16

Hiya, I'm Coreen! As for the pronunciation of my name, it was almost right except for the short rolling r. I made extra super sure Graham knew how to pronounce koeksuster, where the name comes from and had the correct recipe. There are 2 ways to make these, one being the traditional Indian way and the other being traditionally Afrikaans. This one is the latter. Perhaps some day we'll make the koelie version which is pronounced a little bit rounder, feels more puffy, oily and rolled in desiccated coconut.
