FYI I would recommend sealing/glueing the cap to the the bottom of the PVC. I just noticed the other day that water can very slowly sleep out from the bottom of one of my poles due to the cap not being sealed. Could lead to root rot!

@@ursonate Where you wrap moss around a stake and fasten it with string or mesh - so without the plastic backing seen in this video

OK, this is actually genius. Simple and effective!

just made this on the 2nd attempt. I found gutter guard a little too flimsy and the colycarb a little strong and casued strethcing of the gutter guard. I remade with plastic coated wire garden mesh with good results.

Hi! Thanks for guide. Could you please tell me what to do if the Cotton rope doesn't get wet after filling PVC pipe with water? I filled it with water to the top, but the cotton rope on top and from the outside to the bottom isn't wet... it won't get wet somehow....

It might take a few fills to properly soak everything. Have u tested the rope under a tap just to see? It might be coated in a repellent maybe?

After watching this video a couple times, I'm assembling my supplies. I'm doing this for sure. Got some babies I need to give a pole to . I am having a hard time sourcing out plastic sheeting here in Canada. Will try amazon. I thought I would use cotton for a wick, but I did see another video that they suggested poly for a longer lasting wick.

HI rob. I havent had any issue with the soil in contact with the moss. However I have had an issue in one where i put some aroid mix higher in the pole. That seems to draw water into the pot. My others are fine, they dont draw down into the soil at all. My siltipecana roots are crazy in th moss. The verrucosum aerial roots have also grown into the moss but not as deep as the siltipecana. But that makes sense given the difference between the monstera species and philodendron species

Thank you for the straight-to-the-point video! Could you help with that please: 1. Is there a way to see photos of your philodendron after it had reached the top of the pole? 2. How many days does water in the pipe last so you have to top it up?

Would u believe I never took a pic before I cut it up 😆 it had reached the top and then I cut it. I left the tip cut attached to the pole for awhile and a month or so ago pulled the top of the pole apart and replanted the tip back down the bottom with the base plant. The tip cut didn’t miss a beat

@@antonfilimonov9131 ah yes sorry. I can be a bit slack. It stays wetter than any other poles I have but you can fill every day or every week etc, it all depends just how wet you want it to stay. The back of it keeps it moist longer

Can I use any cotton rop or does have to be advertised as self wicking?

Great video! 😊 I've been wondering tho, how long does the moss stay fresh before it starts to degrede? How to change the moss or the entire moss pole without hurting the areal roots? I just need to know before i make one myself for my philodendrons. 🌱

Hi the one I use as demo in the video has been on the pole since December 2020 I think. I have moved it up a pot size in that time and moved the plant and pole together. If I was to remove the plant from the pole I imagine I would have to lay it down, cut the ties holding the gutter guard and then clip the gutter guard away from the roots. I would probably only do this if I wanted to cut my plant up and propagate it with the already established roots at each node. Unfortunately this type of pole cannot be extended so yes this is one drawback so u do have to consider if it meets your needs.

Hello 🌱 thank you for the tutorial. I wanted to share my experience, after a few months of creating a few self-watering moss walls I discovered that the thread has developed black mold, this happened to all my self-watering moss poles, i had to remove the plants and repot them on new poles. And when i took the self-watering poles apart they had an extremely foul smell. Did that happen with anyone else ?

Sorry to hear. No I haven’t had this issue. I have pulled the one we made in this video apart to cut up the plant and remade it. There wasn’t any smell

Have you had any issues of mold growing in the back where the moss sits against the polycarb backing? I'm concerned that all that trapped moisture will encourage something unsavory. How has this project held up since you posted the video?

The one i used to demo in the video with the el salvador on it was a year old with no mould issues. ive since pulled it apart to cut up my plant and reused the moss in another pole. all still in great condition.

Did the same, even with a special self watering wick for plants and it doesnt work at wall. The water stays inside the pipe, i wrapped the wick neatly around the pipe, just as you did and it does exactly nothing for me. The moss dries out and i end up spraying it with water from the outside to keep it moist. Saw some people using 3 vertical lined up wicks, perhaps for exactly that reason because the wick you wrap around just doesnt transport the water well enough.

⁠@@plantsdownunder7634I swear, I’m tempted to plan a trip to Australia 50% because I have always wanted to visit the country but also 50% because it seems Bunnings has the best plant supplies ever that we have a hard time sourcing (or sourcing from an affordable and reliable party or store) here in the US. I would hit Bunnings every day and STOCK UP as much as possible on the polycarbonate sheeting from this video and all of the various sized clear pots that The Leca Queen used in her videos from Bunnings!!!

How do you attach the cap to the pole? Do you use an adhesive? I noticed when I put the cap on the pole without an adhesive that water seeps out between the pipe and cap.

Sometimes we use plumbers adhesive. I didn’t in this one and it doesn’t leak but we do it sometimes just in case

I havent used other substrate in it but you could try with the aroid mix and see how that goes.

A heads up that your audio maybe wasn’t edited properly. I think it’s the 15mm diameter pipe.

I’ve made one of these and it doesn’t work. The moss stays dry, but the water slowly disappears go figure. No matter how much water you keep putting in the pole, it doesn’t seem to be keeping wet. 🤷🏻‍♀️

oh i am sad to hear its not working for you. the moss should be wet when you make it and you might need to top it up a few times for it to wet the moss enough

Maybe you can try those clear plastic shelf liners you can get from Ikea and Amazon, they're quite inexpensive. It's less stiff than polycarbonate sheeting, so it will also probably need some kind of stake zip tied to it for more structure.

What are the results after one year?

She grew to the top of the pole. I then cut her up and left the top chunk on the pole for awhile. I recently pulled the top part of the pole apart and pulled the cut off. She’s now replanted in the pot with the base plant ready to grow up the pole again.

Won't the wick evenutally rot?

Cotton will eventually rot. Venetian blind cord would work well and last much longer. Also available in different widths at Bunnings.
