A round ottoman is stylish and functional as extra seating in your home, on your boat, or anywhere! In this video tutorial, we’re going to show you how easy it is to make a round ottoman footstool using only foam. Most ottomans are constructed from a wooden frame with foam on top, but our ottoman is comprised of layers of foam glued together. It’s very easy to make and DIY friendly. Our round ottoman also features gorgeous channeling in the top panel, a top stitch, and a “U” shaped zipper in the bottom panel. Let’s get started!

I have a burlap coffee been bag that I want to make into an ottoman but wasn't sure if I could pull it off. I found this video while searching for foam and backing fabrics, so glad I did, learned so much. Sure wish I had a blue sailright machine, hopefully my industrial Juki will suffice. Thanks for the great video and tips. Now I know which materials I need to order to do it up right.

After checking some prices, making something like this anymore would be too costly. I hate to say that because I love Sailrite and all the great things you provide. Costs are just plain going through the roof!

I imagine an inexpensive handheld cheese grater could work to fine tune the edges. Wow, this was interesting.

Thank you so much for your tutorials. You have helped me beyond. I’m making a pouffe for my home and I’m stuffing it using old clothes, so it will be very heavy. I’m using a woven fabric for the sides but I want to use a faux leather for the base so it slides better and it is harder wearing. Have you any tips, advice or can you foresee any issues that I may have trying to join these two very different fabrics together please? I’m going to pop a length of piping in between each fabric to to finish it off nicely. I also intend to do a straight zip across the centre of the base, Will this be ok if I insert it the same way you have in the tutorial? Any advice you could give me would be appreciated as I’m working on a very tight budget so I can’t really afford to make any mistakes. Thank you once again, your tutorial and camera angles are perfection.

Glad to help. Yes, you can use two different fabrics and sew them together for the base and sides of the footstool. You can also add piping and a zipper to the bottom without issues, as we did in this video.

@@SailriteDIY Thank you very much for your reply. I’m having a nightmare trying to sew the zip onto the faux leather that I have. The thread keeps skipping stitches even though I have used a leather needle and a good quality cotton. I have also purchased basting tape. It’s now 6am and I’ve been trying to sort it since 11.30pm last night. Im not giving up, I refuse to let it beat me. I’ve got a good quality home quilting machine in the singer modern quilter, so hopefully it’s not just the fact that I haven’t got an industrial machine. I feel like my eyes are about to bleed, I’ve been staring for so long at the fabric and unpicking stitches. The rest of the pouffe has turned out beautiful, thanks to your tutorial, I’m just seriously stuck on this bit. Thanks again so much for your reply, I know it can be done, so all I have to do is sort these stitches out. Pray for me, or rather my machine! 🥴

Those raw fabric edges on the underside around the zip will become worn and untidy very quickly.

Do you have another way that the zipper can be installed on the bottom? Would love to know, if you do.
