There's a mod for lexus (idk what else it works on) steering ecu, that uses one of these in place of a resistor to make steering stiffer or looser.

Excellent helpful video; hope the scan tool suffered no long term damage. A 10k variable resistor with the 10 turn fine adjustment similar to the one shown in the first part of the video is available on eBay but does not come with the leads or black protective box shown in this video. Soldering some piggy back test leads onto the variable resistor would allow a multimeter to read the ohms. I do not know who makes the little black protective box, perhaps it is specially made but I suppose any good quality waterproof electrical box of the right dimensions would be sufficient. Warwick Test Supplies in the UK have these gadgets but they seem a bit pricey for such a little item. It is definitely a very useful tool for testing wiring to sensors which are compatible with this test method.

Hey Andrew thanks for your comment. The black one came in an electrical diagnostics kit from AESWave.com if you are in to automotive electrical work often I highly recommend that kit.

Another excellent video! 🤣when the scanner dropped Nooooo! Glad it didn’t break. You have great teaching skills. And that is a must have in one’s toolbox. How does one find the better one you showed in the beginning of the video? Also if possible it would be good to have a better view of your scanner.

Great video, can you explain a bit more on which connections you connect to. Is the two yellow to power & ground & blue wire to signal?

Yep. On a position sensor like the throttle position, accelerator pedal position, fuel level position etc. The power and ground go through the entire potential from end to end. The signal sweeps across the middle sending variable voltages depending on the sweeper's position within the potentiometer. If the sensor is a 2 wire sensor then you just need the middle and one outside. Either way you are making a change in circuit voltage for the computer to analyze.
