How to Make a Plywood Laptop Stand
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Building a LAPTOP STAND inspired by Twelve South's BookArc. Positioning a laptop vertically reduces heat buildup on the bottom and allows it to run much COOLER.

You are officially the first wood worker that I've see who uses machinist setup blocks. Great idea!!!!

Another brilliant video. Well done young man. No annoying music, just good commentary. I look forward to future videos.
You do a GREAT job explaining what you are doing throughout the project. They are easy to follow and I enjoy all of them. Looking forward to all of the 2K16 vids.
Awesome, a elegant simple design, precise and functional!
Nice project and video, glad to see yet another well-done piece from you.
I like more diverse projects. Always entertaining! And nice design. Good work!
Sweet little project there Kriss. The more I see plywood used for every day applications the more I like it. It has a modern simplistic look that is very modern, with smooth lines. Keep'em coming Kriss.

Actually, I have never used plywood at all before. It makes a lot of sense the way each ply is at right angles to the next. I WILL certainly be using it in the future!
Great video. Exactly what I was searching for.
Sounds like a great strategy. Intermixing simpler build projects like the laptop stand will still keep things interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Glad you made and make a stand...! Takin' care of yourself, is at the foundation for making videos for us. Well I liked it enough to make it and it turned out great. I used only hand tools as I don't have a mitre saw and I used thinner ply as my laptop is tiny. It looks awesome, my laptop stays cool and my desk stays tidy. Winner.
I actually made a stand using your tutorial and it came out great! I modified your idea, adding a piece of corkwood between stand and laptop to prevent it from scratches. Cheers

great video! - could you build a monitor stand, that is similar and fiting to the laptop stand?
top job
Great Idea, easily Implemented .. and to think I have a new MBP that could use a stand! :) , then I could have two larger monitors on my desk!
After realizing it's been almost 30 months since you released a video, I've decided to go through your back catalog. I hope nothing bad happened that has kept you away. Hoping it's because so many wonderful things have been happening that you don't have time to film projects.
watch out Mathias you now have real competition!
Great idea. I almost purchased that same laptop stand for my MacBook. I also have an iMac and I was wanting to design a shelf holder that connects to the back of the computer. I think from the same site you showed for the laptop stand. :-) Great vid! Thanks

@toolify
8 жыл бұрын
+MartyBlue78 - Good thing is you always have 30 days to take it back. But, personally speaking I don't think I could justify it at that price anymore. There are ways to improve the dust collection of other mitre saws to be as good (or better) than the Kapex.
very nice project

Welcome
Nice video! One thing I'm not sure to understand though is your use of the metal set-up block... why do you first put the stop block 2 inches from the blade and then use the set-up block again to position the wood to be cut? Why not directly put the stop block at one inch + the thickness of the blade?
@toolify
8 жыл бұрын
+N4w4k - It's to give the wood space to move if there's any internal tension that's released while making the cut. Such could pinch the blade, or result in kickback. While unlikely with plywood, it's a good habit to have. For the same reason, you shouldn't clamp a board on both sides of a blade at the same time.
Good too see you posting on the router forum again . I was afraid I scared you away lol . I'm the CableGuy now , was RainMan1 before

+MartyBlue78 - Thanks Rick! Oh no, not scared away at all :) Just been really short on time lately through the final year of university. I can't wait for that chapter of life to be over... the final 4 months to go!
Very nice and useful little project. I like the idea of the easier/quicker project videos release in between more complex ones. Happy 2016 and good work on your future projects! About the computer heating: Are you sure it is safe to run it closed? I thought that the heat runs off from the back edge of the macbook pro, in the screen hinge section. Also, I already got 2 "whiter" dots on my retina screen of burned pixels and after searching a bit I realized it happens when you close the macbook when it is hot. Not sure if it is true or not but now i always set it to Pause a few minutes before closing the lid to allow it to cool a bit.

+Get Hands Dirty - Thanks Cris! Based on what I've read it's safe to operate the macbook in clamshell mode. Funny you mention the bright pixels because I've had that in the past, but assumed it must have been because something physically hit the screen. I'll have to keep an eye on it for more. Side note, when I did get the bright pixel, Apple replaced my display under warranty, no questions asked - you may want to look into that for your machine.
@GetHandsDirty
8 жыл бұрын
I tried that a few months ago when I noticed the bright pixels but my computer lost its physical warranty long before when it hit the floor with only two months after purchase and since the top right corner got shattered in the black border of the glass, apple refused to correct the bright points problem because the warrantly was broken with that tiny top corner issue. whatever... thank you for the advice anyway :)

Amazing job as usual. I was wondering if you would be interested in helping me creat a tapering Jig. Not just any usual tapering jog for a table saw, but one you can clamp down onto your table and use with your circular saw and or track saw. I need to make tapered legs, but dont have a table saw, and I figured now would be the perfect opertunity to come up with some sort of jig like that. It would be awesome if we could make this as a colab video. If your interested, feel free to message me. Thanks!-Justin Levine

im at my planning stages for this, how exactly does it dispense heat better though, because from what i know heat rises, and if my exhuast fan is at the bottom of this would it be counter intuitive and just produce more heat ? just wondering

+Fauzan Armia - Keep in mind the aluminum acts like a big heat sink. Vertically, there is effectively more surface area exposed.
@fauzanarmia6249
8 жыл бұрын
Toolify since my laptop is made of majority plastic (dell laptop), would this then increase my heat ?
@toolify
8 жыл бұрын
+Fauzan Armia - Shouldn't increase the heat, but might not see as much improvement either. The MacBooks tend to get warm on the bottom side, and in my experience exposing that surface to air (as opposed to a lap, or desk) helps keep it cooler. Does the underside of your laptop get warm?
@fauzanarmia6249
8 жыл бұрын
+Toolify the heat gets exhausted through one side, so the bottom doesnt get as hot as the side does ill test out heat and inform you about the results
Ok thanks

Love the idea of this stand - might be a silly question but how do you turn your laptop on, do you have to take it out, open it up and turn it on everytime? I'm not a Mac user so this might be a simple answer to turning the laptop on from a keyboard or similar but if anyone knows how to do this on a windows laptop i'd love to hear!

Yeah, if I power it off that's what I'd have to do - but instead I just let it sleep, so tapping on the mouse/keyboard wakes it :)

+nigel davies - There's no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers. The MacBook supports this thing called "clamshell mode" so I can keep the laptop closed, and connect an external keyboard, mouse, display. That essentially lets me convert my laptop to a desktop. At the end of the day, it's a personal preference that I don't want to use the laptop screen all the time. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the question!

oh, wait -- the mitre saw? (sorry, I thought you were talking about the setup blocks). You can use any saw that you have: table saw/mitre saw/hand saw. It's just a tool that cuts wood at the end of the day. Many ways to get that done.
You wont buy the 50$ laptop stand, but you had a fancy tool to make it just a plywood laptop stand
Have you ever explained how you managed to have so many of those tools? Do you just make really good money elsewhere?
