Must Have Desk Organization: Vertical Laptop Dock

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Put on some headphones and watch the relaxing design and build process for this solid walnut vertical laptop dock. There is no speaking or music in this video, only the natural sounds of the woodworking process.
This dock holds a laptop with the lid closed while it is docked into external monitors. I designed this for a friend with a Dell laptop, but it also works well with an apple Macbook. The goal is to free up space on a desk and increase organization by holding the laptop vertically.
Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for watching! How did you like the fact that this video doesn't have a voiceover or music? I am experimenting with different video styles to try and find what viewers like most. Oh, and don't forget to like the video and subscribe if you enjoyed this!

    Thank you. I really like no voice-over and no music. It's a shame that so many in this noisy world put up with the noise and think it's normal. I hope they realise this and take some time out to just chill.

    Fantastic! I want something to hold my iPad upright for FaceTime. I don’t have tools for cutting wood, so going to try this with glued layers of heavy cardboard, and maybe glued to a wooden bottom.

    This build is perfect for holding an iPad upright! I bet cardboard will be strong enough for it. Let me know how it turns out Peace!

    I like the drawing of the blade kerf. Somehow never think of doing that, even though I've seen it done before. Gotta say, deep sixing the background music was a good idea. Although I do enjoy hearing some of the music people choose as background, it's nice to not have it all the time. Your style on this video worked for it very well. ...and I just gotta make a smaller table saw sled. That one is a good size for smaller projects.

  • @dkbuilds

    Thanks for the comments, Don! I only draw the blade kerf when I don't need the *most precise* cuts, since it's really difficult to draw two lines *exactly* the width of the blade. If I needed the two cutout blocks exactly identical, I'd have drawn one, cut it out, then used it to mark the second before cutting it out. By drawing the kerf and marking both at once you could be off by a 32nd or 64th, but for this application that didn't bother me. Make this sled, it's great! Though I wish I had a bigger one for bigger projects ;) This one limits me to boards 18" or narrower, because they have to fit within the front and back wall of the sled.

    Yea, I think I'll mosey on into the shop and start that smaller sled. When I made mine a few years ago, I went with a large one. Thinking being I'd only need to make one that way. Really though, I found out I have more use for a smaller one like yours. Well, there goes the afternoon. :-)

    Finished that small sled this morning. Gotta love the 5 cut method for adjustment. I got lucky and the first round of adjustments ended up with the next check only being out .0005" in 4 inches. I can live with that. LOL.

  • @dkbuilds

    @@DonsWoodies (.0005 / 4) * 100 --> you are accurately square to 0.01% error. That's probably good enough for NASA haha

  • @DonsWoodies

    @DonsWoodies

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@dkbuilds Ah, well actually the .0005 was after the math. The cutoff was 4" long and was out .0015. Divide that by 4 and you get .00038" over the 4" length of the piece. At least, I think I've got that right. At any rate, I can't see any discrepancy with my best square, one that has been checked to be dead on perfect. (used to be a machinist and still have access to high end equipment if I want to check stuff like that) Either way, the sled is more accurate than my woodworking skill deserves. LOL! Oh yeah, I finally found a use for the Woodriver medium shoulder plane I bought about a year ago when Woodcraft had one of their 20% off sales. After all was said and done with the sled, it was too tight on the runners. Slicing off .001 or .002" off the side of the runners with that shoulder plane was so easy. I should probably use that more often. Gotta answer the pone now - I think it's NASA calling.... hehehe.

    Cool vid. I was pleasantly surprised with the lack of the generic copy right free Muzak. I did however cringe everytime you flicked a piece of wood away while using the bandsaw- an accident waiting to happen IMHO.

    I’m getting ready to make a dock for my MacBook Pro yours came out great! On a sidenote, did you have to change any settings on the laptop so it would not shut off when you closed it?

  • @dkbuilds

    @dkbuilds

    Thanks, Tom! One quick note is that if you copy this design, I would make sure the grain on the two end pieces is running parallel to the surface of the table. Here I made a mistake by aligning it vertically, which is the weaker orientation for this. For the laptop settings yes I had to download a program to do it (in the past I've used insomniaX, and more recently Amphetamine). Note that Macbooks aren't made to be operated while closed and can overheat! But I haven't had any problems. If I notice the fans getting loud I'll generally open the laptop up, but (for me) that only happens when I'm streaming several things at once, or have a million tabs open. Hope this helps, let me know how your build turns out!
