How to Make a Pistol Case with Maker's Leather Supply
I have recently decided that I would like to finally gain the skill set needed to be able to create projects with zippers incorporated. We were in Waco, TX recently to make a video with Aaron at Maker's Leather supply on Sewing Machine Selection. While we were there, Aaron and I decided to do a collaboration video together building a project. He came up with the perfect project for our visit.
This video is our collaboration on the making of a pistol case. This particular pistol case holds two pistols and zips closed. This was a great project that allowed me to gain more knowledge about installing zippers in bag design.
The bag that we created is completely designed by Aaron and I designed the floral artwork for it. We worked together over a couple days to create the bag you will see. This was my first collaboration with another maker on video, and I was very excited with how it turned out... both the video and the project. Aaron and Janie Sue at Maker's Leather Supply were so much fun to hang out with and my time in their shop was inspiring for me and my shop.
For the patterns for the cut pieces of this bag, Aaron has created an Acrylic Template Pack that you can purchase on his website by using this link:
makersleathersupply.com/colle...
These acrylic templates are fantastic and really hold up well over time if you plan on making a lot of these. There are two different gun cases in this template set... the one we made in the video as well as a triangular single pistol case template. I highly recommend getting the templates and checking out ALL the other template packs that he has available on his website.
As with all of our project videos, we do have a companion tooling pattern pack available and you can get that here.
dgsaddlery.com/product/makers...
It has four different corner tooling sets much like you will see in the video. With the size of this bag we were not able to create a full floral pattern that you would be able to print digitally so for now we are only offering a corner set pack. The negative space can be beautifully filled in with quilting or your choice of geometric tooling. I have also included corner tooling sets for the triangular pistol case that comes with his template set.
If you have been wanting to make a unique project for yourself or that gun enthusiast friend or family member, then this video along with our resources is sure to help you with that. I was really pleased with how easily this bag went together and I think that after you watch the video you will be too. If you have been wanting to dive into a project like this, then no better time than during the holiday season. I think you will really enjoy making this project.

Great video!!! Really enjoyed thay
That was a great collaboration. I'm not good at anything till I try it. Then I get better and better at it!
I stopped in the shop that day you two were making this project. Awesome job as always. Also thank you both for helping my wife pick out a swivel knife for my anniversary (20 years) and I love it. Thanks again I’ll be attempting this this week for a cancer benefit donation.
Great explanation of the whole project thank you very much!
Two of my favorites on one video..thanks
First I've seen that. Nice tutorial Don and Arron. Blessings on you guys. Arron from one Marine to an Army friend,,Thanx for your service. Don, keep on keeping on.
Two of my favorite Texas Leather KZreadrs in one video yet again. Nice Team Work guys
I can only Imagine the success if both you guys partnered up... Arron could even learn to use his camera...great work...Doc
I have watched a few hundred leather working videos on the KZreads. And I can honestly say, you are hands down the best at carving pattern layout by hand. And the tooling as well. Sweet work
Aaron is an artist......a true craftsman, great to see you working with him...Anaco, Anz..
I'd love to see the unedited version and hear your guys' conversation.
Your tooling is absolutely awesome.
my goal is to one day be able to tool at least half as good as you. you make it look so effortlessly, and it always comes out so awesome
Absolutely one of the BEST! Love seeing you guys working together.
Awesome video and very informative. One day I'll get to working with zippers
Two of my favorite leather workers!!! I’ve stopped in at Maker’s twice now to do some shopping... looking forward to stopping in to see the saddle shop one day.
That case would be awesome for a bible as well
That's a clasy look for a bag. Looks like something that should hold up pretty good too.
Thanks for the great collaborative video. Always informative.
Very nice case top quality work.
Great project! Your tooling is incredible, and working together it’s hard to get a better combination! Great job
Such beautiful work guys!
I’m subscribed to both of y’all, so this is cool seeing you both collaborate together.
Very informative
Excellent collaboration. I have watched many of your videos Don, this is the first I have seen of Arron ( Makers Leather supply) I will make an effort to go to their site as well as view their videos. Rest assured I watch your leather tooling / carving and am amazed at the artistry in your work. This case was no exception, fantastic work. Thanks for producing and sharing.
Thanks both of yall! I defiantly see me making some knife cases for the knives I make!!! Now to find a zipper video!! LOL
Good collaboration.
Each of your videos are always such a big help for me, and to see you two collaborate was amazing ! Thank you !!!!!!
Man I tell ya those zippers have cause me more problems over the years than anything. I always have trouble with them on cases. But I am hoping what I have seen here remedies my problem. Seems to be a whole lot better process than I have been doing. I have always made the gun cases to the shape of a gun & maybe that is part of the problem. Heck if I know but I will be trying this method next time around to see. I was also using jacket zippers just cutting the end off. Maybe that's part of the problem. Thanks for the great video.
So cool to see you guys collaborating!! I follow both of you on KZread and enjoy both of your videos!!!
great video
2 great craftsmen doing their thing! Love watching yall work and hope to be at that level one day! Also I was wondering what geometric stamp did you use in between the floral tooling
That’s beautiful work. I hope I can come close to this one day.
Oh I love both of you! Awesome video! I'm coming down to help teach a class with Aaron in January, hopefully I can visit you too Don!!
This is so satisfying to watch when you are tooling. what type of swivel blade do you use? i struggle so much with mine dragging.
Great video, love the work and talent of both of you guy's! Also I see another person has the same question on the small head knife, I would like to have one that size, can you tell us where to purchase one? And thanks for all the information you share!!
Great video and like most the two of you together was awesome. I have two questions. 1. How did you like tooling on the w&c leather? 2. What is your thoughts on that edge rub?
The video had some great tricks for the zippers. I have worked with zippers for a couple of years , learned some great tips. Would like to know where you got the stamps made for your makers mark.
Have y'all ever used light weight chap or lining leather to cover the edges with the zipper stitched to it?
Don, where can I get the punch that makes the circles similar to basket weave, I love that look. I don't want to be a copy cat but I love that look. Thank you for your time. From Seaside, OR.
What stamp did you use to tool this bag with? Who made it and what's it called; what size? Thanks. Great vid!
What is the specific tool/stamp you used to make the pattern similar to basket weave on this bag? I like it and want one.

It looks like the Barry King star burst stamp.
if i may ask, what is the geo stamp you used at 5:03? love that pattern
Where can we buy the lining for the interior of the pistol case? Any alternatives?
Is that little round knife a CS osborne? Where can I find that
Do you have a video for a motorcycle tool bag?
Does anyone know how Titanium Cranium "adjusts the speed" He mentions? I can't find the right gear. Never mind I looked in settings, there is a bunch of stuff in settings I see.
Hey Don where do you get your makers mark stamp made?

I’m still here! Ha! Just been busy trying to finish a full tooled saddle I have to get done! Thanks for checking!
Yeah... like everyone else, here, I really enjoy watching each of your videos. After all, you two are the only guys that I have been watching along the way for my own educational purposes. However, I've got to say, that I really, really do not like these time lapse videos. They don't show me the exact tooling that you are using for specific effects that yo are getting while tooling flowers. I know that this isn't a "Teaching" video, but I watch all of your videos, in order to see what tools you use to get a specific effect. This does not do that. So, I have to sit here and adjust the video speed, and watch it that way. Anyway, still love you guys! Maybe I'm just in a shit mood this morning? I'm sorry.

Nothing to it eh?
