How To Make a Personalised Gift Box

I made a personalised wedding photography gift box out of walnut wood for a client who wanted to present photos and a USB stick in a personalised hand crafted box.
I will go through processes from how to machine timber, laser engraving a logo, oiling walnut and how to book match and cut to achieve a continuous grain around the box.

The music is great, I like how you lower the volume so I can hear you give instruction and then when you get back to it you turn it back up. Great editing, keep up the fantastic work, the box is beautiful!

That wood has an amazing grain, and your workmanship really shows. I have a family bible from the 1860s that needs a box like this.

Really nice, clear and concise video. Great step by step guide and a genuine pleasure to watch. I’m a jeweller who’s just starting to produce my own boxes so I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Thanks and great work! Nick.

Nice little project. Simple yet beautiful. The added touch with the personalised laser engraving really makes the box stand out. This has given me the impetus to personalise my work in a similar fashion. Thanks. Yep, music choice not the best lol. Cheers

Nice build. I've made boxes like this (and variations on this - stopped splined mitres, dowels, tiny dominos) but was never happy with the strength (end grain to end grain). Can't beat a book-matched mitred layout for appearance ... but I always worried about the integrity of the joint. Now, I do a half-lap, cut really quickly on my Minimax slider with a saw blade sharpened with a flat-topped grind, and my occasional testing-to-destruction shows it's a really tough joint, and if done well, looks nearly as good. I like to use veneered tops, (on 6mm mdf or bamboo ply) glued onto the box then rebated around the edges with an inlaid contrast strip (a sandwich of wenge and something white looks striking) which adds strength and stiffness. I sell them on commission, and through my local museum's gift shop. I rebate-in bottoms just like you, then line the bottom with leather. I need a technique I can master for making a really neat (and quick) wood hinge. Malcolm www.macpherson.co.nz

I wish I could make a living in building /creating objects for people. It could be anything just share your idea if physically possible I can create it. I work six days with 10 hour shifts if I didn't love cars I'd probably quit my job and long time ago. But still, I love using my imagination for creating things or fixing stuff or making tools or devices that make life easier also just making cool pieces of art, someday man.
