If running the two straightedges along each pair of nails strikes a circular arc, then using only 3 nails--the end points of the baseline and the top of the center high point--to construct the straightedges will also strike a circular arc. Once the straightedges are built, remove the nail on the center high point and simply run the straightedges along the end points to strike the arc.

Updated this post. I tried it to create large radii for the long sides of a kitchen table I'm building. It worked great! I did add the notch to hold the pencil in place, and I used a mechanical pencil for the fine point. For future projects, this will be my go-to for creating large radii. Thanks!!!!
Hey MuzShop, thank you for taking the time to product this great tutorial. Can't wait to use it on my current cabinet project.

Nice tip. Thank you. Some guys will half lap the ends of the strips where they mate. This way both strips will lay flat on the surface of the work piece.

New sub! I'm a little hesitant to use this on a gate in the field though. What about the sing nail method with the tape measure?
@TheMuzShop
5 жыл бұрын
I've use this for the top of a gate and turn out nice. You can do the tape nail trick too but I've sometime find that to get the right arch the nail has to be far away from the top, in some cases farther than the gate its self, which makes it hard to control... Thanks for the sub Muz
amazing isnt it. just found out about this. seems so simple . makes you wonder just how many of these little hacks are out there :)
@TheMuzShop
3 жыл бұрын
I think you are right there is probably a lot of hacks out there and i want to know them all......

Unbelievable!
so is it a segment of a perfect circle? or just an arch?

I saw an almost identical way using the two sticks but aligning them both with the baseline nails and having them intersect at the center "rise" nail. I guess it gives you a slightly smaller radius using your method. Thanks!
