I made my daughter a clean, modern canopy bed using plywood! We've got plans available so you can make one too! You can find the SYLVANIA Natural Series LED light bulbs with TruWave Technology used in this video on Amazon here: amzn.to/2ZWmirD. #sponsored

First, I designed the bbed in Fusion 360 because I needed to get approval from the stakeholders: my wife and daughter. Using 3d modeling to plan the project is extremely handy because I can easily make changes upon request. This project was a perfect example, because my wife wanted the bed to look modern and clean instead of bulky and large if I used dimensional lumber as planned. We decided that the bbed posts looked good at 2 1/4" square. This is an awkward measurement because it doesn't match any off-the-shelf lumber sizes. It did; however, match the thickness of three sheets of 3/4" plywood.
Knowing that the bed was going to made up of interlocking elements of laminated plywood really helped with the production. All I needed to do to prep materials was set my table saw fence to 2 1/4" and start cutting down some sheet goods. There are some pieces that weren't 2 1/4", but the material prep was pretty straight-forward; rip sheet into strips and crosscut to length.
Now that the strips of plywood were cut to length, I began gluing up the strips to make up the bbed frame beams. This canopy bed needed a headboard assembly, a footboard assembly, two lower stringer to support the mattress, and two upper stringer to join the head and foot board assemblies together. Each assembly would in essence be a large rectangular frame; two upright side beams that would capture the head or footboard capped with a horizontal beam.
The design called for a clean exterior lacking any visible hardware. This design constraint was a fun challenge. To minimize fasteners, I decided to employ a mortise and tenon style joinery technique. By stacking the plywood in a way that left a space to interlock with other beams, I could simply glue these joints together creating a strong assembly.
The lower, mattress holding stringers were made of two sheets of outward-facing plywood and an interior shorter strip that was glued and screwed in place for extra strength. This shorter piece would hold the mattress slats in a later step. Now that the headboard assembly, footboard assembly, and the four stringers were glued together, I added some thick edge banding to all of the exposed plywood edges. Now they were ready to assemble.
To connect the headboard and footboard assemblies together with the lower stringer, I decided to use commercially available bed frame hardware. Like most bed frames, I wanted this canopy bed to come apart if needed. This two-part hardware kit is screwed into the head/footboards and connecting brackets are screwed into the ends of the lower stringer. When hooked together and tightened, the lower bed frame is fairly rigid. We used smaller hardware sets because of the minimal nature of the bed, so we added some reinforcement screws from the back of the headboard to add rigidity.

Because we designed this modern canopy bed in Fusion 360, we can easily transfer that model into our digital plans process. Fusion 360 allowed us to easily change the bed's parameters so we can offer you digital plans for this bed in 4 different mattress sizes! There you will find a link to the products we used (Amazon Affiliate links) as well as the plans that include easy-to-follow steps and cut lists.

Now we're wondering what it would take to be able to make a canopy bed that could also be used as a monkey bars lol 🤣

Reading this made me start to run through my memories to remember the first thing I ever built. I guess technically it would be a fence because my dad would constantly make us fix the fence. The first thing I built from scratch that I designed myself was a hydraulic press. I didn’t want to spend over $100 bucks on a crappy one when I needed one for a project years back. I went to the hardware store and bought tons of stuff to build my own. When all was said and done I spent more than I would have buying a brand new professionally made one. Haha! It was still really fun making something technical like that from scratch though.
So I made a canopy bed to use as a home cinema: on the one side you mount the projector at the top, at the foot end you mount the screen. Perfect if you live in an apartment and can't mount anything on the walls but wanna enjoy movies in bed

At each of the joints I'd suggest adding a letter so if you disassemble it you know how it goes together. The top bit especially will be a pain to get the dowels matched when high up and matching A-A, B-B will make life a lot easier.

I'm glad you mentioned the whole monkey bar thing, lol. When you build stuff, you need to take into consideration all of the creative ways kids will perform quality control. You also have to take into consideration all of the creative ways kids will find to hurt themselves on your project. It would be interesting to see you make a video about your design process in general, as well as for kids specifically

Very good point.
Love it, Bob. Nicely done. Idea: during this 'down' time, what about some update videos of past projects (e.g. how are the double bunk beds doing, and what about that attic closet?). Just an idea.
When I built my bed, I used 1 X 4 for my slats, and I screwed /glued a piece to the bottom of them to make them T shaped. They don't bend and I don't need a center support.
That canopy bed looks amazing! The lights add a really nice touch.
I love the design of this 😊 It will be a really great surprise when I build it. Thank you 😊 ॐ
Great project! Looking forward to watching the bed walkthrough in the fusion course.
Love how it turned out! I sometimes wonder how plywood will look in a situation like this, but you really elevated it. Nice job!
I never realized edge banding came that wide! Great build and it definitely gives me some food for thought building my next bed frame.
Wait whoa WHAT?! 3.01M?! DUDE, WHAT IN A WORLD?! CONGRATS!!!!!!

Great work Bob & a nice way to use plywood & make it look terrific! Your daughter will enjoy that for a very long time. Oh, and liked that lighting as well....👍👍😉😉💡💡💡💡

Hey Bob, I love the video as usual! Side note, if your LED lights are flickering when dimming you may not have the right switch. 13:04 I used 2x4 joint hangers for my bed as opposed to pocket screws to set the middle support beam into. That way it’s removable without any unscrewing or anything, just pop it out and you’re good to go.

Was going to say the same thing. Hard to believe the head/foot board with top cross piece would make it out of the basement and through a normal doorway. One of the reasons you leave off the canopy cross piece till assembly.
was hoping i would find a way for me to build one, but using the plywood is really smart, also now i can show my employer how to properly use edge banding( he didn't know haha) thanks bob:)
Loved this video... my 10 year old has been angling for a new bed...
great bed, I have made one myself as well. it looks like you never screwed the slats down, one way to avoid them moving you can attach a strap across the bottom of them, that way they always keep their spacing and can be stacked when the bed is taken apart, just an idea
Awesome!! You great work

Hey. Thanks for the tip on cutting the bed slats a hair short. I made my son a nice bed from walnut about a year ago and the chatter from the slats is terrible.
I made 2 beds about 20 years ago. I never thought of making them from plywood. I made one from poplar and one from maple.

As a father myself, I find you inspiring.
Gotta admit, I much prefer solid wood for the frame and steel or rebar reinforced ply for the sleeping platform. But I'm also pretty rough on my furniture. For a girl that age you ought to buy a couple of strands of fairy lights to wrap around the bedposts and crossbars. Bonus points for ones made to look like flowers on a vine.

When building a project that requires hardware, that still has to be determined, if the mounting holes line up partially with a glue joint do you recommend looking for new hardware or redesign the piece you are building?
