My 11 year old nephew and I made a couple of these for our recent camping trip. He was SO excited to use it. It was a success all the way around. We had him be responsible for one of his meals a day; he had to use this stove each time. He made soup, grilled cheese, and boiled his own hot water for hot chocolate. AWESOME!

To Cathie Zimmerman - regarding your camping trip with your nephew. I've read many of the comments under this mini wood stove idea and am quite offended by the apparent idiocy and meanness. It is GREAT to read your comments and it made me so happy to hear that you're actually applying this information - by USING it and by having your nephew be responsible for one of his meals each day. THANKS FOR SHARING THAT. I certainly appreciate hearing comments like yours. Best wishes to you and your family.

Just attempted a boil test using this stove (made from a Fisherman's Friend lozenge tin). I am at 2000 feet and didn't quite get a rolling boil but the water was definitely sterilized. Next test will be done adding one inch extensions to the rods (two inch is the longest I could find) to see if the extra clearance will help. Since this uses tiny twigs as a fuel source, holds the fire kit, and still fits in a pocket I will be including it in my backpack!

John! I just wanted to show my respect. Im an ex recon soldier from Britain who loves working with survival training now. I think you have one of the coolest, smartest, and most importantly useful channels I've ever come across on the net. I have spent hrs scouring the net for new tricks for the outdoors. This is a terrific channel, so many thanks for your knowledge. You are to blame for my tool bill going up hahahah! (drills, clamps!) But seriously mate, keep producing, i get excited about your knowledge + i enjoy making the stoves as gifts for friends which they love. In some one elses video i saw he had a single reel fishing hand line and a wood carving set (for making wooden spoons in the field) and a norwegian guy who cooks an egg inside a carved out potato! If you wish to leave your email on here i will send you some pdf survival books created by one of the men who trains the special forces over here (Britain) just to say thank you, Best wishes from over seas. That little Altoids stove is sharp!! It's just enough if your by yourself to heat up a little water for coffee or tea, and can support a small light skillet (back pack size, of course) to heat up a mix of whatever you want. Thanks for sharing brother. God Bless & Take Care.

Looks like a fun little project to do while suffering cabin fever in MN. I think I will place the pot stand bolts in a tripod orientation and a little closer for a 400mL cup. I'll add a small "Dollar store Turkey Pan" windscreen and use an esbit tab. This should be enough to heat a cup of tea on a winter hike nice and quiet like.

Awesome idea! You can improve the airflow to make it directional by drilling the 3 side holes on the back (hinged side) and ajusting the lid to a vertical position when burning so that you can blow air under the fire through the holes and not blow off the burning fuel off the grate. Another idea is to include a small metal straw to the kit by, ripping apart an old telescoping radio antena and cutting one of the sections to size. And the last idea i got for u is - make a handle for the thing so you can move it when its hot adding a removable angled metal hook/handle that can be stored in the box.

@Faifstarr : I love your idea for the handle...to move the stove when it's hot...but the lid would need three inches of clearance to become a *vertical* wind screen. I'm going to try it both ways (2" and 3" posts). Three inch posts may raise the center of gravity and make it too unstable, but they would still fit in the tin.

But a person could always find something to fashion another stove out of when the people with expensive gas camping stoves run out who will be the leader of the pack... Maybe you could do this to improve on it: bend the sides of the hardware cloth a bit longer, so the sides touch the bottom and it sits right against the lid of the tin. It would raise the wood up a bit, creating airflow below the fire. That way you wouldn't need any holes through the tin, and it would keep your fire kit dry in the rain. I used to use an Altoids tin when I was a Boy Scout for my fire kit. It wasn't completely water proof - you wouldn't want to hold it under water. But if it DID fall in the water it would float, and kept rain from getting inside.

Come on people lets use a little common sense here, if you just want it for some general usage like boiling water for coffee when fishing or a couple of days of not too o.t.t. hiking its a good general design, you can tailor it to your personal needs, if you're going into more potentially extreme conditions or you're staying out there for a longer length of time you would tailor your kit accordingly weighing up the pro's and cons of what is going in your backpack to that situation. I think this design has potential, thanks for uploading I.A!

Don't get me wrong, I love portable stoves of all kinds, it's a weird fascination of mine. But is a wood stove THIS small really of much use? Just seems like you'd have to constantly put more kindling on it and it would generate more smoke than anything. I dunno, you tell me - am I wrong? Is it more useful than I'm thinking?

Chad Lindsey You can supplement a Jet Boil with one of these and save fuel. One of these might not be convenient for making coffee or warming up water quickly. That is where a fuel stove would come in handy. However, when in camp and have some time to gather dry kindling, one of these would be perfect for rehydrating meals and saving fuel for when you need it.

IntenseAngler Enjoyed your video! Question... *LONG TERM APPLICATION?* I was wondering how many total "cooking" hours a person could actually get out of such a thin aluminum & hardware fabric unit like that. Let's say you had to sanitize at the very least 1gal of water for yourself daily. Fortunately your unit seems to provide a fire size equivalent to that of at least 4-6 candle flames (1 candle flame =1,000°C /1,800°F [air-paraffin]) which could sterilize a small container (16oz) of water in approximately 3 minutes. As long as that container was able to repeatedly be set over a fire without being destroyed then you'd spend at least 24 minutes a day sanitizing your 16oz container 8 separate times in order to get just 1 gallon of clean water. Assuming you sanitized all 128oz (1gal) at once in order to save set up time then that we can average 30 minutes daily of cook time just for water. We haven't even started cooking food yet! Now let's say cooking at least twice a day, 30 minutes max. at a time, plus the water, would mean this little unit would have to routinely endure an average of 30 minutes of burning 3 times daily! Now since it'd have a cool down period in between uses, the only thing that really matters is how much of its structural integrity remained intact after 30 minutes of burning. Because if it wasn't harmed at all then this unit may last for quite a long time with proper care. But if, on the other hand, after only a few uses it appears damaged or the metal is weakened then its performance may be short lived. *WARNING! BEGINNING PREPPERS WHO MAY READ THIS POST:* Caveats regarding Safe Water Sanitizing: Very dirty water should be filtered first with a cloth or other material to remove sediments, and/or let stand for awhile to allow sediments to settle - then pour off clearer water on top. Boiling water will NOT remove chemical toxins that may be present. beforeitsnews.com/self-sufficiency/2013/03/cooking-with-three-candle-flames-2-2454134.html modernsurvivalblog.com/health/how-long-to-boil-drinking-water/ www.survivalgrounds.com/boiling_water.php www.epa.gov/safewater/faq/emerg.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire#Flame_temperatures I'm just curious to know after so much effort (as oppose to gathering some rocks in a circle, etc) if it'll end up being a "Prepper Novelty" that can be given as a gift, or a real long term solution & bugout bag necessity. (Of course "long term" is always relative because we know EVERYTHING comes to it end) I still love it! Genius! Liberty = Peace & I pray you & yours always have both!

***** *_CURIOSITY or JOKING?_* Who are you asking? & what specifically are you asking about? If you're replying to potch paul statement of: "_24 hrs later the pot boiled_" consider that he may have been making a joke. In essence he may have been insinuating that after all that work & putting a small pot on the fire, what if '24 hrs later it finally started to boil'. Also, this mini wood stove & video was produced by IntenseAngler, so I doubt "potch paul" was a part of this experiment or has tested it himself. Or perhaps you yourself are making a joke that, that tiny stove would take 24 days to boil! HAHAHA! Now if instead you're asking me, about my calculation of "_24 minutes_" that is the estimated TOTAL time it would take to sanitize 16oz of water, 8 separate times, for 3 minutes each time. (I do not recommend attempting to sanitize any container larger than 16oz on a stove this size because, [aside from not knowing if the mini stove could handle the weight & girth] I doubt this stove's size of fire could ever sufficiently heat up more water at one time, to be safely sanitized. With that said, water in a smaller 8oz or 12oz container would get sanitized faster than even a 16oz, I just know 16oz is the maximum amount of water for the size fire featured in this video) Remember that after each 16oz of water is sanitized you will need a clean 1gal container to pour it into because you would then need to refill the 16oz container with UNsanitized water again to repeat the process 7 more times *(24 total minutes)* in order to finally get 1gal worth of safe drinking water. and *ALL THIS* is just for 1 person..... *_Liberty = Peace & I pray you always have both!_*

***** Nice to see someone living up to their screen name. As for writing to you, you really can't be that slow. Here on KZread when you comment as part of a thread *_EVERYONE_* in that thread gets "Notification" on their account. So since you failed to specify who exactly you were asking your question to & since your question included a reference that easily could apply to more than one person, I politely asked you who you were replying to. I then preceded to offer several responses based on your anticipated reply to me. 1. If you were speaking to potch paul 2. If you were just making your own joke (which I thought was funny) 3. Or if you were speaking to me I offered a logistical answer in hopes of helping you out. Simply saying you weren't speaking to me would have sufficed but instead you come at me screaming, cursing & insulting??? You're lonely. I get it. You feel used & abused. I get it. But despite the brainwashing you've suffered please know that the American civilian populace is not your enemy. Thus, if someone wastes their time perfecting their golf game, progressing through levels on some stupid video game I'm sure you wouldn't flip out on that. But because I live on the coast & under an annual threat of hurricanes I prepare to be part of the solution next time, to help my neighbors during the next natural or man-made disaster, rather than be one of the many *_"sheeple"_* who will need help due to their lack of forethought & selfishness expecting the "guvment tit" & everyone else to bail them out when their on the roof of their flooded house crying about how _"somebody else has got to be responsible for all their children"._ BTW, regardless of my respect for the sacrifice servicemen endure for the level of freedom we still enjoy, unless you have suffered some brain injury I *NEVER EXCUSE* mental laziness & the fact that you went to Iraq *_TWICE_* is evidence that *YOU* are the dumb shit! Again, if you suffered some brain malfuction, fine, you're forgiven for being a dipshit. Otherwise you're just a lonely pathetic loser, bitching about how *_"I WENT OVER THEIR 2X"_*. We have plenty of vets that are now Preppers. Great men! *S O S U C K I T U P & M A N U P !!* Don't you EVER complain about doing your duty or attempt to use that to raise yourself above your fellow Americans! You made a *CHOICE!* Wrong or right, that's correct, it was *YOUR FUCKING CHOICE!* We didn't have a draft, dumb shit! Okay. I'm calm again now & your spanking is over. You are not allowed to play the "Wounded Soldier card" ever again, or "Race card" or "Poverty card", etc. From this day forward you will remember know one owes you a damn thing. Now, since you failed to discern the peaceful attitude in which I approached you last time & especially the way I closed my post by admitting that the "Liberty" we enjoy gives us "Peace" & that I was willing to pray that God always bless you with both freedom & peace in your life, So this time I will close expecting you to reply to this post with only 2 words that prove your maturity, self control & your misunderstanding. Then all will be forgiven between us. The 2 words I expect you to post is: "I apologize" Now prove to us you're a real man, a real American.

Rey Nahpets Sorry if I've offended you. Allow me to ask you a question: When you hear the word "Christian" does it on some level translate in your mind as "Prefect" or "Unoffensive"? It does mean "Christ-like" so in that you were correct in bringing my bad behavior to my attention. It just ticks me off when I was just trying to start a nice conversation & somehow he could only read my post in a negative or sarcastic tone of voice. But I'll work on it. thanks.

I used 1/4 inch mesh cut to 3 1/2" x 5" as I found 3 inches too narrow. 1/4 inch mesh is the smallest you can get, so the mesh used in this vid is 1/4. I was told by several hardware folk that 1/4 is the smallest made. The dimensions fit (mostly) those in the vid. Thanks for posting this!

Not a bad idea. A very nice presentation and simple enough directions that even some of these idiots making comments here should be able to understand. What is with you people? For those of you who have nothing better to do than make disparaging comments, I say..Get a LIFE! This man isn't trying to sell you anything or force you into anything. If you don't like what you see, turn to a different video, walk away or turn your damned computer off. No one is making you do anything you don't like and if you have to get some sort of self satisfaction by bad mouthing or demeaning someone else so you can feel superior, you are SICK and need a mental health sabbatical. If you think you are so superior, where the hell are your videos showing the world how much better you are? And, as far as longevity, etc. This isn't meant as a long term, end all...it's meant as a quick fix in emergency situations. Pffft....you can lead a horse to water but there are just some horses too stupid to drink it.

I would add a step and sand down the edges of the grating, lest you get finger cuts. This might be compact, but it's not really any better than putting a kettle on 4 rocks around a small stick fire. NONE of the these so-called wood gas stoves actually produce much wood gas. I am working on a version that will create a flame ring identical to a NG stove and would leave charcoal as a byproduct to use as the primary heat source that generates the actual wood gas the next time you use it. Safety is my main concern, you never want wood gas to build up any pressure near a heat source.

Sure, I can carry a small thermos for that, but where's the fun in that? I did replace the grill with some material from a modern day automotive air filter.
