For my purposes, I could use those for indoor when I start summer seedlings early february. I get stackable bins that the lids are also clear, not drill holes in the lid portion, and I would be able to stack them where my space is limited. And when it's not 10 degrees outside I'll have the flexibility to move them onto my deck in the sun in March and April. Great idea! Thanks.

Would you drill the holes through the sides if you stack them then? I think thats a great idea about stacking

I made one for my Bamboo and citrus trees.. I live in Iowa and I have started many lemon and tangerine trees from seeds. I have also started PINEAPPLE and BAMBOO and Kiwi from seeds. The cat ended up getting the kiwi seedlings 🌱 I used a clear tote with clear lid just like the tote you used in the video. I put a small 12v fan and an incubator thermometer and heater in it. The thermostat is set at 83°F-> the fan is to help circulate the are around

It's easier to heat a nail and melt the small holes. Super quick too. I hold the nail with pliers or vise grips

That's definitely another way to do it. I prefer this way though personally, as I hate the smell of melting/burning plastic, and being slightly klutzy, I'd rather not have to handle a hot, pointy object! Haha, thanks for watching and thanks for the alternative method!

I just take my 12g shotgun with bird shot and blast away.

Great inspiration. I use the totes that have clear tops. Makes it easier to take in and out of the house as weather changes.

This looks like a good starter plan for my garden. I think I am going to use it. I am also thinking that after the greenhouse plants have been finished I can use the container to store my empty planter pots or maybe extra planting soil in it. so having a container like this will come in handy as well as making a nice size starter Garden. Thumbs up Garden Dragon!

I have been using totes for greenhouses for quite some time now,I never use the top of the tote it is not needed,in fact it's better without it and you should put a couple rows of holes at the bottom so as to draw air in from the bottom and out through the top,just put the tote on ground and put dirt around it in order to seal to keep the slug out.

Love this! No extra fuss. My only note is that I will be adding the recycled water bottle self watering planters to this for seedlings. Less worries about them drying out in the sun.

OMG!! Finally a diy greenhouse that I can make. I'm not a gardener but I would like to plant some of my fav veggies n fruits. I wanted to start small. This looks like it fits what I'm trying to do without all the carpenter stuff. I want to try first off doing spinach and green beans. Can I do this in this type of method? Great video. Very easy instructions. Not all that extra talking or crazy music. Just straight to the point. BEST diy mini greenhouse that I have seen. Thanks for sharing. Btw, how'd your peppers, etc turn out?

Destinyatk thank you for the feedback! This greenhouse should work for just about any crop you want to pop in there. My pepper seedlings did very well in this, but were completely decimated by a horde of apparently starving slugs when it got too warm out and I had to open it to prevent fried pepper babies. I wish you better luck with your beans and spinach! Happy growing!

GardenDragon try finely crushed eggshells around your plants. The slugs will hate all those tiny shards and look elsewhere. :)

Ha ha ha, There’s always a scammer, in everyone of these of these video.

A good way to stop the cracking when drilling is to place a board Dow put the plastic side you are drilling flat against the board. It keeps the plastic from flexing and cracking with the pressure from the drill bit. I have a board specifically for drilling plastic.

Try using a flat wood bit and run the drill in reverse. I use one to drill perfect holes in my garden buckets.

This is great, I was debating on how to make a mini greenhouse but this is so easy and perfect! Thanks for sharing!!

the comparison with your hole-less bin at the end was great! I was wondering on the air flow for my project as well, whether I should seal it like a terrarium or leave some spaces for air flow. Would've been great to see the results with your peppers as well. Do you think the size of the holes made the trick? A bit bigger and the condensation wouldn't have been that good? Anyway thanks for sharing!

My thoughts exactly. The holes have to be the right size to restrict air but not stop it. Allowing for condensation to build.

Did you need to take lid off to drill drainage holes on rim? With it being upside down the lip will catch water so if you put holes in bin lip that would catch more wouldn't it? I don't know but thanks for great video.

Good job, but I recommend using a wood bit instead of the masonry bit. The masonry isn’t sharp and required you to really push hard and melt it through, whereas the wood bit will be sharp at the end and cut right through with minimal pressure. But good video thank you!

Will this protect my plants from overnight frost? I want to get my plants started NOW even though planting in my zone doesn't really happen until May...

There's all kinds of frost covers, so yes, this would protect most plants from frost.

OMG I live in Scotland and when you said what temperature it was outside I thought I better rethink my greenhouse and get a heated one. We are lucky if it gets to 18c in the summer. I love your idea though fantastic. Love from Scotland x

im hoping to do something like this for my orchids. I have 5 phalaenopsis orchids and i live in arizona. Ive had my orchids for almost 2 years now and I have only ever lost 1. (3$ in the clearance section with 1 root. i was sad but its okay.) I tried to use the bottom half of an old bug box my friend used to catch grasshoppers in to release them elsewhere and it retained moisture TOO well. this helps a lot. thank you so much for giving input about DIY greenhouses

You can put a handle on top also. A Rope Cord ,Twine, etc thru the top holes to carry. Also I wonder if you can secure it to ground in case of wind, etc.

I use a soldering iron to make holes. That way my totes don't crack.

Better still! To avoid splintering the plastic through downwards pressure, heat a large nail (on gas oven flame if poss) and melt your holes through.

Will this work well in a very cold and snowy area?

What is the lowest night temperature you would leave this in? I start seeds indoors here in zone 6 in Feb. but we still have some nights with freezing temperatures after that. Would you wait til after freezing temperatures were over? Just seems like the vegetation would die, does this hold heat? I'm sure you can tell I don't know a lot about this, just learning.

Exactly what I was going to say. I may try this anyway, but I don't expect it to hold up for more than a year. (I have a previous container that I left outside and forgot about and it SHATTERED after prolonged sun exposure.)

Hello. Will this method allow seedlings to germinate and grow e.g. tomato, cucumber, peppers, if the outdoor temperature is around 7 celcius in the day around -1 at night? How much heat will this mini-greenhouse retain at night?

How much do you water these after? Is it a light/medium spray over the rows of cups in general? - Or more of a good soaking (but not drowning) - of each individual cup? My dad bought a mini plastic container greenhouse, with cover, and I don't believe has holes in it - with "peat". You soak the Peat balls, wrapped in a thin netting, which then expand/blow up big. You then add the seed/seeds - and give it another good soak. I'm concerned my dad isn't watering them enough now though, he's not the smartest person and may be incorrect with wherever he heard his watering idea from. Condensation stays on the top of the container etc., it's warm/humid in there, and the peat hold moisture well too...but my dad now is only giving the peat/sprouts a light water spray with a bottle - like generally over the peat rows (in this video - it'd be the equivalent of spraying light/medium - over the rows oi solo cups/pink containers). I feel like doesn't give the plants a good drink. I'm no garden-master, but once a plant sprouts/is growing - you want to give each individual solo cup/plant a good soaking drink right? Not overboard/drowning it - but it'd be some good sprays right into the solo cup (in this video). I feel like his lighter/medium spray over the rows in general, is just having that moisture cling to the walls/lid, keeping everything damp - yet not giving each plant the good drink it needs. Am I wrong, it's a light/medium spray - to keep the container damp - all each plant needs to grow strong? Thanks for your time, great video on a homemade version.

Excellent idea,but use a haeted iron to drill holes.It is slower,but it doesnt crack.

Do you need the holes on the bottom? I thought the point of a greenhouse was to have less moisture escape. and I didn’t think the holes in the top were to “let rain water in” I thought the holes were more for air.

This works. Have used for years to start seeds. A suggestion on the holes. Skip the drill. Get a cheap soldering iron from hobby shop. Heat it up an punch holes instantly. No broken plastic and really fast. I don't punch holes in top as very little watering is needed. Plus too much moisture in enclosed container is death to seedlings. Rather I punch ventilation holes along sides - top and bottom. A lot of holes as ventilation is really important to help avoid damping off. A tall contain is good as air flow in through bottom holes and out through top holes is encouraged - a chimney effect.

If I'm understanding what you're doing correctly, then no. The holes are to just there for water flow during the rain/snow melt off. They are actually completely optional, and especially unnecessary when inside. Just remember to water the pot when it's getting dry and to be careful about how much sunlight hits the bagged pot. There are plenty of videos around for doing just that, so I highly suggest continuing to search around and gather as much info as you can. Good luck and happy growing!

Swiftfeather hi just read yr comment if its a seedling use a softdrink bottle cut it at the desired height & put a little bit of water on the medium (soil/potting mix etc) & then put the top of the softdrink bottle (lid attacthed) back on the bottle its another greenhouse version... also able to be kept inside, if u r living in frost/snow or really cold areas.... hope this greenhouse version helps u out. 😊

I use a large clear tote for all my seedlings. No holes at all. Set them down in the tote in their little peat pots. Put the lid on when they're outside during the day. I put a thermometer in the tote so I'll know if it gets too warm. If it gets too warm inside, I set the lid ajar to keep it at a reasonable temp. This is the second year that I've done this. So far, I love this process of starting seeds. Going outside everyday keeps them from getting too leggy and it serves as a sort of hardening off while they grow into little sturdy plants. Because it's being done on the way through this process. Right now I am trying to figure out if I can put the whole tote out in my little greenhouse. It's just March now.
