the point using elastic is to avoid transfer vibration from the body to the mic, using straight short wires will create a patch to those noises.

As an audio nerd/engineer I’m in a great amount of pain that we couldn’t hear a sound sample recorded with the microphone. 😔 but great video!

@@water-dust Yea, im a bit bummed out as i thought he was gonna use a decent quality electret capsule. That crappy apple headset mic really lets down the craftsmanship that went into this.

Thinking quickly, Levsha constructs a homemade microphone using only some string, some brass, and a microphone.

mic in apple earbuds are good tho, at least if comparing to some wired headset out there in comparable or less prices (I got mine in half prices so my impression is even stronger)

@@Armorpiercer I’m an audiophile with friends that record music that I hang out with often. This isn’t about opinion, they are objectively just not that good.

I don't like the music, I always turn it off in videos liek this. I'd rather hear him give explanations. Plus he didn't even test the result or let us hear how it sounds like.

That mini lathe setup is pure ingenuity let alone the project itself.

Amazing craftsmanship, and amazing filming skills too! Only when I started to film my projects I realized how difficult is to get good shots while working!

So, this mic looks amazing, And I am interested to hear it! I wish he would do some recordings with it and have a before and after. I tend to think that it would be improved with it just being far better isolated in the shock mount like that, and no longer in plastic.

Better watch the video by DIY Perks, which gives full explanations .
Overall it looks really good, but that cable going around the mic looks off, it should've been shorter and directly under the mic.

Maybe it would be just a little harder to mount the cable if was shorter but yes would be better

It would have been very easy to have excess wiring, then just tuck the extra in the base when it’s mounted. That’s how all other wiring is done in houses, automation, industrial applications, etc. kinda surprised he didn’t after all the painstaking perfectionism he performed.

@@patrickpaes7817 he did it in order to minimise the strain on the wires because of movement. Since the microphone housing is held in place by rubber band strands, it means that it can move and rotate around. And if he made the wires too tight (running straight from the housing to the connector) then the elastic mounting system for the housing would be pointless and the wire will break at the solder joints over time (except if he added strain reliefs, which I didn't see any in the video).

um matey didn't even put power into it, might have sounded better with some voltage feeding the mems mic as per spec. He just linked signal and gnd as far as I can tell.

@@pacman10182 I'm guessing it's not Tip ring and Sleeve, by the looks of it, the other ring around the could give power as well. I could be wrong. I've been designing boards with mems mics in the last few weeks, maybe there are some passive mems that I haven't come across. I don't own an apple phone or these parts, so just a guess. EDIT: not so shitty as well, if you add a resonator as per datasheet. The mems mics are awesome; engineers can however make dubious sacrifices, that may impede their performance!

@@pacman10182 ok so I just had a look they're called trrs plugs, and contrary to what I said, they carry Right/Left headphone out, mic and ground. Hmm now I'm stumped how the mems device gets the power.
If you make a microphone from another the number of microphones in the world don't change. -Batman They do if the one that you just made doesn't work....
