How to Make a Lunar Mosaic | High Point Scientific

In our first post-processing tutorial, our team member, Kyle, goes over his preferred method to creating high quality lunar mosaics.
Software used:
Planetary Imaging PreProcessor (PIPP): sites.google.com/site/astropi...
Autostakkert: www.autostakkert.com/?source=...
RegiStax V6: www.astronomie.be/registax/?s...
Regarding Microsoft ICE: Unfortunately, after uploading the video we learned that Microsoft has ceased downloads on ICE beginning in early-2021 on their website. You will have to download and use an alternative panorama stitching program: alternativeto.net/software/im...
Alternatively, you can use Photoshop's built in mosaic builder should you have Photoshop.

    Hello everyone! A quick addendum on the video: At one point in the video, an error was made regarding PIPP - it stands for Planetary Imaging PreProcessor, not what is said in the video. This is not the only method to go about doing this, just Kyle's preferred method. There is a lot more you can do here! We learned after the video was uploaded that Microsoft ICE was removed from Microsoft's website in 2021. We don't know why this was the case, but we're disappointed as this was a valuable asset for the astrophotography community. However, you can find an alternative stitching program. Photoshop also has a built in stitching resource should you have access to it.

    Hello a great video and an excellent photo iv been trying moon imaging for about a year now and have just upgraded my camera been using the svbony 105 and wanted to get the hole moon in as its basically impossible unless ur telescope is around 300mm in length and literally stumbled across this video u made it look quite easy wich means it isn't 🤣 but this video means I can give it a good go anyway thanks for helping us newbies 👍

    You don't need to use PIPP to convert AVIs to SER. SharpCap and Firecapture record in SER natively. The only limiting factor is if your camera does not support the SER format. Autosakkert3 will stack AVIs as well. The only reason I say this is to reduce the steps needed to create the mosaic. if you can stack your video without preprocessing, you don't have to download or learn another piece of software to achieve the results you want. :-)

    All good points! For the purposes of the video I recorded with a AVI so that we could actually preview the video before loading it into PIPP. Also a useful tip for those using a DSLR as you can convert from a MOV (for example) to a SER.

    I have a stupid question, but it's the only thing that wasn't shown in this video. How exactly would you frame each video to perfectly match the edge of the next one? Do you just have to use your own judgement or is the a special way of doing that?

  • @highpointscientific

    @highpointscientific

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's really your own judgement. While you're taking an image of each panel of the Moon, try to make sure at least one or two identifiable crater or feature stays common in each of them. Copernicus, Tycho, et cetera. Doing so requires a pretty good understanding of the Moon's geography.

    Hello Kyle, my scope and sensor size on camera are small, I estimate that would take 15-20 panes on a full moon. Do you have any suggestions on how to capture this many panels and not miss any? Is there any software that automates this process?
