    For the past 2 weeks, weather has been great. For the coming 2 weeks it looks great. In that timeframe, there was only one bad night with heavy rain and storm. For a few hours. Precisely when the Lunar eclipse was happening. Now I need to wait for only 3 years...

    For reviewing images while still on the memory card Fast Raw Viewer is convenient. Rejects are moved to a _reject folder on the card. Only images that pass this pre-screening are imported. The pre-screening is done on a full size monitor, a more informative view than the camera back display.

    Hi Nico, great tutorial as usual! I'm referring to this video for the recent total lunar eclipse, but I encountered some problems: 1. When I ticked the “lunar full disc” optimize option in PIPP and chose the “surface feature” for stabilization mode, after pressing “do processing”, I will get “failed with errors” in the status box. I have searched this problem online but there seems not to be a straight answer to this particular case. It is fine with “object/planetary”. When I do not tick the optimization, the “surface feature” works, but there will be only one image in the generated folder. 2. After ticking AOI (assuming the processing is fine), when I expand the area too much, a Windows error will pop up: something like “unhandled exception”, but I think I’ve figured that out: the area cannot be bigger than 5000x5000 pixels. 3. While using DSS and lowering the threshold to the lowest 2%, I got a result of 2 stars. After deactivating the “median filter”, I got something like 4 stars. I thought it’s enough for alignment. However, after registering for a long time, a warning popped out saying “only one frame out of 48 frames will be stacked”. I also searched this problem and one possible issue seems to be the problem with focusing. I admit that I did not focus the camera perfectly that night, but when checking the pictures one by one, I can easily identify 4 stars in every frame. 4. This is actually not very important: since I first failed with PIPP, I tried to directly use AutoStakkert to align and stack the frames, but no matter how many alignment points I set (both dozens manually and tens of thousands automatically), the result was always not good (bad actually, it seems to not perform alignment at all). Thank you for your time looking through this (It’s actually not a very big deal for me since after choosing the “object/planetary” stabilization mode in PIPP, I still succeed for the stacking)!😄

    Hey Nico. Hope all is well for you. I was wanting to request a potential future video. I know you have videos for a camera, tripod, and an intervalometer for beginners. It is great and I have learned a lot, especially with your processing videos. I know a lot of your channel here seems to be aimed toward newbies and gear reviews (which is great with your very fact-based and unbiased review). I know that you live in very light-polluted skies, as do I. I think you might have me beat though, as I live in Raleigh,NC. So, my request: could you maybe do a video on the gear, setup, and capture of a DSO from a very light polluted sky? So basically what scope, what camera, what filters (and why), which tracker mount, best/most efficient setup method, etc. I know that at some point it becomes almost a requirement to use plate-solving with the guide scope on your main scope, and I THINK you have to use a laptop for that. Maybe do options with a guide scope and without, and what software is best to use, what is the most efficient method of power supply for all the equipment, etc. I think that would be extremely helpful for those of us that may not be "newbies" but also aren't ready to spend $20,000 on a setup. Also, it would be great if you could do some smaller videos (maybe for 5min Fridays) and cover some of the terminology and how it relates to astrophotography, like arcsecond, backlash, back focus, etc. Just thought I would throw out some ideas that I know would be helpful for me and I would also guess that there are others that it could benefit. Maybe take Back Focus and cover what it is, how it affects astrophotography, how to account for it, and things like that. Like I said, just some thoughts. Keep up the great work, my friend!

    I had some work to do on that day, so I didn't have time to drive out of city to take shots. From where I live, air quality is not good, and it's just blurry. Also my release shutter was not working properly, so I had to take shots from touch screen on the back of my D850. At 600mm, it wobbles so much even with a light tap on the screen. After watching your tutorial, I realized I should have taken more photos, and maybe I would have more usable shots to work with.

    Great information. Some questions: Not clear why you had to rotate the image? Meaning, what caused the image to be rotated 90 degrees? Was it the Lens or Reflector or a Refractor that you used? I was fortunate to have clear skies. I used my SA to track and photograph the eclipse. So I was wondering, is there any value to stack images, taken at different exposures and go through this process? I was able to track up to 40 seconds with the tracker set to the Moon.

    Same setup, with the Star Adventurer 2i, I just changed the tracking mode to 'lunar' (moon icon). My polar alignment was very rough because I did not have a view of Polaris. For deep sky, that would be a deal-breaker, but for this it was okay since I was using such short exposures (3 seconds). If I had more time, I would have drift-aligned using the moon.

  • @NebulaPhotos

    @NebulaPhotos

    Жыл бұрын

    It will often work to just go straight into AS3 with no drawbacks (no visible difference in the final output). I showed the PIPP part to make the workflow more foolproof. Eclipses have less contrast than the moon does normally so sometimes just using AS3 for alignment will fail. Depends on a number of factors.

    If you didn't track the moon, and it moved in frame, does PIPP align the moon images accurately? I've found with Autostakkert that I have to crop each image prior to stacking, to assist the software with proper alignment, if I shoot untracked. I'm only 6 minutes into the video and probably won't watch the whole thing at this time since I wasn't able to catch the eclipse, so if you answer this question later in the video, I apologize. I've saved it to my photo editing playlist, so I will watch and reference it the next time I do have moon images to process...

  • @NebulaPhotos

    @NebulaPhotos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I don't know if I explained it properly in the video, but that is exactly why I used PIPP to make sure the images would stack properly when I got to Autostakkert. PIPP can work quite well for centering untracked images in my experience as long as you use the right settings.

    Hi Nico, whats wrong with taking a (or a few) blood moon shots and a (single) full moon regular illuminated and combine these? Thats what i did in the past. I used the blood moon as color source and the full moon as topographic „map“ for details. I didn’t find this „un-ethic“ as the regular light and bllod moon light had the same angle of reflection. So no side illumination of craters. What do you think of that?

  • @NebulaPhotos

    @NebulaPhotos

    2 жыл бұрын

    I guess it all comes down to the details. If you were truly just using the color from blood moon, and the luminance from the full moon, that wouldn't look quite right because at every stage of the blood moon, it is passing through the earth's shadow so a different part of the moon is darkest. Do you lose that variation with your method? I think beyond the color that variation in shadow is part of what makes the eclipsed moon an interesting subject.

  • @kevinashley478
    @kevinashley4782 жыл бұрын

    I will watch the entire video, and if you answer my question, then don't worry about replying. I took a ton of pictures of the eclipse during totality. The question I have is that the darkest part of the shadow moves across the upper half of the moon, so if I stack them, with that dark shadow cause any problems? It's not stationary, and I was using the 10 second delay (I didn't wanna have a cable just dangling around) so there is a total of about 15 seconds between shots. Also, I got a bunch of lead up shots, where the shadow looks like a bite out of the moon. Once it got about half way or more, I cranked the ISO to 3200 and set my exposure to just about a 1/3 of a second or 1/4 of a second. The white part was blown out, but you could see the red half nicely. So, I'm just mainly concerned with the darkest part of the shadow moving, or should I limit myself to 2-3 images stacked, so that the movement isn't noticeable? Also, is it bias frames that get rid of hot pixels?

  • @NebulaPhotos

    @NebulaPhotos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question. I wouldn't mix images of the partial phase and the total phase in to the same stack. As far as the shadow moving, yeah you may want to limit yourself to just a certain group of frames rather than stacking them all. I'd say try to stack at least 15 frames.

    I work on conservation of old photos and documents and i never use DNG converter cause it degrades a lot the image, you can see that by the size of both documents, you will loose a lot of megas, and loose megas is equal to loose quality, nothing bad to the eye when you looking at 100%, but the loss is there. Maybe it helps in better times with Pipp and DeepSky Stacker cause lighter files. I do not know another free software than DNG converter, so is a good option to someone who do not have Camera Raw or something similar. I convert in Camera Raw sometimes, but most of the time i convert in Capture One cause i use it in my daily work. The vantage of DNG converter is lighter files less storage used.

    You shouldn't be using manual draw anyways.. only as a last resort if you want to add in some areas of detail not selected by the automatic process below the "manual Draw" click box.. Start with AP size 104, Min Brightness 40, check "Replace and Multiscale"... adjust Min Brightness so the AP point cover the Bright Detailed areas of the Moon. Some AP box spilling off into space is ok,, IF too much of the AP boxes spill out.. then use smaller AP boxes. Ending up with 150-1000 AP boxes is fine.

    Help please: 0:29🆘💁‍♂🆘 I know this image is the later phase of totality, but am I correct to say the two stars below are Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali? I did notice that the moon start to cover the star more to the left, I guess Zubeneschamali and when she later showed up at the upper rim of the moon again (Should I say "StarRise" at the moon's horizon!), at about 10 o'clock position, that was the real climax of the eclipse for my sensations! as viewing it live... The problem: These two stars should be in a more oblique orientation and not a horizontal arrangement as I could see and as we see here. So if I'm wrong in naming, could anyone correct me as to which star these are? I guess farther lower in the constellation Libra or out to the lower left, maybe Lambda and Kappa from constellation Scorpio! PLEASE HELP... and THANKS for that. Long story short and WHAT A NIGHT it was. One that I won't forget in my lifetime and surely feel sad if you couldn't watch it for any reason and have to wait for another supermoon total eclipse that I believe is the next opportunity is scheduled for the year 2058! 🤪

    The three stars in a line were: HR5749, HR5756 (double star), and HR5762. The star you guessed was Zubeneschamali that was covered and then emerged on the other side was HR5756. Sounds like you had a great night!!

    is there a reason no one uses cassegrains for photography? I went to my school for a star party and they used cassegrain for viewing the moon. What is your take?

    They are used a fair amount. Especially Schmidt-Cassegrains (SCTs). I don't own one because I have limited space, and prefer the ease of refractors for my deep sky work which is what I do the most of. Cassegrains are great for lunar/planetary though!

    I was so mad. we had cloud coverage that did not allow clear views of the lunar eclipse until it was too late

    Of course it was totally cloudy right when the eclipse began until the moon went under the horizon. It's a common coincidence here in Germany... but at my location I would have seen a half eclipse at best anyway.

    PIPP is being a buggy mess and, in addition to how much of a pain it is to move the red/blue boxes, it won't let me move the red/blue boxes over the moon at all due to an untrapped value out of range error. I don't think it likes input images over 5000px wide :(

    Looks like you can work around this issue if you crop down one image of the moon and load it first - then load the rest then setup the alignment area on the cropped image.

    @@Ishan7019 The issue probably isn't the camera, but the object. North America Nebula is VERY difficult with a stock DSLR and kit lens untracked. It is very dim and mostly blocked by the stock camera's IR-cut filter. Going after one of the ones I've made videos on for untracked you will be more successful. For N. Hemisphere: Lagoon Nebula (Summer), Andromeda Galaxy (Summer/Fall), Pleiades Star Cluster/nebula (Fall/winter), Orion Nebula (Winter). Settings should be same as Canon, just in different places. Just take an afternoon at home to find everything (ISO, Shutter speed, etc.) Best of luck!

    Sorry if I keep annoying you with comments, but I was in a community with astrophotographers, and it seemed that Canon was *HIGHLY* stigmatized. Is it really that much worse than Nikon? Because I’ve already spent so much money, and I’ve seen you with Canon cameras before.

    No, you can ignore those comments. I did a video on this topic (Canon vs Nikon) if interested.
