    I just found this while researching my own plan to reduce the weight of a Fender MIJ Mustang bass. It belonged to 2 if my friends who both passed away. The original owner passed it to a mutual friend when he retired and I bought from the widow of the second owner after he passed. It plays and sounds incredible with just the single stick split pickup but it leaves me in pain for days after a gig. I'm mostly a lead player and prefer semi-hollow guitars so I'm not accustomed to the weight. I plan route out as much as I can under the pickguard and I may put a cavity in the back also. The offset body leaves so much useless wood in the lower bout but I don't want change the finish. I'm thinking of doing a small cavity or two in the back of the headstock instead of reshaping it and would like to hear from anyone who may have tried this. Your data on component weights is great; you saved me a lot of effort. If I can cut 2 lbs from this bass I'll elated. I wish there were more pic or vid of the body during and after the mods.

    @@jasonpillingmusic I got mine done. I used a Dremel with a plunge router attachment and it worked pretty well, but slower than a full size router. I put cavities under the pickguard, bridge plate, and neck joint. Also changed the tuners and it's still well balanced. I was prepared to route out the back of the headstock, which is the large Fender headstock, but it wasn't necessary. I'll post some pics if I can figure out how, but I don't see that option here. Haven't weighed it but I have no doubt it's 2 lbs lighter, maybe a little more than that.

    hello, if I cut out wood from body , will it effect tone, example stranberg headless lead guitar have body with minimum wood

    Well...every instrument is different, so I don't know. This particular instrument, I did the before and after tone test starting at 10:38 in the video. It was subtle, if noticeable at all. Personally, I think three things matter more for tone....1. your playing, 2. the pickups, 3. your amp. Cutting some wood out of the body is probably less relevant that all those.

    ya...it was fugly. No regrets...I tossed that neck immediately when the video was done and put on a fretless neck. But what I learned was to be careful about how I cut to set up the angles on the opposite side tuning key. I carefully drew it before cutting the 2nd time.

    How about the balance?

  • @jason.pilling

    @jason.pilling

    It's well balanced. The lightweight keys offset the change in body weight. It doesn't take much reduction in headstock weight to offset the larger body weight reduction because headstock weight reduction is leveraged by the length of the neck from the centre of gravity.

    I would stick with mass. I had a "lightweight" bass once and it just did not play right IMO.

    Sure, that's fine if people like the traditional setup. But, months later and I still have no regrets about this modification. Like I said in the video...it ended up feeling very nicely balanced, worked out well.

    @@jasonpillingmusic Balance was the issue. It was back in the 80's (A Framus Stratos 4?) so a while ago. IIRC, the body was really light, but the tuners on the headstock were quite heavy which just had it sliding off my neck with the tuners on the floor almost.

    @@pmjd42 yes, I have a lighter weight BC Rich that neck dives and it can be tiring on the fret arm to have the job of holding it up. With the one I modded, I made a point of swapping in lightweight tuners and I trimmed the headstock. I think I got something like 200gr / 0.5lb off the head. It doesn't dive.

    Stripping out over 2lbs from a bass is way too much... 10 to 12ounces would make a significant different without having to go to extremes

    I mean subtle but tangible reductions can be had for less work is what I really mean. Routing our a few hundred grams from under the pick guard would make a nice weight reductions and it's all concealed with the pickguard, and wouldn't result in neck dive issus etc but would feel more comfortable on the shoulder and back
