How to make a Leather Guitar Strap

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It's time to make a leather guitar strap. I'm using an existing guitar strap to make a pattern for my new leather strap. I made mine from some 9/10oz veg tanned leather. Its dyed a nice brown color with a contrasting Hayley Guitars leather patch. I think this handmade guitar strap turned out great.

Nicely done. That is a beautiful strap. In case anyone is doing this and wonders, the reason we layer and sew belts and straps in leatherwork is for added strength and stretch management. The thread helps resist stretching. Doubling and glueing two layers of leather (often with a fiber medium inside...I use Tyvek) helps resist stretching as well.

Thanks. I never thought of using a fabric between the layers. I need to get a sewing machine and try that. I'd love to make a batch of these.

@@homebuiltshop The Cobra 26, while pricey, is great for this. I use it to sew my safari and gun belts.

Simple but nice. Adding the patch with your company logo design is a nice touch. Well Done Jeff.

Thanks! 👍 Eventually, I'd love to learn to do some tooling on the leather to really spice it up.

A few of my friends and I all play guitar, some for worship for our church and are very excited about my endeavoring into leatherworking. So excited to refer to your video to use this in my arsenal of skills 🤌

one thing that i would have done on the smaller strap is put thru the strap cutter and do not cut all the way. you would have to divide the distance on the both sides to get the proper width that you need. then just finish off the cut with either a knife or and end punch.

I think thats a great idea. Then I wouldn't have to try to cut a straight line.

Always love your projects Jeff... actually I was surprised you didn't burn a larger version of the logo straight to the strap

I was going to at first. Then I thought the logo wouldn't stand out as much. I like the look of this patch better.

Looks great! Where do you even get a big slab of leather like that to begin with?

If you have a local leather supply shop, I'd check there. If not, you can order leather online. There are several great suppliers online.

Next time you burnish leather try using a clean sponge soaked in water. So much easier than using a wet finger. Just slide the sponge along the edge of the leather.
