How to make a Juniper Bonsai tree

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Learn how to make a bonsai tree yourself! In this video we show you how to create a bonsai from Bonsai nursery stock material. The tree we work on is a 12-year-old Juniper (Juniperus chinensis, Kishu), purchased at a local Bonsai center for about 150 USD.
Bonsai Empire is dedicated to share the living art of Bonsai - we created this video as a DIY tutorial to help and motivate beginners. The video is part of the online courses that we offer, for more free videos go to:

I think $150 for such an excellent little juniper is a very good price. I'm glad it fit the pot you had chosen. You explained and demonstrated the process quite well. Thanks.

I would’ve put the bonsai on a drainer so it grows faster and left it there till the point it stopped looking like a spiral But this is still a really good job and design

Thanks Uriel. The tree is doing well - growing strongly now in spring. We'll do an update in a year, when the foliage will have matured and the tree will look great!

Some suggestions: First, prepare the new pot in advance of unpotting the tree. Second, prune more of the very long roots prior to repotting instead of winding them up in the new pot. Third, trim away the roots sticking up out of the soil in the new pot.

Hi John, preparing the pot makes sense - if you know which pot you'll use (we had a few options). And I would not recommend trimming those long roots in this case, as the root mass wasn't that strong. Better to wind them up, and prune on the next repotting when the tree is stronger.

Beautiful tree! I have a similar spiral trunk Itoigawa that I'm slowly working on. It looks like you put in the soil a small touch of zeolite. I noticed as soon as the water hit the soil a few rocks turned green. Is that zeolite, or something else like fertilizer?

  • @bonsaiempire

Its the soil mix indeed, fertilizer was added later.

@@bonsaiempire If you still have this tree, perhaps make a video showing it's progress and what you're doing to the tree a year after you filmed this.
