How To Make A High-Pressure Power Steering Hose At Home!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Unlike fuel and AC lines, power steering hoses are much more difficult to make at home without very expensive hydraulic crimping equipment. You cna always make a wire template and have a hose made at a local hydraulic shop, but where's the fun in that? Not to mention the hose will be ugly basic black hose. When we originally installed the hydroboost on our 1971 Buick GS back in 2007, we used the supplied stainless steel braided hoses that came with the kit. We have since replaced two of them with some custom hoses when we converted to rack and pinion steering, but kept the original braided line. Well, it finally blew apart on us, blasting the entire car with hot power steering fluid (the top was down too!), time for a change.
We are big fans of Earl's Plumbing, and we keep a decent amount of it on hand for projects like this. We used a about 4 feet of @HolleyPerformance Earl's Power Steering hose and two Earl's 45-degree power steering hose fittings that are designed to be assembled at home. The fitting collars thread onto the hose and then the fitting itself threads into the collar, making a leak-free high-pressure hose in just a few minutes. We have had two lines made with this same stuff on the car for over 10 years with no issues, but all of the stainless lines with compression fittings failed (at the factory crimps, not the compression joints), so we won't ever be using that junk again.

Good work from France 🇫🇷. to avoid losing pressure, respect the internal diameter of the pipe.

I have a Mercedes and the high pressure hose for my car is on endless back order. Will this work on a Benz? I have heard that the high pressure line has a plastic bag liner on the inside.

@@Reddirtrodzthanks how can I go about finding hose like this with plastic liner inside? Or is that not necessary? I believe the plastic liner is what is causing it to fail but it lasted 140k miles.

@Dnasty1 I don't know enough about the Mercedes to say, but I am not aware of any issue with using a standard high pressure hose.

Why don’t you like compression fittings? They are quick and very reliable. Probably as equal as what you’re doing. No specialty tools know nothing I use power. Steering compression fittings. And it’s been running for more than five years.

Because they are difficult to assemble and they fail spectacularly like this one did. I prefer high-pressure fittings like the ones I used here or crimped fittings. It's a personal choice

@buddyrebel_Garcia this was a high-pressure braided stainless line that was factory assembled. The fitting itself broke. I hate compression fittings to be honest, they work but they suck to put together.

@@Reddirtrodz really? I thought it was piece of cake. All I did was clean the tubing. I didn’t have to flare anything I deburred the inner. Then put the compression line and then I tighten up really good. I crushed the little thing that comes in. It was very solid. I did the same on top and to be honest with you. It’s been running for five years and no issues at all. let me give you the part number so you know what I’m talking about. I bought it at Napa auto parts. It’s like a power steering hose repair kit and the part number is PN.# PS 1000. From Napa. That’s what I used.
