How to make a Gambeson

Gambeson is made in blue, white and red colors: referring to the colors of the national flag of France. Gambeson French Tricolor combines not only three colors but the different types of quilting as well. The main part of it is vertically stitched. The half-rounded quilting lines go from clavicles and under the armpits, crossing the shoulder-blades. There are horizontal stitching lines at the elbow joint on the sleeves. Such a combination of quilting lines gives perfect motion mobility. Gambeson has one layer of breathable natural cotton sheet wadding. The fastens are made as joining buttons with loops. The attractive line of eleven black buttons contrasts on the white fabric. Padded gambeson French Tricolor underlines the bodybuilt and suits guys and girls.

This is so cool to see, i always wondered how certain armour pieces are made and now seeing how you create the gambeson. This makes Forge of Svan one of the most transparent and sympathic armour makers i can think of :D

Traditionally, it was actually 3 sheets of cloth, sheep's wool, and then 3 more sheets of cloth sandwiched together. Then it was sewn together where it became and compacted. The hand sewing of Gambeson's was a mans job and it was the traditional wear of military peasants, if you were rich you could also get a chain mail shirt to go over it.

This is not how gambeson was made historically, but this is how they would have made them if they could. That batting has similar resistance to cutting as several layers of linen or cotton, and as for the sewing machine it's just plain faster. So it is not historical per se, but at the same time it is not in any way a perversion of history or an inferior product.

Anyone have recommendations on the best place to get medieval clothing (1150-1335AD) for men (English), women (Iberian) and children that also doesn't look out of place in the modern world? I was thinking that footwear like the following could suit (whilst not necessarily being perfect) Men: Sandals, Espadrilles, Ropes Sandals, Empire Sandals, Leather Thongs, Menorcan Sandals, Gladiator Sandals, Clogs, Monk Strap, Moccasins, Woven Sandals, Suede Loafer, Chukka Boots, Chelsea boots, Plimsolls, Cuban Heel Chelsea Boots, Chukka Desert Boot, Driving Shoes, Women: Strappy Tie-up Sandals, Knotted Suede Toe Post Sandal, Cross Strap flat sandals, Raffia double strap slide sandals, woven leather tie leg sandal, Mules, Clogs, Over the Knee Boots, Ballet Flats, Lace Up Knee High Boots, Stirrup Boots, Slouch Boot, Desert Lace Up Shoes, Cuban heel western Chelsea boot with buckle detail. Likewise, Quilted Clothing (like Quilted Sweatshirt, Quilted Puffer Coat, Quilted Coat, Quilted Tracksuit Pants, Quilted Tracksuit Top, Quilted Jumper) could suffice for Civilian Gambeson. I’m also thinking that Tunics (Knee, Cocktail, Midi or Maxi Length), Leggings, Tights, Long Sleeved V Neck Shirt, Tank Top, Henley Shirt, Track Pants, Hoodie, T-Shirt with Notch Neck, Driving Gloves, Suede Gloves, Leather Gloves could be used. Correct me if I’m wrong.
