How To Make A Flat Hat
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
A knitting demonstration on how I make a flat hat.
For this project I used:
1 skein of Plymouth Mega yarn (64y)
Size 9.0mm / 13US needles
Instructions:
Cast on enough stitches to make the length of the hat (how tall you need it to be vertically - say from the bottom of the ear to the crown of the head plus a couple inches for space unless you're making a skullcap - about 10" to 12" should do. 8" to 10" for a skullcap, I'd say). Your stitches-per-inch guide/gauge on your yarn label will help you determine this. (I'm a believer in gauge swatches so I advise knitting one with your yarn to see what your stitches per inch is! For instance, if you're using a yarn that's 4 stitches per inch on size 8 needles, and you knit four stitches per inch on size 8 needles, you'll need to cast on 40 stitches to get a 10" length for a flat hat with this pattern. Get it?)
For this demonstration hat I cast on 25 stitches (I think! I used the video to count because the hat was given away - it was a child's size).
Knit to however long you want your hat to be around (circumference). The average hat size for adults is about 20-22". You should really measure because people come in all shapes and sizes and you want your hat to be comfortable to wear.
Bind off. Sew up the cast on and cast off edges, then sew up one end of the tube and pull tight. Weave in your ends, turn the hat inside out and there you have it!
This hat can be made in any pattern you want using any yarn you want. Just be sure to cast on enough stitches to get the height and width you want.
This pattern was made using a modified version of the pattern found on About.com here: knitting.about.com/od/hatpatte...

I have been searching for simple way to knit a hat because I am still a beginner, I can only cast on, make this type of stitches, and cast off..... This flat hat was very simple and easy for me to do, and I am amazed fromthe result...... Thanks for this simple video :)
Thanks so much for this! I wanted to make a hat but didn’t want to have to get round needles.
This video is old and I know I just found it now but I used this technique and made my first beanie!😍
Thank you so much for this video! As a beginner knitter, this was a great project to do as I didn't want to confine myself to tedious scarves. Thanks:D
Thank you so much this really helped me a lot thank you😍😘😀😃
You're very welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful!
I'm glad you found it helpful! Maybe you could give circular needles another try with the Magic Loop method (lots of good vids here on that!). Another trick with circulars is to never use a cable longer than you need. For instance, don't try to make a 20" hat on a 29" circular. It stretches out the stitches and makes life difficult. Use a 16" instead. Hope this helps!
very easy to follow tutorial especially for a beginner just learning to knit ... definitely a winner !! Thank you

Nice to meet a fellow Browncoat! I'm glad this vid helped with your hat. I'm sure it's very cunning! THEY CAN'T TAKE THE YARN FROM ME!

This is really brilliant! So simple and you can take the basic idea and run with it. This, I think, is the hat equivalent of your little black dress. Subscribed, JUST because of this video.
Great job!! I'm just learning how to knit and this is such an easy way to get a good end result.

I hope to make more soon! I'm glad you find them helpful. Hmm. A scarf or a bag or something? I'll have to think about what would make a good tutorial. This was was a special request in the comments. Ravelry dot com should have some awesome, free, easy patterns that might be what you're looking for! Give them a try!

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner! KZread's comment notification system really leaves a lot to be desired, and I just saw this tonight! In answer to your question, yes, I'm not really sure you could! Or were you asking me, personally, if I could do it? Flat hats are knit horizontally, not vertically, so it would take some experimentation and fiddling, but you might be able find a pattern like what you want. I'm guessing it would involve one type of stitch at the beginning of a row, then another for the rest of the row, but as these hats are knit flat, I'm not sure how it would work. That said, I'd look around for a pattern anyway! Thanks for watching.
You could probably use 2 strands of worsted and be okay. I'd stay with the larger needle, I think. At least a 13US needle. Check out the pattern example link I give in the info section to see what pattern I modified and see if it will work for your double-stranded technique. It should! Hope it works! Happy knitting!
Damn, I wish I had seen this before I seamed up my first hat.
Wow thanks (I hate circular needles)
Hello, what size knitting needles do you use and how many stitches to cast on? It looks so easy so I'd like to try it out! Thanks

Hello! The info section of this vid gives all that information. For this project I used 1 skein of Plymouth Mega yarn (64y) and size 9.0mm / 13US needles. I cast on 25 stitches, but read the info there to see if it might answer your questions. Good luck with your project!
Honestly Jess, I don't know. I think it was twenty, but I'm really not sure. It was really big yarn on really big needles. Gauge was about 2 stitches per inch, if I recall correctly. Hope this helps!
Love this! I was wondering how many stitches did you cast on?

Right
I'm pretty sure it was 20, but I'm not really sure. It was really big yarn on really big needles. Gauge was about 2 stitches per inch, if I recall correctly. Hope this helps! I added a link in the info section to the pattern I modified that might also be useful.
It would've been nice if you showed how to bind off. I'm sitting here with an almost finished hat, not knowing what to do

The bind off is shown in the vid, but in case it's not clear, it's just the basic bind off (cast off). I made a vid showing the technique I use in another vid as well (titled Beginning Knitting - Casting On and Off (Long-tail). I also include a link to the pattern I used in the info section below the vid. I would hope that if you're able to knit a flat piece of fabric long enough for the flat hat shown here that you would also know how to bind it off, as I make it clear in the vid that you sew the cast on and bind off edges together. Thanks for watching! I hope you finished your hat!
How many stitches across the needles did you use and what size needles did you use?
hi. how many did you cast on? im farmilar with this stitch now ans i wanna male this as a hat!!!
Can you do this in a double knit ?
How many stitches do you need if you're using size 10 needles and less thick yarn?
How much stiches do you knit on the needle?
I think it was about 20 or 25. I'm not sure now, it's been so long. The real trick is to cast on as many stitches as you need inches, because the horizontal measurement (width) is the top-to-bottom length (say from the bottom of the ear to a couple inches past the crown of the head unless you're making a skullcap) and the vertical (length) is how many inches around the head you need (20"-22" is the average person's head, ymmv). So check your yarn/gauge/stitches per inch and go from there!
How many stitches needed for a twelve year old plz reply

I'm sorry you found the repetition annoying, but these are tutorial vids that focus on beginners and teaching, so repetition really is important, in my opinion. Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you found it somewhat helpful, if annoying!
This has so helped me thnx
