That the protection from EMP can be so affordably easy is a wonder to me. This has set a fire under me to readjust my thinking, and stop passively accepting failure. Tomorrow I will be setting up a cage for my electronics. I would do it tonight, but I am at work, and my shift doesn't end until 6am. Thanks again for waking me up.

I thought those old style round galvanized steel / metal trash cans / bins (they come in all different sizes) was a cheap Faraday cage, just put something inside so your electronics don't touch the metal. (In a survival situation those trash cans / bins that can actually hold water/ rain water catch would be useful in many ways anyway.) But I don't know if they are chemically coated with paint or protected where you would have to scrape the rim of the and and the bottom of the lid to guarantee a solid electrical connection?

After the EMP is over, at least you will have working devices. GMRS radios are extremely useful, but you have to be able to charge them (via solar or some sort of generator). Your smart phone is also a camera, word processor, calculator, etc. You can have an internal network, which is how the internet was created. At some point you will be able to connect with other people. The government will make sure that their networks are protected in their "continuity of government" bunkers, so if you last long long enough, you'll be able to make contact. Getting, learning to use, and protecting a bicycle generator, charge controller, inverter and some deep cycle batteries is also something to think about. If you can protect your car (with a Faraday cage car cover and maybe some sort of surge protector), it is also a 12V generator. The issue is that it needs gasoline. If some EMP happens, there will be many fried cars with gasoline in their tanks that could be syphoned out to run your car or generator. Lots to think about.

For the devices that charge off of grid power, get a small 100-200 watt inverter. Here in the US it would be a 12VDC to 120VAC inverter. Not very big, but you can hook it to a 12 volt battery or the solar panel and plug your devices into it. Don't forget to put it in the Faraday Cage!!

Any thoughts on a potential Third Wave of.... "C" ? I've made myself a half-mask with HEPA filter back pack. 3M mask, conduit pipes, airtight pipe couplings, systema sealing cake box with 2x HEPA filters siliconed into place; it's located inside a light backpack/rucksack. The exhaled air from the mask goes through a pipe downward and through a one way valve into a hip worn container that has an isopropyl / bleach mixture inside, before the air vents to atmosphere. I did consider UVC sterilisation for expelled air, but chose not to go that route, in order to avoid the high power requirements (and its limitations in a disaster environment) Pipe sizes and 2x HEPA filters where chosen for air flow, to make sure it was easy to breathe (no flow restrictions on normal and light load usage) and so could be worn comfortably for extended periods.

i think id rather keep my seals, for water protection, and put auminum foil, and/or aluminum/copper tape, on the outside, and seal the gap that way. I would also scrape off paint between lids/doors, and solder on connection wires between parts to make sure everything is one solid container.

I'm not an electrician, but depending on how the actual grounding in your house is realized, isn't it the case that the grounding part of the cable works as a very large antenna? Which, in case of an EMP, would be contraproductive. Does someone reading this comment know more?

One way of checking a faraday cage is to put a cellphone inside and call it, if the call goes through it doesn't work. But that doesn't mean it will work against a powerful emp.

That's why E-Z pass sends mylar bags, so that if you don't want your tag read for whatever reason, put it in the mylar. As far as EMP goes, I wouldn't know what would come after. Neither do most other people. What harm is there in protecting cards? None. Why would I protect my computer? Because it can still be used for many things, even if internet is down. • @moegardner1

I have heard that to test a microwave faraday cage, put your cell phone in it, then call it with another phone. If it rings, the cage is not working. Haven't tested it yet.

look, radio signals and cell signals are only a fraction of what you get from a powerful emp. we cannot try if the faraday cage is working, because we will never be able to recreate such a powerful emp that an asteroid or a nuclear b would produce. so you cannot test it out. in some cases you even need a double walled faraday cage. it really depends on how far you are from the epicenter of the emp
