They were originally used by farmers who worked in the fields to carry water. They weren’t glazed so the water slowly evaporating through kept it cool. They held them by putting their arms through (hence the cork top. It helped keep them cool and when they needed a drink it was right there!

Thank you very much. If it was not glazed, was it earthware or stoneware ? Very interesting indeed.

I've made donuts like this on the wheel... but they were only the size of a doughnut... This is a real eye opener.
This seems like it would make a pretty neat bong

Angela S how is that rude? Saying that would make a good bong? So that’s rude?
Try a different color. maybe a purple or lavender. IDK if I'd use it for tea or wine. It would be difficult to clean. Maybe just as an accent piece.

If you use it as a decanter you just rinse with water and a few drops of Dawn. Rinse with water until clear then lean it upside down and let air dry. If you're very worried about germs use a bleach water mix of 50/50 and run it through, after clearing out the Dawn,. Again rinse it clear and let air dry.

I agree with the purple color idea!
As a ceramic student, I love how animated and enthused you are with your thrown work. Always inspiring to see so much passion for ceramics! I can tell that I’ll learn a lot of great techniques from you. You’ve earned another subscriber!
it would make so much sense if he was a dad. he’s so energetic & kind.

He is! He has the cutest video of helping his 1 year old throw clay!
I would love one of these for my tea! This is wonderful! I've never seen anything like it. For Glaze, maybe you can take the term Doughnut literally and glaze it pink with ''sprinkles'' lol Or make it super classy and do a dark color with golden specks. *_*
You make such a complicated piece look so easy! I was never able to even make a decent cup because my hands couldn't stay still or anything. It's way more difficult than people think. Keep up the awesome work!
I like the clay ball feet better. I think it looks more creature like. I might try this and make the feet look like paws. Love the glaze on the finished piece those colors are awesome and the drips perfect. 🥰
Great idea! If I were going to use it for tea however I would attach a handle, otherwise the hot water may make it too hot to touch. 🌹

Or a leather cozy wrapped around part of sphere to protect your hands :)
This guy is the only potter who makes me want to be a potter
I like how clay patiently waits and allows you to work with it over a few days. Not at all like the do it all now before time runs out today projects
The puzzle mugs i learned to make years ago use very tiny donuts thrown on the wheel as the rim, then as the handle but you have to cut it for the handle part to attach. They are very cool!
They make nice little flasks too. I like throwing the outer wall second so it doesn't get in the way and the inter wall higher, it being easier to flair it out than the outer in. WOW that glaze is thick, looks good enough to eat. These are fun to make, nice job.
The timing! I'm doing this as my final project at school.
Love your energy and personality 🤦🏻♀️🌸!
You BEST believe I'm trying this out!
THAT WAS SO MUCH FUN!!! :))) Would it not be cool for to just have a separate base? Easy lift off for serving? I want one. :)

Cool idea! I foresee problems being top heavy and falling over though. Not that that can't be solved by making the base longer and maybe taller, to sort of cradle the doughnut shape
Georgeous piece.
So much energy. Amazing 💙💙
Pink and purple sunset glazing!!!
Woahhh there! Take the energy down like five levels.
Jon, Joel 🌌 has this technique that he uses to make his teapots with the lids fit so perfectly. Your teapot is AMAZINGLY gorgeous 🔥
This is amazing. I thought you would make 2 open half’s and then joining them. But this was so much better!
So beautiful.
Love that funky vessel 😊
I’m BRAND NEW to pottery but this is so inspiring!!!! A definite goal project. thank you for this!!!!
This teapot is the best think I saw today!
such a cheerful guy, loving his work
Its so amazing and creative
This is my first video of yours that I have watched, and you have me so pumped to start throwing again. Haven't thrown for a couple of years now since I finished college but I am currently on the search for an open studio in my area. This is going to be a goal project of mine after getting back into the swing of things! All I can say is thank you.
Maybe with a buttercream, lavender, red glaze. Since the clay is dark I think it will look really nice. Amazing work Jon! Love that teapot!🍵
Wow what an idea!!!!!
A great tea pot ever, I have seen
I started doing pottery this year in school and I didn’t know I would be top of all of the classes I can’t wait to have my own business with my wife !😁 I love these videos!

Such a gorgeous piece .. so creative 😍
that glaze on the first one is beautiful
thanks for the tutorial! well filmed and interesting project :)
i love your enthusiasm! keep it up!
This shape would be lovely for a tulip vase
I discovered your channel an hour ago, just watching the ASMR videos and now I'm watching one with your voice in it. And guess what? I love this and I'm subscribed. I can't wait to watch all of your videos while in quarantine
I love your energy in this video!!! I struggle with throwing but you make it seem so exciting...I am not inspired to throw once more!
Doughnut mug! That would be fun
I've seen them made into birdfeeders. So cool. Great instructional video and love the glaze and raw clay look. Keep doing what you're doing!
It looks great! 👍 I like the finished glaze colors of 1st 🍩 teapot!
You're an inspiration as I build my own pottery practice and channel. Thanks for all the great demonstrations, Jon!
You are so talented!! So gifted😍✨🕉💜
love these videos man. love them
Are you freaking kidding me?!!!?? I had no idea that could be done on the wheel. So freaking cool! Thank you for blowing my mind today. 👍🏼
Love this!!!
This is SOOO COOL! 😎
So good😍😍😍
Ohhh myyyy GOD!!!! I never knew it was that simple!!
I made that same thing but I made mine into a bird feeder. I'm planning on making more maybe into planters or like what you made. I love making them.
I liked your energy dude! U r blessed. Loved watching you making it so much fun.
I subscribed after watching this. I love how you give and put instructions in the vid
I wish I was good as you in making pottery stuff! I took a ceramics class back my senior year of high school and I sucked at it!! 😂 Love you and your videos!! ❤️
Absolutely unique! More practical for cold liquids vs. tea....ouch no handle. Your videos are fasinating. I like the glazes you choose.
Love your energy, positivity, and style of videos! Love the teapot too :-D
Amazing!!
so cool! I’d use it as a conversation piece. I’d love to see it in the black matte you tested a while back- maybe with some canyon sky?
It turned out sooo good
Love your videos and love your work!
In 18th century New England a ring flask was called a "Swtchel Ring" .Switchel was an oatmeal drink with rum used during harvest .. The ring had a jug neck added much like what you did and one or two tradtional handels .The swichel ring was thrown over the yoke on the oxen of horse that was plowing for easy use .All the best .. Guy
The lid is “a little suspect” 😂 I love you.
Super cool 👍👍
This is insane!!! So inspiring.
Way cool! Burgundy, reds, and purple glazes would be beautiful. And some buttercream. Always nice work Jon!
Awesome Jon! Looks like a fun project!
Amazing man! Awesome skills.
Love your videos!
That looks amazing keep doing good work
I am 100% going to make this
This was amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing! Do you mind sharing the glaze combo + clay body + firing cone you used on the pre-made teapot? It’s so lovely!
thanks..u are really great
I made weed pipes !!! Excited to make a flower vase thing, maybe. The pipes turned out awesome though!
Looks like it's wearing a sailor hat. Love it
Don't see that type of teapot made very often, I liked that you switched up the bottom and did a thrown base compared to the base shown in your first example.
ur so positive
That could be a pretty cool bong.
Love this thinking out of the box!
sorry, your amazing skill makes me jealous! great work ♥️
Amazing 👏🙀I think some etching on that vessel would look great and rainbow 🌈coloured glazing 😇 it'd look spectacular 😀
Amazing
I would love a thicker donut.. I love this but it feels like a cool modern circle more than a donut. I still think it would look great with donut sprinkles :) Beautiful work!
I really like your activities
I saw his other videos w/o much talking n I did not expect him to hv such a bubbly personality. But I love it!
succulent planter out of the donut shapes, I would absolutely buy one
This is beeautiful! I think a chestnut glaze would look really nice, or you could do a blue bubble glaze with no additional glazes to let some of the clay’s natural color/texture peek through on the exterior
