How to Make a DIY Zine (the old fashioned way)

This is a video tutorial about how to make a very DIY zine in the most traditional sense. I was inspired to create this because I wanted to encourage those who don't have access to expensive software, or even basic software or printers, that they can still create. The zine I create here is very basic, but is done as a cut and paste example. I show other zines in this video to show stronger examples. This video was created during the COVID-19 quarantine, so the materials I have on hand are minimal. This, however, is the important part I wanted to convey: you don't need much to create a DIY zine. You just need something to say.

for some reason i’m obsessed with the punk/ riot grrrl scene during the 90s but i’m only 14 so i wasn’t even alive to experience any of it :( it was really cool to see this video and make zines though

Honestly same, I watched a little youtube video about the riot grrrl movement, and got really inspired to start making zines. Also wasn't alive when that scene was around, being 20 years old lmao.

This was super helpful for me. I’m not skilled in using graphic design software, and I kept seeing people using that to make their zines. You showing your process made a lightbulb go off in my head. I feel even more excited to jump into zine making. Thank you!

1st, great hat... lol and yes, i've been making zines b4 even knowing it was a zine...i have kept my collections since 1991? or 92, hand drawn then some evolved to cut and paste, collage, then came the digital era...but then reverted back to handmade...zines, whether they suck or not, are great, and we are awesome for creating them. Cheers, maybe on your next video show more of your work!

Been into photography as a hobby for 5-6 years now. I've been making my own prints for the past year and have decided to start making zines. Layouts and most content will be done digitally and printed. I am also into fountain pens so I will be doing any writing on my master copies by hand. I'm just waiting for a better stapler and some bookbinding tape to come in the mail then I'm going to get started.

I don't have an income, but I'm lucky enough to have a computer, and since the physical supplies I have are what have been gifted to me, I've decided I'm going to make an ugly digital rough draft in Paint Dot Net, a free photoshot-like program, and then I'll make the master copy by hand so I don't waste anything drafting and changing up the format a ton with my limits supplies. This video made me want to work on it more, which is cool. All the other videos I've seen on zines make it seem so unattainable.

I love that you’re showing the old school methods. 😊 By the way, what was the name of that person you mentioned who did a call-to-arms about not putting out crappy zines? I can’t understand the name you’re saying there, and the transcript doesn’t seem to be correct (searched the name it presented and got nothing related )?

Aaron Cometbus was the author of "Call to Arms." It's hard to find online, but you can reach out to him and he'll send you a copy. You can find his USPS mailing address by searching for his zine "Cometbus." It's worth reading.
