How to Make a DIY Zine (the old fashioned way)
This is a video tutorial about how to make a very DIY zine in the most traditional sense. I was inspired to create this because I wanted to encourage those who don't have access to expensive software, or even basic software or printers, that they can still create. The zine I create here is very basic, but is done as a cut and paste example. I show other zines in this video to show stronger examples. This video was created during the COVID-19 quarantine, so the materials I have on hand are minimal. This, however, is the important part I wanted to convey: you don't need much to create a DIY zine. You just need something to say.

for some reason i’m obsessed with the punk/ riot grrrl scene during the 90s but i’m only 14 so i wasn’t even alive to experience any of it :( it was really cool to see this video and make zines though

Honestly same, I watched a little youtube video about the riot grrrl movement, and got really inspired to start making zines. Also wasn't alive when that scene was around, being 20 years old lmao.

You are my zine hero! I have been trying to find info on making a zine without using anything digital... I want to make them with my heart and hands. Thank you for making this video

what kinda zines ya making?
This was super helpful for me. I’m not skilled in using graphic design software, and I kept seeing people using that to make their zines. You showing your process made a lightbulb go off in my head. I feel even more excited to jump into zine making. Thank you!
1st, great hat... lol and yes, i've been making zines b4 even knowing it was a zine...i have kept my collections since 1991? or 92, hand drawn then some evolved to cut and paste, collage, then came the digital era...but then reverted back to handmade...zines, whether they suck or not, are great, and we are awesome for creating them. Cheers, maybe on your next video show more of your work!
Great old school way. Reminds me of the 80’s and the zine i did with friends.
I know you posted this years ago but I wanna say thank you! This was inspiring and helpful 😊 I've been planning some Zines and now I'm diving into the creating part. Also I really like your personality and excitement about Zines

Thank you so much! I appreciate your comment. I hope you make a meaningful zine.
Thanks for the video! Thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope you make more zine content.
Love this video, thank you for sharing. 🙂
Thank you so much for the detailed overview! I've got so much writing and nowhere to put it and I'm trying to use my quarantine to kick-start some projects. This video has been very helpful. Would love to see more about zines on your channel!
Been into photography as a hobby for 5-6 years now. I've been making my own prints for the past year and have decided to start making zines. Layouts and most content will be done digitally and printed. I am also into fountain pens so I will be doing any writing on my master copies by hand. I'm just waiting for a better stapler and some bookbinding tape to come in the mail then I'm going to get started.

Do you have any samples :) ?
I want to live in a room that looks like this! Ahhhhh beautiful. Thank you for this post on zines and the original way it’s done…. Awesome 👏 awesome 👏
I just discovered your channel. I remember a punk 'zine from Fairfax, VA 'Lumpy Head 'zine. Trade publication size seems to be the norm for 'zines; but not always.
Thanks gad for men. This was so damn helpful. I didn't know if I'd ever learn the basics I didn't need another person's artsiness in my face when I just needed the basics . ❤
Helpful man! Liked seeing how to make a more raw product. Subbing my man.
2yrs later and the algorythm gets it right 👍...just what I was looking for
I don't have an income, but I'm lucky enough to have a computer, and since the physical supplies I have are what have been gifted to me, I've decided I'm going to make an ugly digital rough draft in Paint Dot Net, a free photoshot-like program, and then I'll make the master copy by hand so I don't waste anything drafting and changing up the format a ton with my limits supplies. This video made me want to work on it more, which is cool. All the other videos I've seen on zines make it seem so unattainable.
Thank you for this post I am going to have to visit the Black Mountain Library zine stash I am inspired
Super helpful! Thank you!!!
Very cool. Thank you so much!!
Man. Your walls and ceiling look amazing.
Great video, thank you!

Very inspiring and timely for me. Thank you very much.
Thanks so much for this vid! I felt a little out of my depth with most other zine videos and I was aiming for something more DIY as well. This vid was super helpful in getting me started.
thank you :)
Being doing zines since the 80's, the old ways. And that's fine by me.
i reallyyy loved this video! i started making zines just recently, this makes me even more excited and inspired to make zines!
I appreciate your video, and your taste in hats
These are awesome, how do you bind the pages together
These zines are as old-fashioned as a delectable tray of old-fashioned croissants straight out the oven
Thank you so much. I don’t have the privilege of photoshop but I got a copier at work and some scissors and glue.
this is so interesting, thank you. do you sell your zines anywhere? i would love to see what you are up to now, thanks :)

Yes. Go to 309punkproject.org/merch. I write the zine "Mylxine". You can buy it there, or at fine bookstores in Pensacola and NYC.
Wish i could do colour zines man. Not even ny school has a colour printer 😭😭😭
I love that you’re showing the old school methods. 😊 By the way, what was the name of that person you mentioned who did a call-to-arms about not putting out crappy zines? I can’t understand the name you’re saying there, and the transcript doesn’t seem to be correct (searched the name it presented and got nothing related )?

Aaron Cometbus was the author of "Call to Arms." It's hard to find online, but you can reach out to him and he'll send you a copy. You can find his USPS mailing address by searching for his zine "Cometbus." It's worth reading.
