I agree with covering a bigger artist you're not necessarily into and making the song your own. But on the other spectrum, whenever I hit a brick wall while working on my latest album I would cover a song by a band that I'm influenced by and try do it EXACTLY like they did. This revealed a few tricks and I could apply them to one of my original songs. Bonus, I ended up with an excess of 6 or 7 solid cover versions and I could throw a different one or two of them into my live set to keep things interesting. I also recently put out a weird conceptual mixtape with those covers just to remind my small fanbase that I'm still around while into the 3rd or 4th year trying to complete my next album.

I had plateaued with singing and couldn't figure out how to get better, I was listening to everyone and trying to do it. Then I came across this one artist that made it all click and improved it by at least a good 50%. The singer is Mathew Bellamy of Muse, trying to emulate how he is getting his sounds is how I got there. Someone had said he always sang with a neutral position on his larynx, it wasn't raised and it wasn't lowered it was neutral and when he goes to that high falsetto he is still open throat singing. Knowing he had an open throat like most singers try to do, I understood why his vibrato is like it is. He is a good person to emulate for learning.

I can't believe there was so many references to older musicians and not modern contemporary pop musicians. I can't believe there was a Paul McCartney mention, who is who I'd like to emulate. I'm here because I want to cover OLD songs, not modern radio songs. And I love how it was exemplified how to take an older song and MAKE it your own, and sort of modernize it. The definition of cover song was explained perfectly -- to give someone a taste of what they know, but introduce your own brand as well. And segue them into your originals. Great video.

I think I'm on the wrong floor here, I want to do more of a remix of a song played in a movie. I'm not into popular art in general, some of the artists mentioned in this vid are like a complete mystery. I do mostly dark/moody electronic experiments but heavy on the percussion. Thanks for the video though.

Another great example of an artist varying their cover is Whitney Houston covering Steve Winwood's Higher Love. I love the contrast between the male and female voices. And while I still prefer the original, the quality and control of Whitney's vocal acrobatics are unmatched.

Hello! So for releasing with a mechanical license as a cover, do I have to use all the lyrics in a cover for the law’s intent of a mechanical license? The law says keep melody and arrangement similar and not to add or change lyrics...so, can I make a self-produced cover (similar arrangement) house track with me singing only minimal “hook” lyrics without the verse lyrics? There aren’t many sources for this (removing lyrics)? Any sources to support your answer? I am hoping to sing and produce a cover that fits the intent of the law but being minimalist for a deep house track. Can you help with the “R” a bit more in your COVER theory that confirms my approach fits with a mechanical license? Thanks!

Thanks, I was a cover artist for a living, for years, stopped 7 years ago, took up a day job, so I know a bunch of songs, started again last year, and spend way too much money on gear as I realized that I should'nt be wasting my talent, I also have a Diploma in Contemporary guitar, so this is truly great news, cool, I did think to myself though, that I don't really want to go and play in pubs and clubs for 4 hours a night again, as I now have a dayjob, so this will really be great, thereafter I can release my originals, only one thing, I am from South Africa, can I make use of these services ? Asking cause because besides the fact that it sucks living here the last couple of years, there is also other limitations and draw backs if your living in this beautiful, but terrible country, so give me some good news brother, and tell me that I can make use of these services too.

Hi, Several people asked whether it is legal to take somebody's song, change it a bit and release it as your own, as well as where you get a licence (mechanical licence), but nobody gives an answer. WHat is th euse of allowing comments, when there is no response? I guess knowing those answers would open a new world for many of your viewers. SO, please, take the time and touch on those few questions. Thanks

The advice in this video is great, but it is illegal to cover a song without permission from the artist, and if it is a popular song you risk that it will be deleted, and you will also run the risk of being sued on top, if the artist did not like your take. It is asinine, but it is the law.

I find it very hard to believe that you make more money on your cover songs than you pay for the annual mechanical licensing. There are 1,000s of covers of every song out there. How do you, some doofus in a woolen cap that you don't need to wear that no one has ever heard of make enough to cover the 12 bucks per song? Streaming services pay like 2 dollars for every 20,000 listens. Are you Rod Stewart in disguise? What the Flock are you talking about?
