You just found the best solution to our BBQ issue! We did some pretty big work around the house that required us to destroy our garden, so we can't invest on a BBQ this year. This seems like the best option! Thank youuuu
I did it!! Charcoals grey, today I did a pack of pre marinade chilli chicken skewers. This was my first barbecue in my house. I will do it every day till I am better at it. Then I'm going to get my cast iron grate. Thanks Chef John.

Excellent! You are such a great teacher! Thank you Chef John!
Chef, I love your recipes and more than the cooking your style of explanation. So kind of you. Many thanks.

Chef, you are so funny! I enjoy your videos and humor.
that is a great idea. some folks like gas grills and i do to but sometimes i really crave the charcoal grill taste and that is a quick and easy way to create a 'grill' out of stuff I already have around the house. thank you for the video!!!
I was looking for a DIY stove top grill, using those disposable aluminum baking trays and found this...I just LOVE this idea. My next best option...yeah!
If this guy had a tv show. I would watch every episode, maybe twice. Commentary is brilliant.

Ariyele Ressler Use firebricks in the cooker. Red bricks can cause injuries when trapped moisture steams.
Ash from charcoals and from hardwood ash, are a good source of potassium (potash) for your plants (about 3% P). As a very alkaline material, ash can also balance your soil pH if its becoming more acidic. You can also use charcoal / hardwood ash as a soap-making ingredient, or even as a basic soap on its own with water. :)
Simple, straight to the point..... And it works!
I love this video, I am returning the metal one i bought yesterday. This is the kind of stuff the Portuguese use and they have one in every house. Thank you chef!

If you want it to be more than "temporary" spend the money for fire rated bricks. They will hold up. General bricks will crack, flake, and eventually fall apart from the heating and cooling. Use general bricks to make it waist high, then use fire bricks to make the BBQ pit.

Oh yes!!! Priceless video - thanks for sharing Chef John!!
Both Idea of grill and narration throughout the video was good like it really very much ... 😊
Not too long ago (a couple of weeks ago), I cleared out my backyard from months of neglect and overgrown weeds. Now, I have space to try and make my own brick grill! Thanks for the inspiration, Chef John! (I admit though that I really would want to put in an outdoor, wood-fired brick oven for making authentic Neapolitan pizzas someday.) Btw, I don't think ash from burning a store-bought brand of charcoal is safe/ideal for your soil (much less for whatever you have growing there), especially when you consider that they can be chock-full of crazy chemicals/synthetic catalysts. However, if it's ash from burning "natural wood charcoal", then yeah, it should be okay.
Chef John you are my favourite 💯♥️🇬🇧
Very nice grill. The safety precautions were very helpful and need to be addressed. Great Job!
i actually tried this it works!

Wow, my husband and I are so going to have to do this. We haven't wanted to get a grill since it would likely go missing in our neighborhood, but we've missed grilling outdoors. This would be perfect for our needs. Thanks so much for sharing this idea! :D
You are an amazing teacher.
I love this thanks for sharing. And I really enjoy listening to your descriptions😊😊
Thanks chef John! I heat my house with a wood burning stove and have often thought it would be great to simply scoop out some glowing embers for a quick grilling. However I never attempted this because my thinking was to place the embers in my Weber kettle grill which I knew was too big to make the plan efficient. I could only scoop out so many embers and run them outside while still keeping the fire roaring inside. Now seeing this video I know my instant wood fired grill can become a reality very easily! I have an old pot to carry the hot embers, an old grill grate, and old bricks so I can be in business in 5 minutes. I cant believe I did not think of this myself, but then again I did think to watch your video, so I'm not totally stupid after all.
LOVE UR CHANNEL CHEERS MATE.
I have quite a bit of bricks, just haven't been motivated. Your method is simple and great, I'm doing this now! Thanks.
Just made one last week and it was great!
thank you! this is the best idea i've seen for a quick build diy grill! that said, does anyone have ideas for what i can do to avoid kneeling on the ground to cook a steak? like a way to make legs or set it on top of something without burning that thing?

You would need a lot more bricks, but after the first layer is put down you could keep layering until you have the height that you want and then follow his design.

Thanks to you Chef John again! I have been practising using your Brick Hibachi grill, even if I wasn't cooking. I have got the heat distribution physics right by now. Today I followed a recipe how to grill sardines Portuguese style ( with the heads on). I want to thank you from the depths of my heart for making this video. I have enjoyed what I probably wouldn't have enjoyed with an expensive kettle charcoal grill costing in excess of £200.00. Thank you once again.
one you've aced the base.... oh my! LOL
This is so perfect for our new apartment, which has a nice cement slab patio in the back. I have two questions if anyone can please help....1) Are those types of heavy grilltops easy to find? And 2) if you placed the floor of bricks down on the cement patio, do you think it would cause discoloration on the cement because of heat? Thanks!
Awesome! That's just handy. Love your videos John.
I love ur idea😊 Love from Pakistan
Lodge Hibachi Grill runs for $105 on Amazon right now (used to be around $80). With this idea, I can get the same results for much less. And this has a few added benefits; you can increase the height of the grill, it doesn't rust, no spare parts to buy in case you break something. Thanks!

Can I lay regular bricks on ground, THEN the fire bricks on top? I would like it a bit more higher. Thanks.
Beautifully simple.
That is such a great idea! Thank you!
It's a cool idea but you should really be using kiln-fired bricks. Normal bricks can mess your day up if they explode and sharp chips start flying everywhere.
Great for short people ;)
OMG YES I am doing this. Thank you!
This is so useful! I might make one for myself!
Oh, and remember to keep the bricks dry, if you use a wet brick for this, they'll either spit super hot shards at you or will just explode, this I say from experience!! :S

To be safer you can use fire bricks. They're a little harder to find and more expensive, but they're designed to withstand this kind of heat.
@bobg1685

EddyGurge To be honest, it's less an exploding brick and more of a cracking brick. Concrete bricks are more susceptible to cracking as they are made from wet cement and dried naturally. Red bricks, on the other hand, are fired during manufacturing, so there is less moisture present. Not saying that red bricks won't absorb moisture, just saying the moisture in these bricks is generally just wicked from the elements and not really trapped in the middle.

Good point. another oversight is that you never want to dump briquette ash in your garden (residual mineral spirits are not a friend to your plants) Lump charcoal ashes on the other hand are plant friendly.
