For some reason, it makes me feel better to realize that even James Wright will make cuts and then realize that somehow things didn't come out as originally planned :)

And I really love the vintage Sears level. Old enough to remember when woodworkers got most of their tools at Sears.
Brackets on the inside. Didn't think of that. Plus, sturdy dovetails holding the bottom up. Nice-ee, nice-ee.
I agree that simple design is key. Just because it goes fast dose'nt always mean it will fall apart. Nice job. I like my Katz Moses too.
Nice build. Thanks for building things and showing us how you do it. So many YT hosts who used to build things now only do tool reviews, or if they do build something, it is nothing more than a too commercial.

I agree 100%. I’m subscribed to a significant number of woodworking channels, covering a variety of topics. Of late I’ve started unsubscribing from many of the furniture “restoration/modification” ones. It seems to have become a requirement that these makers jump on the laser bandwagon. I actually got into a bit of a tiff with the producer of one of these channels when I dared to point out that positioning a sheet of plywood on the table of his laser, selecting a cutting pattern, pressing a button, and then removing the laser-cut pieces, does not qualify as woodworking. Happily, I can count on channels, like Wood by Wright, to give us useful and interesting information 👍🏼!
I’ve been buying some generic pure tung oil off Amazon and I really do love it. I don’t like the smell of boiled linseed oil on my hands, but the tung oil is kind of nice. I still use BLO when I do wax or shellac on top… really just because I want to finish it up. I’m the person who squeezes the last bit out of the toothpaste tube. I’ve never used homemade BLO, so I can’t compare the viscosity. It’s satisfying to me and I like the finish. It’s amazing on fretboards too. Smear on, wipe off, let it sit overnight. No greasiness, but it darkens up the rosewood a bit (and makes Pau Ferro and Indian Laurel look more rosewoody), and it lasts years. I’ve come to hate “fretboard oil” like I hate “Tung Oil.” It’s often acidic, has thinners, leaves it feeling gunky and/or doesn’t penetrate and last.
Neat Idea for hanging the shelf! I think I can use that to solve a problem in my shop. Thank you James!!
Carving tools elevated.
I love the simple design, and of course your skill at making dovetails, but if it were me, I'd go ahead and add the fasteners through the top to fix it to the brackets. My experience in thinking something would stay in place never went very well. But at least if quickly pulling a roll out of the shelf makes it crash to the floor ,at least they're protected by their rolls! Great job with the new shop!
Thanks for keeping in your mistakes! I've only used a cooling saw a couple times and snapped the blade every time. Someday old figure it out.

I found it helped me to orient the blade to cut on the pull stroke. I could feel how much force was being put on the saw better
LOVE the "P'Yander!"🤣😂♥️
I've got a forest of red oak around me, and am really enjoying the projects that you have been doing with your supply. Inspires me.
Well presented.
I enjoy watching the new tool wall projects.
Very nice build! I really appreciate your laid back vibe!
Looks like a good shelf to me. Always fun to see you cutting dovetails. 👍👍
John Wick 5..... The Wick Effect! After a light sand you'll be drawn in.... Yes..... I am ashamed of myself 😂
Need a few more carving gouges myself...
I have yet to try dovetails so all your examples help!
Great just what I need in my kitchen 🙂
looks like the shop is coming along!
My favorite bald woodworker
Really beautiful work, James! Amazing looking shelves! 😃 Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Great shots showing the mallet use. Made sense of the head angle/ergonomics for me.
Nice! I can't keep tools in rolls in my shop because mine is in a frequently damp basement and rolls trap humidity. I have to use racks and drawers and keep silica gel packs in the drawers.
Thanks James
Golly I sure get a kick out of your jokes and shirts. We would be friends.

enough people asked for it so I started making a monthly Dad joke shirt. If you want to get in one the first one here is the link. www.woodbywright.com/shop
Thanks James!
Well done. Simple and easy to build. Good for a variety of items. The shelf brackets make it easy to hang. Put it anywhere. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Hey James just so you know the title was spelled correctly, you might want to fix that
I like the shelf. I just might try to make something similar
I've been in the market for a new block plane and have been wondering if i should just get a rabbeting block plane instead of a standard one, and you might have just convinced me.... thanks for the video, mon frere!
Thanks for sharing.
Nice shelf! There, I commented. It’s down below. 😂
Nice project 👍
Comment down below Always enjoy watching your videos, even though i am more of a hybrid woodworker.
Beautiful. I can your side of it. LOL. Two for the price of one. I like it! But then the long haired colony says I'm cheap! LOL.
Thanks for sharing that!
Thanks
Nice
You didn't know it, but with each completed cut...I found myself blowing away the sawdust for you ...

More tools, more tools!!! 😂😂😂
The engineer in me died a little when you used your calipers as dividers.
I sure hope you reserved a prime spot on the upper shelf for a certain gnome who shall remain nameless. But, I have to admit, gnome on a shelf just doesn’t have quite the same ring to it…
Neat!
Havent finished watching yet, but since you cannot finds your dividers, you have the perfect excuse to make a video about making dividers, ala when life gives you lemons (or in this case, takes them away)

Did you HAVE to use gloves for that oil? strange! ❤
Nice video. I’ve enjoyed your channel and your casual approach. My question results from the end of the video when you showed your tool roll unrolled. I saw that you put the handles of the chisels in the pouch and had the sharp ends exposed. I’ve always done just the opposite to protect the sharp edges. Is there a correct way?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
Ай бұрын
There is no correct way but most people end up putting the handles in. Sometimes the blade will cut through the pocket over time. Then you have stabbing points sticking out. With the handle in the pocket the other handles stop the chisel from sliding out and on top of that you can see all the blades so you are not hunting for the one you want
Why is the bad boiled linseed oil allowed to touch the stalactites from your homemade BLO
👍😁
If the video where you make one of these is supposed to be here on KZread, the link to it is missing from the description of this video!

@@WoodByWrightHowTo no problem sir, i just watched the video about planes, i expected to see a couple of planes that can actually fly but all in all it was a fun video to watch. And i was wondering about about aluminium planes, i know their biggest benefit is how light they are but the problem with them is that their base wears off quite quickly due to how soft aluminium is, and i had the idea of just putting a thin stainless steel base on an aluminium plane, that will have the durability of a steel plane while still being as light an aluminium plane, do you think it's a good idea or just an overkill?
@WoodByWrightHowTo

they really don't wear out in the course of a lifetime or two. here is a video on them if you want to see more.

How does using the KM dovetail jig compare to using the RC shawn shim?

Do your future self a favor- make a full length horizontal mark on the wall on both top and bottom of the top and bottom shelves and date it. Then check back every year or so to see where those marks are and you are going to learn a bit about bracket/support placement. It's not much, but that gravity stuff is at work every second of every day. Having learned this lesson decades ago, I usually incorporate a back or rear stile feature that can assist with the support. This really begins to mean something when a client moves a cabinet from the wall to someplace flat and it rocks. Even though it was not designed to be off the wall- clients do stuff like that and then complain. Cool channel- thanks for the videos.
