How to Make a Beautiful Stall for Your Horse - Easier Stall Cleaning for You!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Want to know How to Make a Beautiful Stall for Your Horse while making it easier cleaning for you - and cheaper?
One of the chores I like the least about keeping my horses at home is cleaning the stalls. It takes a lot of time, and if you’re using shavings or straw for your horses bedding - you have to spend a lot of time sifting through the bedding, and you still end up with a lot of waste.
To me, this is so frustrating because wood shavings are not cheap!
And shavings don’t absorb urine, and the urine just soaks though, making a huge wet spot in the stall.
But I have found a really affordable option for bedding - which creates a super soft bed for my horse, and it is super SUPER easy to clean - wood pellets!
Pelletized animal bedding is such a great option if you have a horse that likes to move around its stall a lot. My horse Timon destroys his stall. And this mixes the manure in with the bedding - meaning no nice easy piles to pick out. And I have to spend extra time searching for each little piece of manure. But with the wood pellets, I simply add a little bit of water, and the pellets turn into super fine sawdust that is super soft and fluffy, making a wonderful deep bed for Timon to lie down in.
And there is also the cost savings. A bag of wood pellets cost $6 a bag where I live. And to fully bed down his stall, I use 5 bags. Then I only need to add a bag about once a week to replenish what I have removed.
Versus if I use shavings - I need to use 3 bags of shavings to bed his stall, and then repeat this process every week.
So lets look at it this way - 1 month of wood shavings vs 1 month of wood pellets:
Wood Pellets - 8 Bags for a month = $ 48
Wood Shavings - 15 bags for a month = $120
The savings are clear. And not only do the pellets help me save money, but they also save time when cleaning out a stall, and the compact size of the bags saves space. I call this a triple win!
I spend less time cleaning stalls, but my stalls are in great shape, leaving me more time to spend with my horses and not so much time cleaning up after them!
I challenge you to give the pelleted bedding a try, I think once you do - you will be wondering why you have been doing it the ‘traditional way’ for so long!
Happy Horsekeeping!

Mine are easy. I rent a field and have a run in. I've done some work to it so that I can make it into stalls or have it completely open. I don't use any bedding since they come and go as they please. It's rare for them to poop in the run in. What I do instead is clean the whole field once a week and spread the manure. I also do rotation grazing. It takes me about the same amount of time to do this as it would if I had them in stalls and needed to clean the stalls every day. If you want a cheaper alternative, see if there's any lumber mills in your area. Often times, you can get shavings or sawdust from them for cheap. If you go this route, just make sure that there's no walnut in the shavings since it can cause laminitis.

My horses eat the wood pellets! Ive tried them dry and watered down. The issues I had with them are bruised feet and impaction colic. I went back to shavings almost immediately. But I love the pellets for kitty litter.

I use the pellet bedding where I know they will pee & then having shavings on top of them.

I love these pellets! I tried using them for cat litter and my cats said no way. If my horse needs a stall in the winter for -300 F for the temp, wood pellets it is.

That looks like so much fun to pour the water in. I don’t know how I would want to stop pouring it in on the pellets that have not expanded.

You said 4 bags to cover the stall. Is it a 12x12 standard size stall? I heard somewhere that sawdust gets impacted between frog & sole of foot when used as stall bedding. How ling have you been using the pellets? Long enough to see if the expanded pellets are able to get into the crevices around the frog? I am seriously considering your tip here. We just paved our barn aisle & are now focused on scraping stall floor down to hard base & starting over with mats & some bedding. Thanks!

That looks really interesting. 🤔Do they try to eat the pellets ?? 🐎

Good question! I have never had a horse try to eat the bedding. But again by getting the pellets wet, they expand and are no longer pellets. And- they don’t smell like hay pellets, or grain, so that probably helps 😊

Hey Lisa! I was wondering how you liked your manure fork? Have been looking at them for awhile, but would love to hear how you like it.

How much do you love your Wave Fork?? Does it pick up the smallest pieces? Is it worth the $60 price tag? I am thinking of getting one.

I LOVE my wave fork! This thing is so cool - The tines are super strong and flexible. I really like that they don't bend (or break). And yes, they are pricey, but I think I got mine when they were a brand new concept (?) I can't even remember how long ago I bought it. But I have seen sometimes it's on sale, so I would keep an eye out for deals! 😁

I started using this bedding to combat mud in winter. I don't think it worked that well as it didn't absorb the mud water. I have some left so I will try it this way by adding water! Thanks, Lisa!

I have been so happy with time saved cleaning stalls, and saved so much money while giving horses a nice cozy bed 🥰 I hope you find they work better once they have been ‘fluffed’ 😌
