In my last video I talked about the benefits of using a 50/50 lye solution and why I use it. In this video I go over the process of how to batch out your own 50/50 lye solution using ice water and lye beads. This recipe makes one 32 oz bottle of lye solution but can be scaled for however much lye you need!
If you don't want to make your own, you can purchase a premade 50/50 lye solution from Makesy here: tinyurl.com/2p68z66r
Thanks for watching and supporting me along the way! If there's any way I can help you or answer any questions you have please email me at hello@thesoapgal.com 💙

    Thanks for your great video. How you use the master batched Lye could be explained well with a real example to help people relate this to their own formulas they are creating. I don’t work in ounces being in the UK, so I was easily confused. I have previously mastered batch a total of 1.5 litres before. It lasted about 1.5 months and stayed in great condition to use. If a recipe is asking for 100 grams of NaOH, I use 200g of the m/b Lye Solution as it is actually 100g Lye and 100g water mix. The rest of the water needed for the recipe, (say 100g as the total water required for the soap is 200g), I add the extra water to the Lye Solution when ready. Or add 100g milk to the soap batch instead. It makes soap making so much easier, more prepped for you process. x

    Thank you so much for the video! You really have a heart of gold! Could you let us know what type of plastic containers we should be looking for when storing the lyewater? Also I, like a few others, am still confused about how to use the 50/50 lyewater in a recipe. I believe, please tell me if I am wrong, that when making the lyewater you take your recipe and the amount of lye it calls for is what you match with water. Then when you make your recipe, add the amount of plain water you need to match your recipe. Is that right? Thank you again!!

  • @TheSoapGal

    @TheSoapGal

    Yes I can, I will also do a video in the future, but the easiest way to explain is the following: You need to know your water / lye ratio and lye discount for this example we are at a 4% lye discount(Suterfat) and we are using 2 parts water to lye ratio. So you are using 8oz lye 16 oz water total is 24 oz. For a 50/50 solution it is 8oz lye 8 oz water made ahead of time. When you make soap for this 5lb recipe you would use 16 oz of the 50/50 lye solution and add additional 8 oz of liquid (water, milk, veggie juice, aloe, ect. ). Hope this helps explains the process. If you need more help please ask.

    Thats kinda hard to tell without putting a small batch to test that and the only way to test that is to measure it in grams and record the weight just like you would do a bar of soap while it is curing. Unless she has actually done this she won't know the answer except just guessing. Good question though cause I've noticed my 50/50 batches have attracted moisture and has weakened over time and the only way I figure it out is my next batch is not quite right or just turns out too soft. I actually use bottles that the lye came in to make 50/50. It cuts out all the fumes but the drawback is attracting moisture. One thing she did not mention is that you cannot just pick up any old plastic jug and start mixing 50/50. There are different grades of plastic that cannot stand up to the heat and will melt. They sell airtight polypropylene bottles specifically for moisture control and it can take the heat. That really is the best way to store longterm. I wish I would have put back money a long time ago then I wouldn't need one now.

    FAQ: Can this be used in any type of oil solution? Yes, a 50-50 lye solution can generally be used in various types of oil solutions for soapmaking. The lye solution, also known as lye water or sodium hydroxide solution, is a key ingredient that reacts with oils to create soap through a process called saponification. Different oils have different properties and characteristics, so it's important to choose oils that align with your desired soap qualities. Some common oils used in soapmaking include olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, castor oil, and many others. Each oil contributes different qualities to the soap, such as hardness, lather, moisturizing properties, and more. When formulating your soap recipe, you'll typically determine the specific ratios and types of oils you want to use, and then calculate the amount of lye needed based on those ratios. The 50-50 lye solution can be used to saponify a wide range of oil combinations. However, it's important to note that different oils have different levels of fatty acids, which require varying amounts of lye for saponification. So, the specific amount of lye and water in your 50-50 solution will depend on the oils you're using. It's always recommended to consult a reliable soapmaking resource or a soap calculator to ensure accurate measurements and proportions for your specific recipe.

    @SudsNSkinNaturals Жыл бұрын

    Here's how you can make a 50-50 lye solution for soapmaking using ounces: 1. Put on safety goggles, gloves, and protective clothing for your safety. 2. Measure an equal amount, by weight, of lye and water. For a 50-50 solution, use an equal weight of lye and water. For example, 2 ounces of lye and 2 ounces of water. 3. Gradually add the lye to the water while stirring gently. Remember, always add the lye to the water, not the other way around. 4. Be cautious as the lye solution can become hot and emit fumes. Work in a well-ventilated area or consider wearing a mask if needed. 5. Stir the mixture until the lye is fully dissolved in the water. Initially, it may appear cloudy, but it should become clear with stirring. 6. Allow the lye solution to cool down to room temperature. This may take some time, so be patient and avoid rushing the process. Always handle lye carefully as it is caustic and can cause burns. Take necessary safety precautions and refer to reliable soapmaking resources or references for more detailed instructions tailored to your specific recipe.

    One hot and one cold was just to show 2 different ways to make a lye solution. If you make it cold(er), with ice, then 1) less poisonous gasses will form and 2) you have a shorter waiting time before being able to use the lye at room temperature. Joanna showed how to make lye beforehand (masterbatch) so that you always have lye at hand when you want to make soap and don't have to wait for it to have cooled down. Once she had made the 2 amounts, it doesn't matter to add them together because the purpose for the lye is to cool down: both will become at room temperature, and be used at room temperature to make soap.

    The best part about a strong lye solution is that you can add milks into the soap mixture without having to freeze it first. 🎉

    Really good to know. Just to clarify, you put the milk in the emulsified soap batch yes, before adding the Lye Solution, not pouring milk into the master batched pre made Lye? It’s good to be very clear.

    1. Prepare your safety gear: Put on safety goggles, gloves, and protective clothing to protect yourself from any potential harm. 2. Gather your ingredients: You'll need lye (sodium hydroxide) and water. Make sure you have accurate measurements for both. 3. Set up your workspace: Find a well-ventilated area with a sturdy table or surface to work on. Ensure you have access to a heat-resistant container for mixing. 4. Weigh the lye: Use a scale to measure the appropriate amount of lye according to your recipe. Let's say you want to make an 8-ounce solution, so you'll measure 4 ounces of lye. 5. Weigh the water: Similarly, measure an equal amount of water. In this case, it will also be 4 ounces. 6. Slowly add lye to water: With your safety gear on, slowly and carefully add the measured lye into the measured water. Stir gently as you add the lye to ensure it dissolves properly. Never pour water into lye, as it can cause a dangerous reaction. 7. Stir until fully dissolved: Continuously stir the mixture until the lye is completely dissolved in the water. This process may take a few minutes. The solution may initially appear cloudy, but it should become clear as you stir. 8. Allow cooling: Once the lye is fully dissolved, let the solution cool down to room temperature. You can leave it undisturbed for some time until it reaches the desired temperature. Remember, safety is of utmost importance when working with lye. Ensure proper ventilation, wear protective gear, and refer to trusted soapmaking resources for detailed instructions. If you're new to soapmaking, it's recommended to consult comprehensive tutorials or seek guidance from experienced soapmakers to ensure a successful and safe process.

    You have your 7 oz of sodium hydroxide and you have 14 ounces total water but you’re using only 7 ounces of that water for your 50/50 lye solution Water discount ratio - lye is dictated by the oils and water is dictated by other liquid ingredients and desired trace Full water is 3 parts water, 1 part lye. Everyone please use a soap calculator when formulating a soap recipe. Everyone measure their soap in different measurements. We have some makers use to ounces, while others use grams. But you need to really understand how to read and formulate a recipe using percentages to fully understand how the oils and lye work to make your soap. How to create a new formula too. If you copy a recipe (formula) from another soap maker IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO RUN THE FORMULA (RECIPE) THROUGH THE SOAP CALCULATOR. (Using caps to get your attention. I’m not yelling at anyone.) Because you can cause harm to anyone if your soap is lye heavy. Or if you put to much fragrance oils, essential oils in the soap formula (recipe). Weather it’s a small batch or a large batch. I was reminded recently never make a product while tired because you can make mistakes. Catch it if you can, or in my case it was a costly mistake because I didn’t measure correctly and could have hurt someone. I chose to throw it away and count it as an expensive loss. And I have been doing this for 24 years. Just passing along knowledge.
