You can always use a piece of copper wire and an open flame.. just heat up the copper wire sufficiently and then you can melt the solder..

Why does nobody explain what each of the pieces involved in the project actually bloody do - When did videos without an explanation become so commonplace on youtube? I understand WHAT IS INSIDE A SOLDERING IRON AND 15 VIDEOS HAVE EXPLAINED IT TO ME. What's the GRAPHITE FOR in pencil versions, what width of copper is optimal, where can you even find nichrome? What is the nichrome for? ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES TO GRAPHITE, COPPER & NICROME? I CAN NOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIGURE OUT HOW / WHY these three types of metal cause so much heat?

i doubt he understood whatever the fuck u said, but i think i did, copper is uncontested when it comes to electrical conduction (in metals), even in plumbing they utilise this conducive property to be able to quickly heat and shape the pipes, pretty sweet my brother

Continuing with what the other guy said, the ability for coper to heat up works thru the electrical tape and sheath. The sheath let's the copper heat more evenly. You could ditch the copper and go straight to a pencil lead if you want but results very slightly

Soldering iron out of a pencil: nice video, but it's pretty worthless without any written or verbal instructions. How is one to know exactly what materials are being used?

How NOT to look like you are cheating: Skip the switch entirely so that you do not need to solder anything. ;-) Without the switch, the iron will remain hot so make a solid stand to hold it at an angle with the tip higher than the wooden handle. Unplug promptly when the job is done. Problem solved, reputation maintained!
