Very nice little amplifier. I love the 2n3055 transistors they are tough little transistors. Remember to use a little heat conductive grease between transistor and heatsink next time to keep them cooler as they hate heat and can overheat very easily. Greetings from sunny Jamaica.

You could have used a copper clad or even perforated board for that. The Soldering joint would break if the project is exposed to long term vibrations(like if you install inside a subwoofer enclosure) ... Also i think that amplifier is maybe 40watts RMS or so because the transistors and heatsink is not sufficient for 100W RMS I've also built many mid powered amplifiers(100watts to 300watts).Hope you take my suggestions in a positive way.

it certainly has, but that sort of construction does work, i've done similar but different in the past for a quick lash up, plus 'point to point' chassis construction was used for many years in tvs and radios.. i've even done 'semi surface mount' using normal wire ended components with wires cut short on the copper side of a pcb with no 'through holes'

I agree that the heatsink is totally insufficient, but the 2 transistors will easily handle 100w RMS. They are rated at roughly 60v 15amps, so with a 4ohm load, they will only be running at around half capacity!

Soldering components like this in an audio amplifier may cause background noise because of the connection wires that act like antennas. Also, connecting the heatsink to ground is a good idea. Overall this is a pretty good circuit, well done :D

for the sake of thermal stability, there should be a .27Ω connected in series with the emitter of the high side 2N3055, and another connected to the collector of the low side 2N3055. As the transistors heat up, the bias current will increase, heating it up more, setting up a thermal runaway condition. Another thing that would help, is if the 1N4007 diodes can be thermally coupled to the heat sink. As the diodes heat up, their voltage drop decreases, to match the base-emitter voltage drop doing the same. That will give thermal compensation, allowing the lowest possible value for the emitter follower resistors, to give the maximum output power.(you might be able to use .15Ω resistors instead, if the diodes could be thermally coupled to the heatsink) You might consider a bootstrap circuit to bias the high side transistor darlington, to fully drive the high side, for maximum power. Using a pull up resistor to the positive supply means that the bias current goes down, as the amplitude increases. That means that the bias current is at a minimum, when the maximum bias current is needed. This amplifier doesn't have any negative feed back, so the output current is proportionate to input voltage, rather than the voltage ratio being maintained. this is a perfect guitar amplifier, and not quite as good for high fidelity reproduction. That's why the sound is a little thin, as well as limitations in the microphone used to record the sound.

How to make a "100 Watt" Amplifier using two 2N3055 devices. Three steps: 1) Read the datasheet and safe operating area (SOA) curve sets for a 2N3055. 2) Figure out how much DC voltage and current would be required to produce 100 Watts RMS of power into the speaker load you intend to drive. Note that I am not talking about peak, peak to peak power rather RMS (Root Mean Squared) power. 3) Ask yourself if it's solid engineering practice to be using two devices in such a fashion against the SOA curve sets and using the amplifier design you intend to use. Blow speakers, transistors, and fuses at your own risk and peril. You Tube is full of variations on these circuits and all I can say is they are entertaining in albeit a tragic comedy kind of way.

To get about 75 watts Sinus power into a 4 ohm Speaker you´ll Need a power supply delivering about plus and minus 30 Volts. nock about 10 Volts off that you´ll get about a 50 Volts to avoid clipping and excessive distortion a clean sinewave swing. Dont Forget the 2n3055 max ce voltage Rating is 60 Volts. Which is they wont last Long. Better to use a TIP 42 and a TIP 47 Darlington Transistors This config will give you way over 100 watts with a p.s of + - 40 Volts.

graham, you seem like you could help me with an old amplifier. it's a marantz intergrated amplifier pm-25. the transformer has blown and i would like to replace it. would you be able to help?

I dont know this amplifier. What part of the trafo is blown is it the thermal fuse or the mains winding? If it´s the mains winding burnt out, then only a new regplacement trafo is necessary. 30volt 0 30v sec winding rated at 2 or 3 amps, or better still get a direct replacement from a marantz dealer. One could short out the thermal fuse but not recomended.

I suggested "emitter follower" resistors on each of the output darlingtons, for the sake of temperature stability, and to mount the diodes on the heatsink, for thermal compensation. This amp, as shown, is subject to "thermal runaway".

@@Zebra_Paw At zero signal, you're right. but, at full amplitude or clip, the transistor that's off has to withstand full rail to rail voltage, because there is NO voltage across the transistor that's on. The transistors have to swing the full voltage of the power supply, even though, the load is referenced to the center tap, to produce an AC wave form.
