    It has been brought to my attention that I have given terrible advice for how to properly discharge a CRT. If you are attempting this project, please refer to the following video by Mike the Scrapper on how to do it safely: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJh1r8qqp7qop8o.html

    ...also its the fucking tube that acts as a HV capacitor, not the flyback transformer. Just sayin. And FFS do moar homework before posting a vijeo like this, how many kids watch this and just think it's ok to go poking about inside one of these like you did?!

    ClevelandStorms so if that makes all together 20 watts if you were to double or even triple on a few parts you could theoretically make one with the same size board and have it pushing out 60 watts no problem. correct?

    Yes, I'm definitely glad someone pointed this out to you. After being an electronic repair tech for around 40 years, I've seen others as well as been ''popped'' by this lead and/or the CRT when attempting to disconnect it myself. Although the newer TVs bled off that HV fairly well, they could still hold a charge. From experience I can tell you that this ''POP'' can be very painful. I won't even get into the old tube type TVs. Make sure that screwdriver is grounded before you attempt to take the cup & lead loose. A jumper with alligator clips works well. Also, it's good practice to do it with 1 hand. stick your other hand in your pocket while doing this. Other things that can really pop you are those electrolytic capacitors. Particularly those with a high capacitance rating (mfd or uf --microfarad amount). It's best to short the leads of these capacitors on the bottom of the board with a screwdriver as well. It's just better to be safe than hurting & almost afraid to continue with your project.

    Being an old TV repairman I can tell you it's the picture tube that holds the hi voltage charge, not the flyback cable when it's unattached. Ive used amps out of TV's like that before, but I just sawed out the circuit from the motherboard and used it as an already built amp circuit

This gives me inspiration.

    not all TV's will have a vertical audio OpAmp, depending upon the make and model of TV may have a dual in line package chip, a TDA2822 for instance. which is an 8 pin DIP package chip. All components to make the amplifier work WILL BE ON THE BOARD. But you will need to take a look at the datasheet as this video says to get an example circuit. Recycling from broken and unused electrical items is always fun. My whole channel is devoted to the same ethos. If you do some simple maths and some research about each of the components you can make some really useful things for absolutely no money whatsoever. GREAT VIDEO! KEEP EM COMING.

    Used the TDA2009A quite some years ago, and it is pretty reasonable in terms of sound quality, and also has some power. Even made an amplifier around it, that also used a LM1036 for volume, balance and tone control. It was capable of driving 4Ω loads with ease. Unfortunately, it is now obsolete.

    Nice scrap build. Nice to see a young person interested in electronics. Be careful what you advise about high voltage. you were wrong about the wire holding a charge ,it's the tube. Also before messing with the TV, use a hammer to crack the neck back by the pins. Just a gentle tap and you will hear the air rush in. That will eliminate the danger of the tube imploding and causing injury.

    The quoted 10 watts is only available at the high voltage and that is at 10% distortion in other words clipping. At 12 volts pre clipping you will be lucky to get 3 watts. At higher voltages you will also need a heat sink.

    It would be the same basic procedure. Look for the same type of chip he discusses, verify it with a google search, and pull it from the board. I wouldn't recommend using a blow torch, as he did, unless you're skilled with it. For beginners, a soldering iron and desolder wick does just fine, and is a lot safer.

    I pulled apart a speaker/power bank combo device because I lost the original charger and fried it trying to charge it. Pulled it apart and there was a huge lithium ion battery, two boards inside a plastic part and two flexible wires going to the speaker on the other end. I separated the two boards and one was the amplifier. Found the two power points and got it working. The amp seems to be happy at around 3 volts. I'm going to try 4.5 from batteries. I'm going to make an enclosure out of something. and use the battery and guts from a small power bank to make a new amp and power bank. Yeah I know it was a power bank originally.

If so how?

  • @MarkTillotson

    The screeching sound is the TDA2009A when connected to a high impedance input - it doesn't like it. Phones save power by switching off their audio output sections which leaves outputs floating at high impedance. Once the phone is pushing out a signal the TDA2009 will be stable.

    Just because he found the audio IC & it's associated components does not mean there may have been sections of additional circuits running through that area. Years ago, I had a Zenith Systems 3 TV that had plug in modules for different circuits. This TV developed an extremely loud, high pitched squeal from the speaker which the volume control had no affect on. It happened that the audio board also had the horizontal oscillator circuit on the same board. A component that isolated the circuits shorted out causing the frequency of the oscillator to become amplified to the extreme. It was so loud, it was annoying to people who lived across the street. Therefore, just because you think you've isolated all you need, do not take it for granted.

    Hi, you seem to know a thing or two about electronics and TVs in general, so maybe you can help me out (or anyone else who is reading this comment/question). Namely, I got a huge Sony KP-57WV700 rear projection TV from an elderly gentleman, who was getting ready to throw it away, and the TV was working fine for 8-9 months, before starting to show a lot of red discoloration. Anyway, I got another big Sony TV (even using the same remote from the previous one) SONY KDFE-60A20, and I would like to use the base of the KP as a DIY TV-stand for the KDFE, but also use/connect with audio cables (OUT from the new/ IN to the old) the audio amplifier and speakers form the older model (built into the wooden frame KDFE stand). The older SONY has superior sound quality! Is that possible? Can I somehow isolate only the audio amplifier, and still be able to turn the old TV on and use it only as a sound amplifier? I hope you are still reading the replies on your old(er) posts :) Cheers, Zoke

    Flyback or EHT transformers do not hold a charge it is the actual tube that acts as a capacitor and you can get a hefty shoch not from the wire that you pulled off but from where you pulled it off from.

    The giant capacitor in those things can be deadly as well. Even if there is a visible bleeder resistor, there may be no indication if that resistor is open (and therefore useless). Make sure the giant capacitor is really discharged and disconnected before handling it/anything, or it could be the last thing you touch.

    And trying to ground something against the glass tube isn't going to work - the graphite lining makes it look a bit metallic, but its still plain glass on the outside! And a standard electricians insulated screwdriver isn't rated for 22kV of a colour TV tube, only for typical mains.

    I take a pair of large tin snips...and cut around the entire amp area...and find the power wires in...they will usually be on the large caps, then usually the speaker wires, like on this video, will already have a connector on the board you just cut out...so find the audio inputs...and thats it..Look at the online info for the IC and find the sound inputs left and right...

    Nice little project! But a lot of work for a rather crappy chipamp... Crack open an old car stereo instead if you want to build something similar. For example, an LA4708N only require a few external components and will deliver plenty of power at 12 V.

    I'm very much into soldering, but that was like 10x faster. Quick burst of heat vs constant heat at 4 points to desolder.

    Can i salvage it amp chip from old crt monitor which doesn't have any speaker

    No it most likely will not have an amp chip if it does not have a speaker

  • @JosephAlukka

    That chip is like 2 bucks, not worth salvaging and then putting on a new board. If you really want an amp, dremel the audio amp section of the tv pcb out and use it as is.

    Removing the red wire from the tube is the best way to get a very strong shock from a TV. You should use a wire that has a probe on the end hook the wire to ground then use the broke to discharge the tube. There is enough voltage at a high enough amperage to stop your heart stored in the tube.

    If you were to place a 0.100uf cap on the output to ground you filter all unwanted sound. Basically you amp here is oscillating. Hence the nasty sound. Good work.

    It looks to be the same as the TDA2611, just made by a different company. Search TDA2611 on google images and you'll get a few diagrams.

    Put a ground clip on that screw driver and to the chassis then as you pop off the HV cap you will aso discharge the 2nd anode safely.

  • @gordonbrace2173
    @gordonbrace21736 жыл бұрын

    The charge is on the CRT anode itself

    Holy s*** dude! You are lucky you're still alive. You can easily be killed by the amount of amps you get shocked with from a television coil. Handing out this kind of Miss information is an absolute ridiculous liability.

    Learn the chassis numbering system 100's IF 400's vertical 500 Horizontal etc etc, If 200's is normally audio. so all parts in the 200 range will relate to audio parts. Also there this thing called a schematic which will show you just where each part connects. you probibly could have isolated and cut the board out and saved the rewiring chore. And I agree with t0nito, hurry up and build that amp so we can hear what your saying. Oh and for future safety reference the anode of the CRT holds can hols a charge up to 30000 volts. not the flyback transformer. discharge it, to the shield (wire) around the tube (ground).

  • @powersonic6255
    @powersonic62556 жыл бұрын

    The flyback transformer does not hold the charge , its the tube that holds the charge and this should be discharged to prevent a electric shock
