I wish I could use a machine but my Brother NQ575 manual says not to use anything less than a 30 wt thread. I assume only some machines can do this?

Hi Dawn - That is a very good question. While we do think you should follow the given instructions in your sewing machine manual, the 12wt thread is thicker than the 30wt. This may be the reason behind your sewing machine manual's recommendation. You may want to reach out to Brother (or where you purchased your machine) and ask them about sewing with a 12wt for short periods of time for decorative purposes. Hope this helps! -Michelle

Also use a denim or leather needle to thread thicker thread, keep your bobbin thread lightweight

I've read and heard advice on youtube that the weight of your bobbin thread should match that of your top thread. Is that not the case? It seems to me that the difference between 12 wt and 50 wt would be a lot. Also, do you know why thread spools don't usually have the weight imprinted on them? I've gotten confused while shopping. They simply state all purpose, or quilting, or button thread. I never see the weight. Any insight for me? Thanks!

Hi Linda! It is not uncommon to use a heavier weight in the top (12) and a lighter weight in the bottom (50). It is also not wrong to use the same weight in both. Slight adjustments to the machine's tension settings may be needed for either option. Most brands we carry, such as Sulky, have the weight stamped on the spool and many brands, like Aurifil, color-code the plastic part of the spool to distinguish between weights.
