    Lower weight, low sugar intake, lower blood pressure, do not take creatine, reduce protein intake before blood test, increase fiber intake, do a predominant whole food/plant based diet, do not take medicines which damage kidneys (NSADS), stop salt and alcohol intake, coffee or tea can help but can also hurt (2-3 cups a day is ok) but do moderate intake less is more, limit animal protein (red meat specifically).

    Hey guys, just want to let u know I had double nephrectomy and 2 days later living donor transplant, I’m 47. Thank you so much for what you do for people like me to live the best, healthiest ways possible with information you dedicated your lives to delivering. It will be awhile to recover and in a lot of pain but it will be worth it. Baylor in Dallas is top notch in what they do. Highly recommended them. Everyone has been supper sweet and amazing. I just had first office post op follow up after being discharged few days ago and they told me my sodium and protein was a little on low side from my labs. You know how weird it was to hear? After years of avoiding it like the plague, they need me to eat salt and protein 😂

    Thanks. I noticed you mentioned 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dL of creatinine as indicative of normal kidney function. Makes me feel better as I am consistently at about 0.7 mg/dL, sometime slightly lower, which my Labcorp results show as LOW, their ref range low cutoff being 0.76. 69 yo male on WHPB diet for last 11 years, only animal food being a little wild fish from time to time. eGFR runs in high 90s. BUN tends to run low, 6 to 8 mg/dL, suggesting low protein intake even though I know I'm eating enough.

    Different labs can have slightly different reference ranges for what is considered normal! Definitely compare your trends over time. We're happy to hear you're so on top of what you're eating and monitoring your labs!

    This was interesting. After a period of progress with my eGFR, it quite suddenly dropped back to 38. At the same time, my hemoglobin A1c was up to prediabetes level and my LDL was up too. I then remembered I had started eating cakes, cookies and ice cream again after a break! I have now decided to get a continuous glucose monitor to learn my reactions to what I eat and learn how to get my A1c down to 4.4 again. It should be enough to stop that nasty sugar habit. I see your video as a confirmation of my observations.

    Thank you for such informative program. My husband just start his first injection of Trulicity after his urine total protein jump from 18 to 87. Can he have coffee? he use to drink 2-3 cups of black coffee a day.

    All organs can repair them selves to certain point…the liver however will actually regrow its self if part is lost…there’s a difference between repair and regrow…

    So my creatinine level is 1.4, my doctor thinks thinks i may have kidney disease, i do bodybuilding, ive quit taking creatine and still at 1.4, so why would anytime i lift heavy it makes me dizzy and almost sick to my stomach? Is it because my muscle is being broken down during my workout ?. Also sometimes get shortness of breath, was told that could because of my kidneys as well, i could really use some info! Thanks!

    You should definitely follow up with doctor for further kidney disease testing. They can do a urinalysis to check for protein in the urine. Also, compare creatinine and eGFR over a 3-6 month period to see trends. People can get dizzy during exercise for several reasons, like over exertion or not breathing enough/properly.

    xylitol is a sugar alcohol. Sugar alcohols (others include erythritol and sorbitol) can cause stomach upset in some people. Xylitol in chewing gum generally doesn't since the gum is not swallowed.

    Himalayan pink salt is mostly comprised of sodium chloride just like table salt. So both contain high/similar amounts of sodium (550-600 mg per 1/4 teaspoon). Himalayan pink salt contains more minerals than table salt because it is not refined to have those minerals removed. However, on a lower sodium diet, the actual amount of minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium) that you get from pink salt is very low.

    Having a low egfr has really dampened my enthusiasm to go gym . What is the point if building muscle is just gunner raise my egfr even more

    We're sorry to hear about your low enthusiasm for going to the gym. We have a couple episodes on the importance of exercise and preserving muscle mass with CKD that you should definitely check out! Maintaining muscles mass as we age and especially with CKD is important because it is one of the biggest predicters of mortality. In this video, we were referring to people that are overweight/obese having excess weight putting more pressure on the kidneys.

    @@gal-8270 IMO, you should go to gym regularly, but do not load up protein to build up muscle or even just to maintain muscle mass, just eat enough according to the guideline for a typical person or slightly less to preserve kidney function.

    @@PlantBasedKidneyHealthI have a question about gym exercises like weightlifting, not cardio. When u have ckd, say stage 2 or 3 and ur skinny not overweight, should you still go lift weights at the gym to try to gain muscle mass and get bigger, or should you avoid weightlifting completely. Im already wfpb so doing the optimal thing for my health isnt going to be a problem, I just want to know if it is beneficial or hurtful to the kidneys to lift weights. Im also around 25 if that helps answer your question. Thanks for all you do!!!

    My creatine was 1.45 and egfr was 54 , after a week creatine was 1.27 and egfr was 67 , after 8 days now creatine is 1.1 and e gfr is 81 , i got kidney stones at urinary bladder, my CTs says Hydronephrosis, can any one guide , one dr says my one kudney is not functioning , he advise to remove stone by surgery in urinary tracks , kindly guide , qill my gfr and creatine improve if i do surgery , what is diff between surgery and laser procedure

    My creatinine is 0.99 compared to 1.16 when I was eating a lot of meat. I turned vegan almost a year ago and I definitely lower the number of times I used the restroom during the night, I don’t feel the urge to use the restroom every time. I was peeing almost every hour at work, now I go to 5 times a day. Now I drink no more than 3 liters of water a day but I I’m pretty sure I was drinking lot more than 4.5 litters every day, I counted it and I was amazed. My urine also started to smell a lot less when I turned vegan, less inflamed. I heard all the time carbs were really bad for kidneys and and blood glucose levels. Apparently eating rise and beans all day has regulated almost every lab test, even my liver has cleaned up as well as ferritin levels came down to 281 from 699. I cannot believed it

    I have a hard time not eating red meat. I've cut out drinking dairy (although I do eat Greek yogurt and cheese). I had chili for the first time since I found out I had CKD last week. If they could make a plant based product that taste like beef I would eat it. But what I have eatin is just plain nasty.

    We're sorry to hear you haven't found any good options! :/ The food blog It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken has a lot of great plant based recipes. You need to adjust the sodium because they are not all low sodium, but there are great tofu/tempeh recipes. There is a chili recipe as well!

    But why is the focus on creatinine as something which determines the kidney health so prominent when it’s simply not true? Do you want to convince me that someone who trains 5 days a week, has normal blood pressure, maintains healthy weight and looks muscular would have damaged kidneys due to higher creatinine? Many people do take creatine supplement and have high protein diet so it may be that their creatinine is higher, and yet I really do not think that this actually shows problems with their kidneys.. and not a single nephrologist seems to acknowledge that.

    We discuss that in our episode on creatine. Dr. Hashmi just says that if someone is taking creatine to stop taking it a few days before bloodwork so that it is not showing elevated creatinine making someone think they have CKD. Creatinine is a marker that we can use to assess estimated glomerular filtration rate and kidney disease. We also look at protein in the urine. Cystatin C is another test that can be used and is less impacted by muscle mass.

    You are correct. Resistance training is important with weight loss to maintain muscle mass. We have an episode on this!
