Apex Mountain School is back with another How-To Tech Tip: How to Lower a Climber From Above Using an Assisted Braking Device! Join Apex guide David, as he demonstrates two methods of lowering a climber from a device in ‘guide mode’.
David talks about the Ratchet Method and opening or redirecting the belay device. Both methods may be used to lower a climber short distances, such as when they have climbed up past a piece of gear or wish to be lowered to a rest stance.

    The redirect has to be a locking carabiner...

    A locking carabiner is obviously safer, but if you only have a non locking carabiner that is OK, its hanging in space and under tension, so unlikely to open.
