How to love yourself again: body dysmorphia & healing your insecurities with Sophia Esperanza

Thank you to Buffy for partnering with me on today’s episode. Use my code ELLEN for $20 off orders over $80. buffy.co
The insecurities of our own physical uniqueness holds us back to our full potential as human beings. Some spend hours a day trying to fix what they consider to be flaws, or frequently examine their appearance in a mirror and constantly compare their appearance with that of others. But your beauty is already within you. Our mind’s perception is a building block to our outlook in life. Body dysmorphia is often exacerbated through today’s societal norms of cosmetic and plastic surgery and even face filters that we now see all over social media. Sophia Esperanza and I unpack this topic while she shares her own body dysmorphia story and her decision to remove her implants, and leaving the modeling industry to pursue a different direction in life - using her large social media platform to inspire an ethical vegan lifestyle, slow fashion, and loving your body.
Sophia is an inspiration to so many online, who lives true to her convictions and speaks to a deeper level of consciousness, pondering and reflecting how the human species can evolve and grow, even in the age of social media pressures, illusions, and body dysmorphia.
In this episode we cover:
- Sophia’s body dysmorphia story
- What lead Sophia to leave the modeling industry and decide to remove her implants
- How body dysmorphia is exasperated with the rise in cosmetic/plastic surgery and face filters
- The importance of being yourself and not conforming to society’s unattainable and often singular ideal version of beauty that is all the same
- The argument to both sides of aisle with cosmetic/plastic surgery
- When someone has a prominent or strong feature
- How face filters online can be affecting our society today
- Sophia’s ethical vegan story
- How being a steward of the earth ties in to being a steward of your own body
- Using your dollars to support more ethical choices from organic plant foods and vegan clothing to ethical slow fashion
- Sophia’s new ventures with Elbows on the Table, a vegan recipe website
- how veganism has changed her life in the most positive way.

Thank you 🙏🏻 for having a podcast about this and with the wonderful Sophia ❤️. My whole life I have suffered with hating myself for not being as pretty as the girls in the magazines. In my day boys had nooo problem telling me and my friends to shave our legs or don’t smile because of your crooked teeth, you should lose 10lbs… I did all the things to fix my “flaws” just to be liked by a boy. While the whole time I was falling apart on the inside 💔. And I’m one of those people that uses those skin smoothing filters 😔. These past few days I’ve been going without them, and it’s liberating. Thank you 🙏🏻 both for all you do for this world 💚

I loved this talk! & I love that you are studying to become a naturopath. It makes me so sad to see people call naturopathic doctors “not real doctors”. Every doctor has their place! MDs are not taught the holistic perspective and the entire perspective of the body’s health. I love how naturopaths get to the root of the problem vs covering it up. I think you’ve been led on a great path.

Can you bring up conversations like sexual trauma? And childhood sexual trauma and what you’re doing to teach your kids the safety or pedo’s and the signs to look for. My mother never took us seriously and her ex husband abused me for 13 years and now I have no family speaking out.

It’s still so taboo and it’s not fair for it to be any longer for us survivors. It needs to talked about openly in families and with children. That’s how we start to fix these issues, talking about them.

I love her message of being a good steward of the earth, by working on yourself first and foremost, a real role model, embodying and embracing change, and spreading the love it fills to every aspect of life. That is something many of us who are on a similar path can relate to.

There’s actually been studies showing that humans have evolved to prefer certain features. An asymmetrical face is a good indicator of a person having good genes to pass on their offspring. There’s nothing wrong with people preferring a certain look. It’s how we’ve progressed over the millennia. Although I do agree that these face filters are getting out of hand. Even the most naturally beautiful person in the world could never look like that because it isn’t real.

  • @theellenfisherpodcast

There is definitely nothing wrong with preferring a certain look but this goes so much deeper than that and is missing the bigger picture. When we shrug off the obsession our culture has with looking symmetrically perfect by saying: it's how we've evolved to prefer certain features - we justify judging people by their appearance rather than their heart and character, and we accept body dysmorphia and extreme insecurities about the way we look as fine and "part of nature." It's essentially saying, "Sorry, not my problem you weren't born with genes that give you a big butt and boobs, small waste and a perfectly symmetrical face.." We are so much more than our appearance. And the way our species has such a huge emphasis on the way we look, especially in today's standards with social media, airbrushing, and the normalization of cosmetic and plastic surgery and face filters, we exacerbate the obsession and the problem. The beautiful thing about our species is that *we can evolve FURTHER* to appreciate was matters much more than appearance, which is our character.

@@theellenfisherpodcast Yes and I totally agree with that. I wasn’t trying to excuse the unhealthy side of things, so sorry if it came off that way. And while I do believe certain features have always been preferred over the centuries (we can see this through art) I do think the obsession and pressure has gotten way out of hand. There shouldn’t even be any pressure on anyone to look a certain way.

Ellen, I absolutely adore your podcast and I really do not mean to be a grammar nazi i’m so sorry, perhaps your wonderful sister Hannah can back me up here, you keep using “exasperate” which means to get excited instead of “exacerbate” which is escalating or dramatizing a situation which I believe is the word you mean to use! I love the podcast and these amazing conversations you’re having, I just want your articulation to reflect your incredible interview skills :))))
