In this video, I explain how you can live loop, without keyboard or mouse, in ableton with a midi controller. The MIDI controller that I use is the Arturia Minilab MK2 and I also explain how you can set up your minilab in ableton. The video of the looping part was not recorded properly, so you'll only hear the sound of the live looping from 06:34 onwards and not the right video footage.

@@MagpieMelodies that's great to know Magpie. I think, the general framework of how you'd approach a song to begin with, when trying to set it up for live looping is the core I guess. I think we have to 'listen to it differently' ? Or not ? To be able to set it up ? Just throwing out some half baked thoughts 😂

I’m a noob when it comes to this. Got my first ever midi controller yesterday. I created my account and downloaded all the software to my windows desktop without connecting the midi before downloading started (not sure if that makes a difference or not) I can open the software but I have no idea how to get to that screen you’re on. Great!!! Sorry I have a question: How your ableton switch to auto arm automatically when you switch between tracks? Because mine doesn't move when I do it.( I have keylab essential 61 and it doesn't have Arm button like yours)
@MagpieMelodies
2 жыл бұрын
HI Mehrad, I can think of two ways to do this: 1) You can use midi learn to select the 'arm' button for each track and assign it to a specific pad on the keylab essential. 2) Try to Enable Record Mode Automatically On Track Selection. This is an additional option of ableton, and it will force Ableton to arm the track that is selected. You can look up some tutorials on youtube for this setting. Hope this helps!

@@MagpieMelodies I'm so grateful! Thanks a lot ☺️🤍
I have connected everything accordingly but no sound is coming. And when shift+8 is selected I still can't use the knobs 8 & 16 to control the channels in ableton. Anyone know whats up? The control surface is set up EXACTLY as in the videos and/or all other videos I've seen. No sound when Minilab keyboard is played.
@MagpieMelodies

I always try updating it with the midi control centre. And, if you press a key and have enabled a midi instrument, do you see the volume of the track (bottom of screen) go up?
at the 2 minute mark, you move the knob to the side, so it cycles through your tracks. The record button lights up on each track. How did you set that up?
@MagpieMelodies

This is a beta-function of Ableton, called 'Arm on Selection'. You have to enable it yourself: www.reddit.com/r/ableton/comments/7uetmc/arm_on_selection_is_an_incredible_hidden_feature/

nice
When I try to Map the beat pads to arm the track it doesnt stay armed. I have to hold down the beat pad for the track to stay armed. Am I doing something wrong? Any tip would be appreciated

If you go to the MIDI-mapping menu, which channel, note/control and path is assigned to arm the track? In my case the notes range from G#1 to D2.

Hei Mate. Before mapping the pads to arm the tracks, don't forget to press Shift + Pad 8 (so you switch to proper mapping for Ableton Live). I had the same problem as you and this solved it.
Too bad the last part of video is inaudible and bottom image of the keyboard frozen.

Yeah, editing mistake :(
i got lost when all the three pads turned green, how you do that? only missing that
@MagpieMelodies
2 жыл бұрын
From 6:30 onwards, the minilab video is ahead of the ableton screen due to a editing mistake, so that why these pads turned green all of a sudden :) (green means that there is an active clip in the selected track, you can play the clip by pressing the pad).
My pads don't record, they only make noises. How do i fix that
@MagpieMelodies
3 жыл бұрын
make sure you are in the Ableton preset. If you press shift, one of the eight pads shoud light up. In order to start recording with the pads, you have to be in the eight preset. To shift to this preset press SHIFT + 8th pad
Where does the music come from at 7:00 ?
@MagpieMelodies

The video was not properly recorded from 7:00 onwards, so you can't see that I'm pressing buttons :)
2:35 it's impossible for me to start recording with the first pad (when I click it plays a note) and it never lights up green after recording, what can I do?
