Tl;dr: Starting point - Use diffusion to make light soft and flattering on the subject (these can also be made DIY) 1 - Flat lighting - the light is position frontal to the subject. Kind of like the on-camera flash (PROS: eliminates shadows and makes face look more beautiful/ CONS - flat light, lacks contrast, boring) 2 - 45 degree side light. Move light left or right to cast a bit of shadow on one part of the face. Adds dimensionality to face. Also called Rembrandt lighting. 3 - Split lighting. Light source is positioned 90 degrees from the front of the subject. This casts half the face in total shadow. Moody, dark, good for narrative. 4 - Top down. Light is positioned above the subject. Again, good for narrative and moody scenes. Something David Fincher uses a lot. 5 - Butterfly. Light is above subject but not top down. It's at an angle, to minimise eye shadow and to cast a butterfly shadow under the nose. Closer to beauty lighting without being completely flat. Do not forget that with any one of these positions you can add bounce. One light does not mean one light. Also, do not be discouraged about the Aputure costing $1K. If you are just starting out, you can create a cheap kit using fluorescent or even incandescent house lights. There are countless DIY light kit tutorials on KZread. Learn the principles, start shooting. Then, when you get more clients, you can start investing, because pro lights enable you to move quick and look professional. Just imagine trying to impress your client with houselights. Doesn't really work. But it gets the job done in the beginning for low budgets. Start shooting!

Great Videopost! first of all, i must say that i really enjoy watching your posts on this chanel. I learned a lot. I follow a bunch, but this is my favorite.I enjoy when you sometimes show expensive equipment that no normal hobbyshooter could ever buy. But i really love when you talk more about stuff that normal followers also can be able to buy and use. I bought the color correction and grading course, its outstanding. i can really recommend other people here to get that course. Since you are so good at teaching, i have some topics that i would like to see you cover more indepth in the future. How to get good exposure for different situations with flat profile, shoots that are ment to have post colorgrading. i know you did a post about exposure, but you showed equipment like the waveform screen, wich is a bit over my budget right now. Maybe you could show a good approach on how to use the zebras and the histogram for ex slog2? Also now since sony have released api for their apps in camera and now when they aloud mobile apps to connect and work as remote control, it have poped up apps as "field monitor" that do waveforms that can be connected to the sony cameras wireless. The problem is that sony dont aloud you to use the log profiles when connecting via wifi. I dont know if its because they want to protect their log format or something?Maybe there is a way of using wireless apps as waveform monitors and then make a custom profile in the camera that acts as the flat log files?I think these things are topics that sony shooters on a budget want to see. Since you are the master of things, i ask if its possible for you to do posts about these topics in the future.

Blast from the past baby!
This is a video with a lot of great information in it, thank you very much TravelFeels! Did I I get it well in that butterfly lighting is getting the light nearer to the subject compared to the other top/down technique you mentioned earlier? Also, how many times do you say "really" in this video? :D
Came back to a throwback for a big shoot tomorrow for a client. Thanks for the tips!
A channel where I like before watching.
Awesome tutorial brotha
Rembrandt lighting, (a great way to show off your "good side"..!)
Hey Matti, it would be great to see some Lighting tutorials for small places. For exemple, i usually shoot in a 4x4m room, with 2 tungsten lights. The composition is poor, Ive been having a hard time with the white wall and the lack of colors...Can you give tips on how to make this boring place look better, please?? If anyone have any tip as well, it would be great!
Great idea of a video! Thanks so much. By the way, I would love to see a video about taking thumbnail photos.... :)
nice tips...I watch all your videos...
Great stuff man! Lighting is so valuable so keep these tutorials coming! Thanks for the insight. What are the other smaller lights you use? Or is it three aputure 120s?

Your link fot BEST LIGHT doesn't work. Thanks for video )
I got myself a softbox kit with a 135w 5500k bulb, which I was told it is the most natural; the question is, should I turn off the room light (ceiling) and use only the softbox? if not, how should I adjust the softbox so both lights work best? thanks for your video, you have a knack for it!
Would you recommend the 120D over the LS 1S?
Great, u deserve more subs
Woooow, great tips! I really love it but I need buy a softbox and in Brazil it's soooo expensive. Could you give tips about make a creative light with a little LED?? 😂😂😂 Anyway, thank you so much for your excellent videos EVER!!!
In what i´m interessted in is the movement while filming. Especially how do you move while filming slowmotions or when u walk around something and make bit faster, then slow and faster again of this shot. Is there a difference when i can only film in 1080p because my little camera cant film in 4k. So i cant zoom in in postproduction. I´m new at this stuff and i will go on a 4 months around the world trip and i wanna make some travel videos, so i could need help :D
Use rembrandt. Take some white coloured material and stick it on the opp side of your main light. Light will bounce off the white surface lighting up your face perfectly. Best 1 light setup idea.
I'd love to learn more about what to do with lighting outside of a studio or at night
So, I don't have any lights yet and I'm about to shoot a film festival, I have to do like a couple of interviews and b- rolls, im considering aputure al-h198 for begging cause I don't have money for anything else at the moment, will it be okay? And should I put it 45' degrees in front of a subject which im interviewing?
Nice one, I just bought one led and was wondering how should I use only one light. In school we always use 3 or more ;)

How do I light the background like you did?
Thanks for the tips! But I feel like your music is uncomfortably loud relative to your voice.
Dont forget you can use that single light and bounce the light back off foam board. Its sooooo cheap and so easy to do.
👌👌👌🍺

Get outta my head!! I was thinking of this today while watching a video which looked like they were using just 1 light!
This is why I never use flash on my phone. It puts a straight on light to create flat lighting. It helps to have a friend hold his phone flashlight on the side to create another light instead.
Jays facial expression is creepy af in his lighting demos. Like Nightcrawler level creepy. It's a mixture of misunderstood autistic genius, David from Prometheus and back alley rapist. Really freaks me out.
