How To level Sunken CONCRETE STEPS | DIY

Ойын-сауық

DIY how to lift concrete steps. These steps started to sink due to the angle iron attached to the block failing. These steps are a hollow core precast. I prefer to use scissor or bottle jacks to lift the steps.

    This will work as a patch but what you really need here is a concrete slab to have those steps built upon, they’ll slowly just sink back into the dirt over time.

    Thanks! Not sure what you are working on but some basements have a kick out that the steps are built on, so the steps are the ceiling for the little extra storage in the basement. @@handylandlord I am going to have to hire this out. They are completely smooth and flat underneath with nothing to connect anything to. I trust a professional more than I do myself with these heavy stairs. There are about 8 stairs that are about 48 inches wide and they have dropped at least 18 inches.

    Any ideas for doing this with a staircase that's already sitting on concrete? I don't think I can dig underneath the staircase, I think I need to find a way to get under the staircase, on top of the concrete slab.

  • @handylandlord

    @handylandlord

    I have not. I would look for a gap between steps and concrete. This will tell u how they were installed. If u see a gap between bottom of steps and concrete, the first thing that comes to mind is attaching a piece of angle iron to the side of the steps then you would have a place to jack from. I would be a little concerned of jacking against the concrete slab causing it to crack. I would also look into what's causing concrete next to foundation to settle. Are gutters clear and flowing water away from foundation? I hope this helps and gives you some ideas.

    Outstanding, I’ve got an entire concrete staircase that’s settled towards the basement and water is leaking in. I’ve tried sealing the cracks with masonry caulking and patch. But it never lasts. I was thinking about pouring concrete on steps near wall to level out. I don’t know 🤷‍♂️

    This is great for a temporary fix. Over time (could be one year or five years) the stairs will be facing the same issue. This method does not address why the issue occurred in the first place, or how to prevent it from happening in the future.

  • @handylandlord

    @handylandlord

    4 ай бұрын

    True most of the time the issue involves trees, gutters or downspout issue getting water away from the house.

    If a lack of effective gutters is the problem, would putting decorative gravel/river rocks on either side of the stairs help stop the soil from eroding away? Rain and roof run off would slam on the rocks and gently seep underneath, hopefully disturbing the soil as little as possible. You at least wouldn't have rain divots on either side of your awning, and less dirt splashing up on to your house.

    I was wondering what you were going to put underneath it to hold it up. I've seen people use foam. Concrete seems like it might work but maybe both?

  • @handylandlord

    @handylandlord

    I used a few concrete blocks. This set of steps was originally held up by angle iron attached to the foundation. This failed after many years allowing the steps to settle.

    I'd go with concrete footings. There are a lot of people using GreatStuff expanding foam on slabs; however, I'm dubious about that. There are foam products engineered for lifting/supporting concrete. They don't balloon as fast and/or over expand. They stay liquid longer and penetrate into the substrate whereas the GreatStuff is made to fill empty space quickly but is not really intended for structural use. The specialty stuff is more epensive, but designed to be structural.
