Alan Watts delves into the concept of surrendering and releasing our attachment to outcomes. He emphasizes the importance of embracing the present moment and finding peace in accepting things as they are.
Watts discusses how our desire for control and our attachment to specific outcomes can lead to suffering and discontentment. He encourages us to let go of our need to constantly manipulate and control our lives, and instead, to trust in the natural flow of the universe. By surrendering our attachment to specific outcomes, we open ourselves up to a greater sense of peace, freedom, and harmony.
Throughout the video, Watts uses his characteristic wit and wisdom to illustrate his points. He shares anecdotes and metaphors that help us understand the power of letting go. He emphasizes that letting go doesn't mean giving up or being passive, but rather, it's about finding a balance between effort and surrender.
Who is Alan Watts?
Alan Watts was an incredible philosopher and speaker who had a unique way of exploring Eastern philosophy and spirituality. His captivating lectures and books have inspired countless people around the world.
Alan Watts was born in England in 1915 and developed a deep interest in Eastern philosophy from a young age. He studied Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism, and became a renowned interpreter of these philosophies for Western audiences. His ability to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western thought made him a popular figure in the counterculture movement of the 1960s.
One of the central themes in Watts' teachings was the concept of "the self." He explored the idea that our sense of self is an illusion, and that we are all interconnected with the universe. He encouraged people to embrace the present moment and find joy in the simple act of being alive.
Watts had a way of delivering profound insights with a sense of humor and playfulness. He believed that life should be approached with a sense of wonder and curiosity, and that we should not take ourselves too seriously. His lectures often included anecdotes, stories, and metaphors that helped illustrate his points in an engaging and relatable way.
In addition to his lectures, Watts wrote numerous books on topics such as Zen Buddhism, Taoism, and the nature of consciousness. Some of his most well-known works include "The Wisdom of Insecurity," "The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are," and "The Way of Zen."
Alan Watts passed away in 1973, but his teachings continue to resonate with people today. His ability to distill complex philosophical concepts into accessible and relatable ideas has made him a beloved figure in the world of spirituality and philosophy.

Interesting lecture, and full of great insights...with a salty helping of arrogance and condescension mixed in. I think someone who is enlightened would respect the beliefs of others, as their beliefs are their own. Mine are mine, yours are yours, theirs are theirs.

@@lynnfisher3037 I do listen..and speak when I am compelled to. A bit of constructive criticism doesn't harm reality. IMO, flashing the text of what Alan is actually saying everything half second is antithetical and doesn't mesh with the spirit of the message and reason behind the language of Alan Watts. Its superficial. I could see maybe running actual lines of context and maybe changing the scene periodically .. but constant flashing words? It almost feels offensive to me..

Yes, mister Watts drink lots of alcohol like you...the way of the Tao...... intellectual understanding is not experiential knowing....silence would have been your best option....
