Great video! I want to release my first Ep. I would like to put one cover song on it and release it to Spotify,youtube and whatever else with the goal of getting fans,critique, and even monetization. DistroKid seems like the easiest way. I heard about other methods like using Harry Fox etc. It just seems like so many steps. I just want to make sure this is the best method for us. Great video Autumn - I just have one question: At $12 a year license fee its going to take quite a few streams to break even on a cover, so if a song tanks and does not become profitable - if I were to withdraw/delete the song from my library, does the monthly fee cease automatically? Or do I have to also contact DistroKid in some additional way to stop the $1 a month payments?

Can you use an instrumental to a popular song, and record your vocal + mix it yourself?

This is an excellent explanation, thank you! I do have one question however: I recorded a cover of a Beatles song and in the songwriter/original artist credit section, I put down that The Beatles were the original artist. After a few days, I successfully got a cover song license through Distrokid, and hence the song was put on all streaming services. My question is, because I didn't write the songwriters' names (John Lennon, Paul McCartney), will this come back to me somehow?

That should be allowed! Yes! As long as it’s not a sample from the original song itself. Splice samples should be fine.

but i intend to release a 25 song covers album and if i’m being charged £25 a month i’ll end up spending £300 a year!! i don’t have that kind of money and i’m not even selling these songs i don’t have a credit card linked to my Distrokid

I don’t believe so, unless the original has explicit lyrics and you’re covering the “radio friendly” version of the song. I’d double check though to make sure!

As long as the beat is not directly the instrumental from a copyrighted or non royalty free song. For example if u buy an instrumental from someone who made it, that should be fine!

I don't think so you will now need a different licensed called a sync license which is much harder to get...however depending on KZread , you might just get a copyright claim and have to share any money made from the video or unable to monetize

I do believe that’s the case. $12 annually for the cover song takes care of all of the licenses needed and takes care of delivering any splits to the original artist.

Respectfully, that’s not what I said. Unlimited uploads are available for one annual fee for originals; not covers. Covers require you to obtain permission and licenses which I fully explain in the video how to easily do via DistroKid. Hope that helps.

yes. Ive never done this. But my advice would be first of all publish only covers you think will perform well. If you decide to go through with all of them, for year two leave only the ones that are performing ok, at least returning their maintenance costs.

no, they will deduct it each year with your subscription fee. You take out your earnings whenever you want.

When you say you cannot use acapella, why is that? Isn't that your own voice? I plan on singing with no instrumentals.
