as a native chinese,I can tell you we don't much care about your tones saying good or non as well as we also can understand what you say even without tones basically. I mean language as a tool for conversation, you just need to speak out and let your conversation object understand what you think, that's enough. It is important that you speak chinese fearlessly, then you get advanced.

    老實說,如果沒有上下文意判斷的情況下,聲調發音不標準的確會讓母語者聽不懂......聲調還是非常重要。以注音輸入法當作例子的話,你沒有輸入聲調,再怎麼打其他符號都無法形成單獨的字。

Honestly... I Love watching Chinese dramas. I watch them every single day with subtitles of course. I'm 57 yrs old and have fallen in love with the Mandarin language, I think it's beautiful. I was told by my 11yr old granddaughter that I should just learn the language so I could do other things while listening to the shows instead of staring at the television to read subtitles. I think it will be fun to learn. Thank you for your help. 😊

There are so many tips you mentioned that I highly agree and have been advised my students to do so. Good insights for me too, as I could get some ideas for helping my students and structuring my lessons better.

Wow this is such a comprehensive guideline for beginner Mandarin learners! Great job, Zoe! Just one thing that I really wanna point out - learning Mandarin tones and pronunciation by the romanized system Pinyin is definitely a longer process than the first one or two weeks. Actually there are quite a lot of challenging sounds that may take a while for learners to get the hang of, let alone the fact of Chinese being a tonal language. Forming good habits and training their ears and mouth muscles for Mandarin is crucial for anyone who has a long-term learning goal. Looking forward to seeing more videos on your channel👏

Once a time, I actually watched a Thai video on Thai got talent show (with subtitles ofc) At first I found their words sounded so strange, but after shadowing them just for fun, I found that this tonal language is very interesting and tones are not as hard as what people have stated. I mean I haven't even learned their formal way of how many tones or markings they have. This kind of shows a pair of ear is pretty necessary to get used to the sounds.

In brief: The video is a comprehensive guide on how to learn Mandarin Chinese effectively, focusing on various resources and strategies that can be used at different levels of proficiency. Here's a summary: 1. **Beginner Level (HSK1-2):** The video suggests starting with the HSK1-2 vocabulary list and using apps like Anki for flashcards. It also recommends using Du Chinese and The Chairman's Bao for reading practice, and HelloChinese for grammar and speaking practice. 2. **Intermediate Level (HSK3-4):** At this level, the video suggests using ChinesePod and MandarinBean for listening practice. These platforms offer podcasts discussing interesting topics about everyday life in China. For grammar, the video recommends focusing more on sentence structure and grammar rules. 3. **Upper Intermediate Level (HSK5):** The video recommends watching Chinese TV series and advanced news, as well as listening to advanced podcasts. It suggests shows like "Growing Pains" and "Friends" in Chinese, and a series called "Nothing But Thirty" for insights into Chinese society and youth life. It also recommends continuing to practice writing and vocabulary building. 4. **Advanced Level (HSK6):** At this level, immersion is key. The video suggests exploring Chinese content consumed by native speakers. It recommends a documentary about Chinese food called "A Bite of China", a debate show called "Qipashuo", and a talk show called "Tuōkǒuxiù Dàhuì". It also suggests using World Wide Radio to listen to various Chinese radio stations. The video emphasizes that learning Mandarin can be challenging, but with passion, discipline, and consistency, one can achieve remarkable results. It also provides a link to a Discord group where learners can access a PDF of the study plan and a full list of resources.

Thank you so much for this video. Last year, after getting my English certification, I decided it would be fun to learn Chinese. However, unlike my English journey, I didn't have anyone to communicate with while learning Chinese, but I always had fun memorizing vocabulary and learning where each character came from. Two weeks ago, when I was traveling in Slovenia, a Chinese man approached me and asked for directions. I was surprised by the fact that I was able to hold a small conversation with him, and that motivated me to start learning more seriously. It's my first time self-learning a language, so I'm really glad I got to see such a marvelous guide at the "beginning" (let's say I'm starting from scratch) of my journey

Thank you Zoe, for this excellent video. I found your channel after watching your equivalent videos helping Chinese native speakers with language learning (and subsequently finding your bilibili channel with other great content!). Videos from your Chinese channel is actually study material for me! As a Chinese language learner, I have spent around four years of daily study (working up to several hours each day) using the techniques very similar to what you describe in your one of your Chinese language video. As a non native speaker, one clarification I feel is important to share with other learners is that at the existing HSK6 level, despite its designation as advanced, it is really far, far away from fluency. In the new HSK system, this level is classified as upper intermediate, which I agree with. The total vocabulary of 5000 words is just far too small to understand a wide range of topics. I have studied over 13000 words and idioms and can honestly say that I frequently still encounter words I have never seen (although in many situations, I can guess) and can say confidently some of the shows you recommend are likely to be a challenge for even people that can pass HSK6 easily. I have tried watching the comedy show you recommend, and can say that still confounds me, and have put it off because it is simply too difficult. I find many Chinese language learners grossly underestimate the amount of work needed to achieve fluency. I am by no means trying to discourage people, but just set realistic expectations. The existing HSK system really gives learners a false impression of what is really needed to be considered advanced, let alone fluent. This is why I agree the most important part to achieving success is consistency and cultivating a strong learning habit that keeps you motivated. Thank you for your videos, and keep up the great work!

I can thank You Tube's algorithm for leading me to the right place, judging by the number of views this video has received in just a few days. The main problem with any language learning these days is not the lack of resources, but simply information overload. Everyone has their own resources, their own plans, their own teaching ideas. "Explain this to me like I am an 8 year old" is exactly right. I need structure to try to learn Mandarin. I'm an algorithmic thinker. I prefer step-by-step instructions. It's hard to digest all of the information when there are just so many different teaching ideas out there. Also, it's easy to say "just do what works for you" except that I don't know what will work for me. I've never done this before. A comprehensive, structured plan is what I need else I'll just wander around aimlessly trying different things with no idea if they will be helpful or not.

Thanks for the excellent resource suggestions! I also like John Wang's videos on the Espresso Chinese KZread channel where he covers the HSK books 1-3. He's very entertaining to watch! He also covers the Integrated Chinese textbooks for anyone using those to study. I find it so much easier to learn from a textbook when I have an instructor to go over each chapter with native pronunciation.

For sure having the chance to go to China and live there, immersed in the language, is a big booster to language learning. But I'm 100% confident that any student who follows the guidelines outlined in this video will get some great results. i have only been learning chinese for 2 weeks thanks to duolingo, i had planned not to study handwriting in hanzi but i totally agree with you, if you write them sooner or later your brain will get used to recognozing them and also radicals will start to make sense which i had noticed but had no idea how to study i plan on learning chinese just for fun, i'm already trilingual (spanish, portuguese, english) and i noticed that i havent learned a language in 5 years so i am up to the challenge! even though a lot of foreigners as you said try to scare you into thinking chinese is hard i find grammar very easy to understand, i only find pronunciation and learning new hanzis hard. i think this video is perfect for a zero to hero roadmap in chinese and i will absorb all of your advice for maximum slowly but surely learning. 谢谢你!φ(゜▽゜*)♪
