This video got me to start French in Action back in March, but I took a several months long hiatus from it until picking it up again recently and finishing it. Because of it, I now feel like I am at a decent level in French and can understand so much when I watch videos in French. I will continue on my path to fluency, but this video kickstarted the French journey for me. Thanks for introducing me to it! P.S. I plan on learning Latin next ;)

It's great, it was my first try at a 3rd language back in the late '80s was on air on PBS. I really liked the fact that there were no translations they showed the action and the words associated and you start understanding right away obviously takes practice to actually start speaking there is a companion workbook. Just recently watching some French videos came across one that had the fountain they showed very often on the show with the mechanical lips and other stuff, apparently, it's still standing.

Me, also learned French using French in Action. I recall the first days when I just arrived in Paris, I'd spend hours in Bibliotheque Pompidou listening to these videos. Just like Mireille, I ended up spending 4 years to study Art History at Sorbonne in later years. A lot of sweet memories and nostalgia of 80s from this series that one unfortunately wouldn't be able to find in today's France. What's nice about French in Action, as many fans rightfully pointed out, is the characters. It feels like a TV series in which these amazing characters would interact and grow with you as you improve your French level.

Dia dhuit, Luke! Well, what a treat it has been to discover your KZread channel in the past few days. I'm someone whose been really struggling with language learning motivation the past 2 years, and so to encounter your enthusiasm has been most inspiring, perhaps even putting me back on the straight and narrow (or so I hope). I guess when I returned from France after a period there, I became quite deflated in not having the same access to native French speakers as I did (including those with no English that forced me into French), which was amplified further by my inability to convince French speakers on iTalki to chat with me (do others have this experience?). I'm going to give this video series a go, I've a lot to catch up on, and your review sounds encouraging. PS I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Irish language. It would be very exiting to learn what a fluent Latin speaker would make of this Celtic language. Apparently the Italic and Celtic families are more closely related? You'd be a good judge. Best regards :)

Bonjour Luke; as a teacher here in France - of French to the English and English to the French - I found the video series of interest of course - maybe of most use for isolated students. However in my classes I tend to follow the methods of Michel Thomas, literally translating his French classes in to English for my french students who range from 16 to 70! I agree that immersion only in the learnt language (with from time to time a brief word of guidance in the native tongue) is the method that appears to produce the most lasting results - and lots of revision !

We got French in Action on our PBS station in 1987-88. It aired every Sunday evening for a year. Even back then as I high school Freshman, I was confused, but I had a huge crush on Mireille. Last year, I started learning French and I use many tools. Duolingo, a French reader, Chez Mimi and Extra (two shows from Channel 4 in England) and French in Action. With a little French knowledge after using several of my learning aides, I can actually understand what is being said on French in Action and what Capretz is getting at when he is teaching his class (even the student who insists on calling the female in their story 'Ethel' LOL). It's pretty cool. I can say a few things in French and also speak in franglais.

"French in Action" was a pioneer in language instruction that was replicated with other languages e.g. Prego! The idea of a central storyline as the point of departure was revolutionary. So rather than "At the Supermarket", "Going to the Post Office", etc. which are the standard unit topics in any language course, these subjects were linked to the needs and lives of the main characters. I actually taught "French in Action" as a grad student, and adapted all my future teaching in Spanish and ESL along those same guidelines.

I agree. French in Action is one of the main reasons that I speak French very well as an English speaker. Sure, dedication and interest in learning the language, along with the fact I was a teenager and spoke descent Spanish, were even bigger reasons, but I do believe that French in Action was what propelled my interest and dedication in the first place. This is because French in Action allowed me to, without being in France or some other French-speaking place, hear French as spoken by natives and to learn it in an immersive way, since the entire series teaches French exclusively in French, just like a toddler for example would learn a language. It's old as heck now, the cars and how the people dress appear so outdated now, and some (not all) of the slang or expressions are also outdated, but I would still recommend it because it's incredibly effective, when combined with formal textbook type lessons. Just use it as a supplement to high school or undergrad level French classes, or even at-home courses, and be persistent with watching all the series, one at a time, repeating them at least once. The plot makes it very enjoyable. Plus the main actors are attractive, and the supporting actors are also enjoyable to watch.
