This is definitely a video we must have made haha. This video motivates us to even work harder to not only make these courses available as audiobooks but also improve them and increase the number languages for which such books are available! Grātiās tibi for bringing invaluable recognition to many other KZread channels. (Those who wonder if there are books similar to Jensen's in more languages see the end of the video: yes there are the ones for German and Spanish and we are currently planning to write similar readers for Turkish and Persian.)

Thank you for showing us these resources Luke! I took four years of Latin in high school, but now, as a freshman in college, I’m struggling to preserve my knowledge outside of a formal classroom. I’ve been reading Ovid’s Metamorphoses, writing letters to my brother (a Benedictine monk) in Latin, and (especially) listening to your videos! But having resources like Familia Romana will be very helpful in actually improving my skill. So thank you!

I had been using Jensen's Italian book in the pdf form off and on for over a yr and recently discovered Ayan Academy's videos here on KZread (currently on ch 7). I immediately thought of Luke bc he'd also made a similar video that I'd watched/heard. I feel the Jensen book HAS helped me but can't say how much really. I've been using other resources as well. Was so happy to see Ayan made videos of similar books in different languages. I'm at a much higher level in Span than Italian & curious to see if this 'book in video form' can help me improve my vocabulary. And I'll use these videos when i get around to studying Ger & French again (currently not actively studying).

As always it is great to hear your thoughts about language learning! I've just started learning Italian with input-based methods, and I've been really enjoying listening to Ayan Academy's audiobook of Italian by the Nature Method. I like to listen to each chapter at least twice, and inevitably on the second listening I pick up more and more things I didn't notice on the first listening. My Latin is definitely carrying me a lot though, hahaha. I tried to get my normie family to listen to Italian by the Nature method and they made it about 6 minutes into chapter 1 before saying the story was too boring (my mother learned Italian to a moderate level years ago, and my husband is just starting out with me). It's not boring for me though, but maybe since 2 family members both didn't gel with it, I might be the outlier here, being a language teacher. I have an inherent intrest in discovering language, and I find reading the Nature Method really fascinating, whereas my mother and husband (both with an engineering background) found it dull. Personally, I've been having a lot of success with alternating listening to chapters of the Nature Method with freely choosing Italian content on KZread that interests me. A favourite is the episode about Dante Alghieri by Davide on Podcast Italiano. When I mix in content from outside, I see the words that I've learned in the Nature Method pop up a lot in the other materials, and it gives me a lot of satisfaction to recognise those same words used in spontaneous Italian speech. I also look forward to learning from the 'Easy Italian Reader' and Ollie Richard's 'Italian Short Stories'! Thanks again for the lovely insights into ways we can naturally and joyfully improve our language learning!

17:22 I was just translating what was on this page into Spanish in my head... "pero tú no sabes jugar cartas!" "No, pero tú me lo puedes enseñar!" "Un día te enseñaremos a jugar cartas!" Something that I find interesting is how there is very little gemination in Spanish, whereas in Italian gemination is very common. Anyway, if I want to learn Italian I should probably think these sentences in Italian rather than translating to Spanish (which is my first language).

Luke, are you familiar with Olle Kjellin's chorusing method of learning the intonation of a language? He is a Swedish doctor, a speech pathologist and a polyglot. He makes a fairly extensive and, as far as I can tell, convincing argument for why it should work. He also backs it up with his professional experience. He doesn't try to sell you anything, the articles are freely available, so it makes it believable. The method is kind of tedious and, I guess for this reason, not very popular. But knowing your style of learning, I thought you might like it. I don't have any personal experience with it to share, as I stumbled upon it only very recently. But given how notoriously difficult intonation is, I think it's interesting.

Having live in Italy and studied there, I have noted that Italian can be delivered in different registers. So much depends on the register, and this can subtly or dramatically change the significance of what is being said. For example, the simple phrase "ma come?", depending on register can range from a simple (unloaded) question to an accusation of gross negligence.

I love to hear an American teacher sound the t in Latin, as we do in the UK. Wonderful. And also other t sounds instead of the usual American d. I feel the t ought to be sounded as it is a written consonant.

  • @polyMATHY_Luke

That’s absolutely ridiculous. First of all, all Americans will make the intervocalic T sound quite clear when wishing to be emphatic (that is: I’m not unique). Secondly, the lenition of the intervocalic T in American English is, according to your metric, much better than what most Brits actually do, which is to change the sound into a glottal stop. In reality, none of these are bad pronunciations, but are all legitimate varieties of natively spoken English. You should be familiar with all of them.

You are absolutely right about the glottal stop diphthong of the t here in the UK, although it is far from universal. Good RP English does not use it at all. Luke, I wanna ask you something completely unrelated to this video, but which maybe could eventually inspire a video of its own. How come letter C, which in Latin always maps to sound /k/, ended up forking into 2 phonemes in ALL major romance languages, and adopting a non-k phoneme precisely before vowels e and i? This coordination is for sure not a coincidence. Thanks for your awesome work!

I just don't recommed using Busuu for Japanese. From my experience it's only helpful about the very first basic parts, after which it'll just repeat the same stuff, only adding few new words. Exercises will also be inconsistent after you've got through the solid part : whilst some ones will be uselessly easy, the listening ones will suddenly become hard in a way the learner wasn't preparared to.

Only Spanish speakers in North America are black/brown. The Spanish speakers in Europe, barring those with foreign ancestry are almost all white. Mexicans no longer look white because the Spanish settlers there mixed with the Native Americans, so in a way, all Latinos are mixed race. And of course French and Italians are mostly white. They live in Europe. And you know, you should really stop thinking about foreign languages only in terms of racial ancestry. It is really weird to see someone think of languages as black and white.

Great video and it is timely that I found it today. I saw some posts about AyanAcademy on reddit but it sounded like they were brand new (at the time of the reddit post) so I was unsure. How could I be sure that the pronunciation I was getting from them would be accurate and reliable? Since I failed out of French in high school, 50 years ago, because my mouth just didn't want to make the contortions necessary to speak it, I sure didn't want to get off on the wrong track trying again to learn French in my old age. My research didn't really find anything, negative or positive, about Ayan until I stumbled on this video. Not only does the positive feedback on them come from a trusted source, you also explain that their audio tracks are from native speakers. I'm confident now that I will have every chance of success in French using the method on Ayan Academy and any failure will be my own fault. But I have one question that I'd love to hear from you about. I'm also doing the Ranieri-Dowling method, still writing Wheelock tables. When I'm done with the writing and dive fully into the Lingua Latina books, does it make sense to study Latin, or any language for that matter, using Busuu or other multiple methods at the same time or should a person stick to one method of study for one language, especially in the early days? I don't want to get too distracted but I also don't want to miss learning chances. What do you think?
