Isnt the gap on the overhang for the sheathing?

What if I want to make a 3’ overhang. The Jack rafters will be nailed to the hip rafter but it won’t be supported by the framing plate. Won’t that make the roof weak?

You would need to mark 5/17 3 times. the video he marks 5/17 6 times when it only takes 4 times to go from the wall plate to the ridge so his overhang is 2 feet.I always lay my tail out and make the height above the plate (how much board that is left measuring plumb out of the seat cut) the same as my other rafters then measure from plate to ridge instead of laying it out with the square

Can you not just use the step off method using 16.97 instead to avoid the gap ? If you reduce the seat cut on the hip by half the thickness does this give you the hip drop cut ? thanks for the great tips mate !

Yes, but it will be difficult to do since it's about 1/32 of an inch.

What if it’s 8’4” span? How do you mark the 4’2” on the square when stepping off?

Forgive me for asking a silly question. I was looking through your videos and could not find anything on a tandem garage. Have you ever made a video on one of those?

If you use the first method shown, (my favorite) you will have to drop the hip rafter.

Yes, done that before, but would use the method in this video in the future.
